Mine had to be Gordie Howe. Mr. Hockey could do no wrong even though he didn't play for my favourite team.

Tie between Terry O'Reilly and Bobby Orr

My father used to bring me to Boston Garden as a young kid in the 70's - I was a Bruins fan. :thumb:

Oddly enough, not only would Terry O'reilly climb into the stands to beat up fans of my current fave team (the Rangers)... but he's now an assisant coach for the Rangers!

as very young child ( 5-6) it was Barclay Plager, my house league team was called the Blues. Then it was Robert Gordon Orr.

I have memories of playing street hockey as a tyke, and every time some one scored they would yell out "SCORE.... BOBBY ORR"

Mine was a toss up between three Leafs.

Lanny MacDonald, Darrel Sittler, or Dave Keon. With Mike Palmateer neck and neck with Jaques Plante for goalies.

Exactly the same way for me. I liked Mats Sundin too when he didn't have a letter on his jersey, or when he had the A behind Gilmour. Always liked the old Schneider and Yushcavich(sp) pairing too, with Felix the cat in net. But my favourite defencemen when he was with the leafs(we traded Potvin for him I think IIRC) was actually Sylvain Cote. Don't ask me why.

Like a lot of Leaf fans from my generation, it was Doug Gilmour. Him and Wendel Clark were probably the two who most Leaf fans will remember and it stills makes my stomach sick to think back to his return to the team in the 2003 season and he got through one period before having his season ended. It would've been so nice to see him in the playoffs(or even one home game) but it just wasn't in the cards :(

When I was around 7 or 8 years old I mailed a letter to Davey Keon and he sent back an autographed pic. Too bad one of my little brothers drew a moustache and sideburns on him. I still have the letter and pic that Bobby Clarke mailed me. Thankfully that one didn't get into my little bro's hands!

My heros growing up: 1. Ken Dryden 2. Tony-O 3. Rogie Vachon

I guess I have the story wrong... I thought that he was advised by his family not to sign with a Canadian team because the dollar exchange rates were very unfavorable at the time.

So he was perfectly willing to sign with a Canadian team... just not quebec?

Oh boy, we were fans of the same players. There are also other players as well.

- Borje Salming
- the Stastny brothers (I was in my early teens I think when they played)
- Guy Lafleur

Growing up my dad brain washed me with Guy Lafleur videos, books, everything! And I just admired the way he played. It's a pitty I couldn't see him play live!

Other than he my heroes included :

Patrick Roy (early-mid 90's)
Mike Keane
Damphousse(this was a phase I went through at one point)
Recchi (as a hab)

and currently its Koivu with Souray,Begin close seconds.

Sure I mite seem bias with all my picks being habs but thats how I grew up: A HABS FAN . Forever Proud!

Ken Dryden was my favourite, followed closely by Guy Lafleur.

No idea Matt.

I was far too young to care, I didn't even know he was ever traded until around 98 :].

Actually imho the main reason why Lindros did not want to play in Quebec because frankly they were the laughing stock of the NHL, he wanted to go to a contender.

But what he didn't count on was the fact that the Flyers ripped the heart out of the team to get him.

Actually in retrospect... the Rangers were not giving up their heart for Eric in the non-trade.

IIRC - two of the pieces were Amonte and Weight who didn't last long as Rags anyway. Another guy was Kovalev who's potential was unknown at the time, but as some of you know I have no use for him. Beezer might have been in the deal but that didn't matter because he was in the process of losing his job to Mike Richter.

plus a few draft picks? bah - The Rangers tip cab drivers with draft picks

If it wasn't for Lindros the Avs wouldn't have won those Cups - you should be thanking him  . Also...too, too bad for Doug's Flyers :razz2: . The last paragraph sums it up well...

Oh what could have been for the mighty Philadelphia Flyers.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the organization was always one of the most respected and feared teams in the National Hockey League. Even in the lean years, the Flyers were always considered a threat, with a strong defensive core, a competent offence and a fearsome goaltender.

Even with their strength, however, the Flyers did not have much playoff success. While they did reach the Stanley Cup Finals and were often in the semis, there was something missing in the team?s arsenal that would take them over the top. What it seemed like they needed was the type of player who would be a leader on and off the ice; the type of player who?d fit into the mould of the Broadstreet Bully; that one player who had the ?it? factor.

Enter Eric Lindros.

At the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, the Quebec Nordiques chose Lindros number one overall. Knowing that ?The Next One? would never play for the Nords (he illustrated that by never even putting on the jersey), the team knew they had a player who they?d be able to trade and get a very decent return on-investment for.

Who knew that they?d get so much?

Almost a year after the draft and an arbitrator ruling following a controversy that included the New York Rangers, Lindros was on his way to the city of brotherly love. On their way to Quebec, however, was a bevy of talent and potential. In exchange for Lindros, the Nordiques received Peter Forsberg, Steve Duschene, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Philly?s first-round pick in 1993 and 1994, and $15 million in cash, just to make sure the deal was even.

Now immediately, one would think that a Lindros-Forsberg deal is pretty decent. After all, Forsberg, who had been selected fifth overall in the same Draft, was touted as being the best player outside of North America, while Lindros was the top prospect on either side of the 49th parallel. That deal alone would have been okay, but the extra players sealed the fate of the Flyers.

Let?s take this step-by-step:

Quebec took Jocylen Thibault with Philly?s 1993 pick. Thibault, you may recall, was the major piece in the Colorado Avalanche deal that brought in Patrick Roy. That one move, in the eyes of many fans, gave the Avs the Stanley Cup in 1996.

Steve Duschene?s trade trail is a bit more complicated, bust just as noteworthy. First, he was traded with Denis Chasse to St. Louis for three players, the most important being Garth Butcher. Why Butcher you ask? Well, Butcher was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Wendel Clark. Clarkie was later traded to the Islanders for Claude Lemieux, who you may remember as being one of the cogs in the 1996 Cup win.

Also part of the initial Duschene deal was Ron Sutter, who would be dealt for Uwe Krupp, who scored the Cup-winning goal for the 1996 Avalanche. The third player was Bob Bassen, who was signed away by Dallas in 1995, one year prior to the 1996 Cup win.

Mike Ricci was also a big part of the 1996 Cup win. His tenure with the Avs, however, did not last much past that victory, as he would soon be traded to San Jose for their first-round pick in 1998. You may have heard of the guy they selected ? Alex Tanguay.

Ron Hextall was traded, along with a first round pick in 1993 (which ended up being Todd Bertuzzi), to the New York Islanders for Mark Fitzpatrick and their first-round pick (Adam Deadmarsh). While Fitzpatrick would end up on the Panthers via the expansion draft, Deadmarsh would win a Cup in 1996, but more importantly would be later traded to Los Angeles for Rob Blake.

Hextall, meanwhile, would end up back in the Flyers organization a couple years after the first trade, as would Kerry Huffman, after a trade from Ottawa (he was a waiver claim from Quebec).

Chris Simon was traded to the Capitals with Curtis Leshchychyn for Keith Jones and Washington?s first and fourth-round picks in 1998. Those two picks would get Stanley Cup rings in 2001 with the Avs ? Shjon Podein and Scott Parker.

And just to round it out, the 1994 pick ended up in Washington after a couple trades. Yes, had the fates worked out a different way, Nolan Baumgartner could have had a Cup ring as well.

So looking down the line, Quebec received Forsberg, Roy, Tanguay, Blake and other key players for Lindros. The Flyers, for their part, got a 1995 Hart Trophy win from Lindros and a trip to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals, where they were beat by Detroit. They also got their own fair share of headaches from ?Big E? (pun not intended), and ended up trading Lindros to the New York Rangers, the team who was ready to deal with Quebec in the first place.

So had the Flyers let Lindros go to Broadway initially, they would have had quite the team. There?s a lesson to be learned here somewhere, but for now we?ll leave this trade as one of the most memorable moments in hockey; whether it?s good or bad, however, depends on where you live.

Mario Lemieux was my first favourite player way back in the mid-late 80s. And then I became a Flames fan and loved Al MacInnis, Jim Peplinski, Nieuwendyk, Makarov, Roberts, Fleury, etc.

And Sakic and Yzerman.
