Posts: 2,696 | I'll be getting up early tommorow morning (about 07:30 ET), despite it being my day off, to take in the voting procedures of the International Olympic Commitee's decision on which city will host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. This always intrigues me. The five candidates that have made the IOC's shortlist and will appear on the ballot tommorow are London (ENG), Madrid (ESP), Moscow (RUS), New York (USA) and Paris (FRA). Read below for a link to where you can read each of their plans. ![]() Paris is unfortunately the 'front runner,' but I see it being a three horse race between London, New York and Paris. I don't expect Madrid or Moscow to make the second ballot. I personally would like to see London or New York City win the right to host the Games. NYC really has a unique plan, that could work really well, with having all the venues spread across the five burroughs in an 'X' pattern. London hasn't hosted the Summer Olympics since 1948, so it would be great for them to go back to the homeland. A few links for your reading pleasure: 117th IOC Session Live. It will either be London or Paris, and I'm willing to put my money on Paris. __________________ GO KNIGHTS GO! Last edited by go_leafs_go02 : 7-06-05 at 6:48 AM. Reason: am & pm mixed up |

Posts: 2,696 | I was up at about 6:00 am and tuned right in to find nothing had begun yet. The voting was supposed to get under way at 5:45 am. Anyways when they did get the button pushing underway, Moscow was knocked off first. Then quickly New York City was gone in round two. And Madrid got the boot in the third round. So it went to a final fourth round and as glg mentioned we do have a winner. We just have to wait until the bottom of the hour for Jacque Rogge's announcement. Hopefully the classless last minute comments by the frog contention in Singapore against the English is taken into consideration. A society like France's that is so rude to tourists and the rest of the world doesn't deserve to host the Olympics. Perhaps England made some allies along the way and the voters that supported the three cities already eliminated voted for London in the final round. We'll see. ![]() |

Man, I am totally surprised and shocked by that. I kept saying Paris, Paris, Paris, and then the IOC dude has the guts to say London. WOW! I couldn't care less, but seeing that London is an english language town it will be nicer to watch the opening ceremonies and stuff with a predominantly english language..instead of the foreign stuff like China will have.I still can't believe it. __________________ GO KNIGHTS GO! | |

Posts: 2,696 | ![]() England beats out Paris for 2012 Games TSN.ca Staff 7/6/2005 7:54:44 AM SINGAPORE - In an upset of Olympic proportions, the city of London, England beat out Paris, France for the right to stage the 2012 Summer Olympics. England was bidding to host the Games for the fourth time. They last played host to the Olympics in 1948. Birmingham (1992) and Manchester (1996 and 2000) previously bid but lost out on the Olympics. It was the third time in the last 20 years that Paris had bid to host the Summer Olympics. They previously lost in 1992 and 2008. Paris last played host to the Games in 1924. Moscow, which had been seen as the outsider in the five city race, was the first to be eliminated in balloting by the International Olympic Committee. They finished last in the first round of voting and were automatically eliminated. "We feel Moscow still needs the development and will build the sports facilities we plan to do," said Leonid Miroshnichenko, Secretary General of Russia's bid. "We lost today but it doesn't mean we lost the future, we will be bidding again." More: http://www.tsn.ca/olympics/news_story.asp?id=129726 |

I thought IOC rules stated that all the competitions had to be open to all competitors in the host nation? does this mean Blair will have to un-ban handguns for the mainland or will the pistol shooting contest be held in NI? ![]() |

Even though Paris was heavily favored to win the right to host the games, the French decided it would be better to surrender than face the possibility of losing. |

Posts: 2,696 | Bid team shocked by London bombings Associated Press 7/7/2005 10:15:18 AM SINGAPORE (AP) - Just hours after celebrating their victory for the 2012 Olympics, the London delegation expressed shock at the series of explosions that rocked the British capital Thursday. The International Olympic Committee said it remained confident the Games would be safe. "I'm totally distraught," said Keith Mills, chief executive of London's bid team. "I think it goes to demonstrate that no city in the world can escape terrorism these days. "Even London, that has probably the best and most sophisticated security services in the world finds it difficult to deal with these sorts of attacks." A U.S. law enforcement official said at least 40 people were killed and London hospitals reported more than 300 wounded in what Prime Minister Tony Blair called a series of "barbaric" terrorist attacks. The jubilant scenes in Trafalgar Square on Wednesday following the vote for the 2012 Summer Games contrasted with the looks of horror on the faces of casualties and witnesses after three blasts rocked the London subway and one tore open a packed double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday. Mills said the London contingent in Singapore was "completely and utterly devastated." "This is our town, our city, our home," Mills said. "We're praying for the people who have been affected." Mills said he planned to leave soon for London with Mayor Ken Livingstone and Sebastian Coe, leader of the team that won Wednesday's vote to host the 2012 Games. "This was not a terrorist attack against the mighty or the powerful, it is not aimed at presidents or prime ministers, it was aimed at ordinary working-class Londoners," Livingstone said before departing. "That isn't an ideology, it isn't even a perverted faith, it's mass murder. We know what the objective is. They seek to divide London." IOC president Jacques Rogge, who was informed of the attacks during the committee's annual general assembly, sent messages of condolence and support to British officials. "It wasn't an attack against the Games," Rogge told reporters. "Cities like London, Paris, New York all face these kind of risks, and remember what happened in Moscow and Madrid. There are no safe havens." IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies stressed the decision to award the Games to London was not in question. "From what we understand, this is not at all related to the Olympic Games," Davies said. "We have full confidence in the London authorities in securing the event." Coe issued a separate statement saying the bid team was "shocked and deeply saddened by today's tragic events in London." "Our thoughts are with the families of the bereaved and all those who have been injured in this despicable terrorist attack," he said. Jubilation in the British camp turned to distress within 24 hours of edging Paris 54-50 in the final round of voting by IOC members in Singapore. "It's terribly unfortunate in terms of timing," Mills said. "And clearly, our celebrations as a result of yesterday will have to be put on hold. Our thoughts go out to the families who've been effected. I hope that the security forces can get to the bottom of this quickly." British Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said celebrations planned to coincide with the return of the London 2012 delegation would be cancelled. She declined further comment. Blair spent two days in Singapore lobbying for the London bid before leaving Tuesday to host the G8 summit in Scotland. http://www.tsn.ca/olympics/news_story.asp?id=129821 Related Info |
