Report: Devils offers to keep Elias
TSN.ca Staff

With Scott Niedermayer's future in New Jersey in doubt, general manger Lou Lamoriello is taking steps to lockup his offense. According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Devils gave qualifying offers to forwards Patrik Elias ($4.18 million), Scott Gomez ($2.2 million) and Jeff Friesen ($2.28 million).

Elias, who is still recovering from hepatitis A which he contracted during the lockout when playing in Russia, doesn't think he will be ready for opening night. "With my health issue, Lou could've waited," Elias told the Star-Ledger. "Lou didn't have to do that at all. I appreciate it."

It would appear that Gomez and Friesen will sign the offers.

"Scott will play one year, no problem at all," his father, Carlos, who handles his son's contract told the Star-Ledger. "The second year will determine whether Lou wants Scott back or not. In two years he's unrestricted, so we'll see."

"I didn't know one way or the other," Friesen told the paper. "You don't know where you are in the pecking order. Obviously I'm excited to get it and be back. We like it in New Jersey a lot."

The first two offers don't surprise me, but the offer to Friesen does. I don't know if he's worth that much, but then again I've never liked the whole Sykora/Friesen trade...
