View Full Version : White Gone
White was traded for the 95th overall..
Salary dump, but how he`s worth less than Todd Fedoruk.. wow :coffee:

Who got him? That's a steal, IMO.
Colorado had the 95th pick no?
With the selection the Sens selected Missisauga Ice Dog center Cody Bass. I liked what I saw from him while following the OHL with the 67's. Very fast and has a motor that never quits, a great hitter and forechecker checker, good on the PK, amazing on face-offs, lots of character, assistant captain in Missisauga. But not much offensive upside. He plays like Mike Fisher but I doubt he becomes as good. I do fancy his odds to make the show, but in a limited role.
It is true this was an overpayment by Ottawa but our hands were tied. If we qualified White he'd simply take up way too much cap room for what he brought to the team, and for Ottawa to trade him it means they doubted he would be willing to sign here for less as a UFA. This way we don't lose him for nothing. Besides, I like that pick alot for it's place. Bass has actually represented Canada a few times, IIRC.

Good luck in Minny Todd and thanks for all the efforts you put in to the Sens organization.

So since hockey ended, Lalime, Bonk and White have been traded for 2 third rounders and a fourth rounder, while Todd Fedoruk went for a second rounder...
Has Muckler gone a little senile since his time in Edmonton? :stir:

Lalime: We were in a position of weakness. Everyone around the league knew he couldn't come back to Ottawa after that game 7 and that we were forced to trade him because of it. Our 4th round pick (98th overall) from St. Louis turned out to be Russian pivot Ilja Zubov, who some believe (I know ISS did off the top of my head) was Russia's best prospect in 2005. Although it was a weak year for the Russians, that's good value. I'm happy with the trade in hindsight. Lalime was also a pending UFA seeing as he wasn't given a qualifying offer (because he would've signed it), which is always harder to trade.
Bonk: Again in a position of weakness, but for different reasons. Bonk had to go because his contract was too high for his role and we need(ed) to re-sign some key guys. Seeing as most of the league views him as a third-line center, albeit a very good one, our 3rd round selection in return was alright. Espicially since it turned out to be Shawn Weller, a fast, gritty LW who made the USA WJC team at 18. A nice potential grinder down the line. Yes, Bonk fetched alot from LA in the Habs trade but Montreal just overpaid, plain and simple. They're using him on their 3rd line! And Muckler wouldn't trade Bonk to the Canadiens in the first place, being in the same division. Like Lalime, Bonk was also set to be a UFA and had no contract, making him harder to deal. More of a salary dump....
White: Explained earlier. I like that deal in hindsight too, given the prospect we got in return (Cody Bass).
I don't think it's so much that we got fleeced, although perhaps with White we could've got more (good think Bass was still around), it's just that Anaheim really overpaid for an enforcer.

So, who will replace White?
I liked the guy, and its too bad he is no longer a Senator, in his home town
Ottawa was knee deep in centers to begin with. With White gone, and Fisher being moved to LW, expect the following centers:
1. Spezza
2. Smolinski
3. Vermette
4. Kelly

Not much of an improvement over White if you ask me.

A down-grade infact, but Kelly is better suited to the 4th line IMO and Icomes at a fraction of the cost.
But Ottawa may have a problem down the middle if Spezza can't handle the #1 position. I'm confident he can however. Playmaking is his bread and butter, and Ottawa just so happens to be filled with top-line wingers on either side of him now that Havlat is on LW. Smoke is fine as a second-liner and Vermette can develop some more on line #3. I expect this lineup:
Havlat - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Smolinski - Hossa
Schaefer - Vermette - Varada
Langfeld - Kelly - Neil
If we can get Roberts.....
Roberts - Spezza - Alfredsson
Havlat - Smolinski - Hossa
Fisher - Vermette- Varada
Schaefer - Kelly - Neil

Just a matter of time before he starts donning a Leaf jersey I guess.

Well he's already written an Ed Belfour song.... :]

I take it that it's the kind of song that I'd hear on one of those Ottawa morning radio stations? Well good for him. I'm sure you're doing your part to encourage him. =] Well, your Sens will manage just fine without White... you let him know that. Probably no more major moves today for you guys - but good luck anyhow. I'll be closely listening to the radio to see what superstars and grit we'll be adding to our army. See you in battle.

 You're right. Thanks, Tucks. Oh well, addressing the role of 4th line LW'er can be easily done, and on the cheap, from either within' or via free agency. Maybe promote McGratton from Binghamton if we want an enforcer?
*Roberts to Florida, there goes our fantasy line-up. :(

How about Dave Scatchard?
He is a big, physical center. Have an off-season last year, but is basically a poor mans Peca
