Report: Canucks after 2nd overall pick

The Vancouver Canucks are frantically trying to get their hands on the second-overall pick in tomorrow's draft, TFP has learned. Multiple sources have told TFP that the Canucks are extremely interested in drafting Gilbert Brule, who played with the WHL's Vancouver Giants.

The Canucks are supposedly offering the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim a package that includes the 10th overall selection and possibly defenseman Mathias Ohlund. Fedor Fedorov, the younger brother of the Ducks' Sergei, is also apparently involved.

Meanwhile, the Canucks are also very interested in going after defenseman Scott Niedermayer once the free-agent market opens August 1. If a deal involved Ohlund is complete, the Canucks are expected to make a strong pitch for Niedermayer's services at the annual rate of $7.8 million he is looking for.

I can't see Burke taking Fedor Federov off Nonis' hands. Ohlund has been my favourite d man, although Jovo gets more ink. I think Jovo is a better trade bait, although I am sure Burke would love to have Matty. If the Cancuks traded up 2nd would be a little too high to take Brule, but as a North Van boy he would have great marketing potential in the Lower Mainland.

A number 1 defenseman and the 10th overall pick to draft a guy 3 spots early who, while having a high upside has a huge downside as well... could quite possibly be the worst trade in the 'Nucks history, including Neely.

If Nonis does this deal, kick him out of town. Ohlund is our best defenseman, and shouldn't be included in any such deals

Plus, I have read before, that Brule isn't fond of playing here, due to the pressure.

Nonis apparently said on MOJO that he liked the 2nd overall pick, but he also liked his first born son... :laughing:
