View Full Version : Pouliot, Jacques and Bodie; Greene to Turn Pro; Trade Imminent?
http://www.edmontonsun.com/Sports/Tuesday/2005/07/26/1147929-sun.html
Agents for 2003 draft picks Marc-Antoine Pouliot, J.F. Jacques and Troy Bodie submitted counter-proposals yesterday in response to the Oilers' initial contract offers on the weekend.
"We're just looking over those and we'll respond accordingly,'' said assistant GM Scott Howson.
All 2003 picks have to be signed by Thursday or they re-enter the 2005 draft on Saturday.
But unlike previous years when negotiations went right down to the wire (or in 2002 when they couldn't agree to terms with Matthew Lombardi and he went back in the draft, and was selected by Calgary), losing any member of this trio is highly unlikely.
If they go back in the draft they come out under the new collective bargaining agreement system that maxes their salary at $850,000 and their signing bonus at $255,000.
Under the hybrid system that affects Pouliot, Jacques and Bodie, they could earn up to $942,000 (the old rookie cap less a 24% rollback) and a signing bonus of up to $850,000.
MORE WIGGLE ROOM
Not that they'd get those numbers, but there's a lot more wiggle room now than there would be Sunday morning.
FREE AT LAST: When open season on free agents begins Aug. 1, nobody knows for sure how the first few hours, or even the first few days, are going to play out. It could be a wild free-for-all like bargain-hunters elbowing for position at a Boxing Day sale, or it could be dead silence as general managers micro-analyse cap space and unrestricted free agents try and grasp this newer, cheaper market. "That's the million-dollar question,'' said GM Kevin Lowe.
"You don't really know if it's going to be like past years, where it turns into a frenzy. Right now we don't really know how many players are available, or how many teams are looking for what. I guess we'll have a better sense of that once the buyouts are done.''
Rather than rest Edmonton's 2005-06 fortunes on such an unpredictable environment, Lowe would probably be better off filling his wish list, for a puck moving defenceman and big centre, via trades before Aug. 1.
That way he wouldn't be at the mercy of a free agent free-for-all that could very well leave him empty-handed.
"I sure hope that teams don't go crazy on Aug. 1,'' he said. "I hope they show some patience, because that will impact the market.''
WELCOME MATT: Matt Greene, the six-foot-three, 225-pound defenceman selected in the second round in 2002, will probably forgo his final year of college eligibility and turn pro for this season.
SECOND THOUGHTS
He and his agent will evaluate the marketplace and decide from there, but they said midway through last season that he was having second thoughts about staying in college, and when long-time North Dakota coach Dean Blais left to become an assistant with the Columbus Blue Jackets it probably cinched his decision.
He's the Oilers' best defenceman not currently in the NHL.
Good news on the prospect front, however Greene could very possibly challenge for an NHL spot, and we have every reason to belive another defenseman will be added.
Brewer
Smith
UFA
Semenov
Staios
Bergeron
Greene
Is it just me, or is a deal of one of Brewer/Smith for a #1 C all but a done deal?
Is it just me, or is a deal of one of Brewer/Smith for a #1 C all but a done deal?
Just out of curiousity, which #1 center would they go after?
EDIT: By the way, you'll be getting a solid defenseman in Greene on the blueline, I've watched him the last few years with the Sioux. He's one strong, tough player.
I love watching Matt Greene play, and can't wait for 2 years down the road in the Battle of Alberta.. because him and Phaneuf will headline what should be a nasty rivalry. Several scouts in the league have said that Greene is meaner than Phaneuf and has the same defensive ability. Obviously he'll never get 40 points like Phaneuf will have the ability too, however Adam Foote is still a helluva defenseman ;).
I have a gut feeling Lowe will target Handzus... depending on the return and who we send it could be a strong deal.
For instance, if he were to deal Brewer for Philly's first and Handzus, then we suddenly have 2 first round picks, and a very high second round pick this draft, and a wash in salary that allows us to still go after a great winger and a defenseman to replace Brewer. For instance Palffy and Foote.
Assets lost: Brewer
Assets gained: Foote, Palffy, Handzus, First Round Pick
Well.. I can live with that ;)

Could you provide us to the link where you've heard these scout's opinions?

Yes John, unlike some people who'll remain nameless I won't simply say something because I heard about it at Lunch, nor will I over-rate every single prospect my team has. Fact is, many scouts believe that Greene is very comparable to Adam Foote, and is an absolute monster. I actually challenge you to find a negative report on him, because I've read several and they've all been glowing.

?I think Phaneuf?s offensive ability makes him a better player, but I know if I were playing, I?d rather battle Phaneuf in front of the net than Matt Greene,? declared one scout. ?I think I could handle Phaneuf but Greene would end up crosschecking the back of my head off!?
From McKeen's..
Matt Greene, D (Edm)
A monster in one simple word .. a mobile, hulking presence who plays a solid, rock-em-sock-em physical game .. loves to step up and hammer puckcarriers with big open-ice blasts, and is equally as militant along the boards and in the crease .. did, however, completely miss on one occasion, allowing Mike Hamilton to slip by the hit and get a partial breakaway .. very aggressive, and intimidates opponents with his strength and nastiness .. skates well both forwards and backwards .. more a defensive mindset, but handles the puck well enough and makes safe outlet plays .. must continue to refine his puckhandling and overall finesse skills .. now wears the ?C? and looks much more confident from his sophomore year .. showed improved defensive poise and positioning, learning how to contain the rush .. played mop-up for partner Matt Smaby a few times, exhibiting an ability to elevate his level of desperation as the danger increased .. will support the rush from time to time, but takes care of his own end first .. strong defensive instincts .. a tidy, very impressive performance from the junior blueliner who appeared to be the most NHL-ready player on either side.
That's a scouting station raving about him and a scout saying he's not as good offensively as Dion, but has the same defensive prowess. Don't forget that Dion is one of the most over-rated prospects in the world either ;)

Well done, still waiting for that "Crosby wants to play with Edmonton" link though.

I said he wants to play with Pouliot, amazing that's so hard to believe
Since you insist to be annoying about it however, here you go.. it`s in one of these, happy reading.

There`s a qutoe in there, like I said, happy reading. I`m sure if he`d have said the same about the Laff`s we`d have never heard the end of it.
To get back on topic, today the three sent their counter-offers in to the Oilers.

No need to get your panties tied in a knot. You're wound so tight lately, jeesh. Get a flask of JD's, and relax.
Here's what you said.
#3 Crosby stated he'd love to play in Edmonton - specifically because he could then continue to play with MA Pouliot.
In any of your submitted articles Crosby never said that he'd love to play in Edmonton. In fact, the author didn't even say it. In one instance though he was asked if he'd play in Edmonton if he was drafted there, he said he would(just like he would for any team), his reasoning behind it(this isn't a quote from Crosby either, its from hearsay from the Oilers head scout Prendergast) was that Gretzky played there and yes, Pouliot is a prospect.
This is comparable to how leaf fans get critisized for when we say a player wants to play in Toronto, such as the Niedermayer thing. We get shot down yet leafhaters, like you, do the exact same thing for your team of preference.
The reason I was being "annoying" about it was to point out that yet again you bashing of the leafs is completely blind. Just like that Tannenbaum quote you cut out of a posted article.
Anyways, carry on with the intended topic of this thread.
I said love instead of like, clearly the hyperbole police should be called.
I'm going to say right now that one of Staios or Brewer won't be an Oiler come October. Matt Greene is a servicable 7th who'll get some conditioning in the AHL, and assuming Lowe signs a "puck mover" that gives us our top 4 (Brewer/Staios, Semenov, Smith, UFA) and we have several servicable guys for the bottom pairing, Bergeron, Greene, Lynch, Woywitka, and possibly Cross.

Actually, he never really said he'd like to play in Edmonton either. He just said that if that was the hand he was dealt, he'd go. I'm busting your balls Brian.
If I were Edmonton, I'd go to the FA market to get that coveted #1 center. I wouldn't go and trade Brewer for it because that only leaves a hole in the defence. If I were going to trade Brewer, I'd trade him for another offensive minded defencemen. Believe me, a guy who can be slick as gel coming up through center ice as a defencemen could do wonders for the Oilers, because once they get it in deep they are hard to contain. IMO, the Oilers don't have enough mobile defencemen. You could trade Smith instead of Brewer, but you won't get the same return. Smith means too much to the team anyway, leadership wise, IMO.
So lets see, lets just say for sh!ts and giggles the Oilers sign Jason Allison(even though he's going to Toronto... ). Then Lowe trades Eric Brewer for Sergei Gonchar(just hypothetical, it's possible that there are other options and other things that would be in the deal, this won't happen straight up). I think with Smith on the side of Gonchar on defence, with Allison alongside Smyth and maybe Hemsky on the top line, thats a dangerous line right there.
Then on the second line you have Dvorak, York and Torres. Thats 2 lines that can put the puck in the net. You're top defensive pairing has the offensive guy and the stay at home guy. The rest of the defence isn't bad. I think that if Allison stays healthy in this scenario, the Oilists may finish in the top 5 of their conference, if all goes well. That could be a big if. Hemsky has to work out as does Torres.

Agree with everything you said - I only think Brewer is replacable if we sign a very solid UFA, which there aren't many of.
The only thing you said that I don't fully agree with is that Torres has to work out.. if he faulters, move York to the wing and have York - Horcoff - Dvorak. Horcoff on the third line is a bit of a waste, but he'll absolutey eat up the compeition.

To get back on topic, today the three sent their counter-offers in to the Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with forwards Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Jean-Francois Jacques and Troy Bodie, all to three-year entry level contracts.
Pouliot, the Oilers? first round draft pick (22nd overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, captained the Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) to a berth in the 2005 Memorial Cup. The 6?2?, 190-pound Quebec City, Quebec native recorded 114 points (45-69-114) in 70 games with the Oceanic last season.
Jacques, a 6?4?, 217-pound left-winger was drafted by the Oilers in the second round (68th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old captained the Baie Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL) for the third consecutive season in 2004-05 and notched 78 points (36-42-78 ) in 69 games. Following the 2005 QMJHL playoffs, the Terrebonne, Quebec native was signed by the AHL?s Edmonton Road Runners and finished the regular season with the Oilers? AHL affiliate.
Bodie, who was drafted by the Oilers in the ninth round (278th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, had a breakthrough season with the WHL?s Kelowna Rockets last season, notching 24 goals and 48 points in 72 games. The 6?5?, 205-pound native of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba helped Kelowna earn their second consecutive Memorial Cup berth in 2005.
The signings have started.
Awesome.
Next on the bill, Matt Greene.
