What do you guys think about this?
Thrashers cut McEachern loose

The Thrashers will have a new captain for the fifth time in six seasons after declining to pick up the option on winger Shawn McEachern, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. While it is possible that McEachern, now an unrestricted free agent, could re-sign with the team, it remains doubtful.
"We just thought, Shawn, obviously, the last year we played, he played very well for us," Thrashers GM Don Waddell told the paper. "Every time, with a player getting a year older and you sit out a year, these older guys are going to be much higher risk and for the money we were going to pay Shawn, I felt, and we felt as a staff, we should look at potential [unrestricted free agents] out there.
"We should be able to get someone who is much younger, five, six, seven years, who can hopefully fit the bill of goods." Asked if he were surprised, McEachern said, "No, I read it in the paper this morning."
"It will be kind of a wait and see thing and we'll see what's going on," he said. "I think there will be teams that might be interested."
Waddell and McEachern each left the door open to a possible return, albeit not at the $1.52 million that McEachern would have earned had Waddell picked up the option. Waddell also declined the options on forwards Tommi Santala and Francis Lessard - but only because those options called for NHL-only contracts.
1.52 Mill, natural LW, has played with most of the guys here already...simply as a depth move? Thoughts?
