The Ottawa Senators will renew the option on goaltender Dominik Hasek's contract to retain his services for the upcoming NHL season.
Senators GM John Muckler only had one option.

With an NHL draft -- being held in Ottawa no less -- 10 restricted free agents and a salary cap to worry about, ensuring the Senators have a No. 1 goalie in place was a top priority for Muckler.

So following the Senators' press conference yesterday to announce plans for the upcoming season, Muckler planned to renew the $2.28-million (all terms US) option on 40-year-old goaltender Dominik Hasek.

Worst case scenario he stinks it up worse than Lalime, and I don't think Lalime looked too good behind that impressive group last year. :conspire: I'm optomistic, but if Hasek flops we're pretty thin in the crease with a rookie and an above-average backup being the only other options from within'. Meanwhile, it looks like Prusek is on his way out from that article.

Backup goalie Martin Prusek, who is scheduled to make $710,600, also needs a qualifying offer. It's expected he'll get one, but he will likely be dealt so Ottawa can promote Ray Emery from Binghamton.

Sources say the Canadiens are looking for a backup and are interested in Prusek because Cristobal Huet -- acquired from the Kings last summer -- is out until January with torn ligaments in his knee.

"I would think Ray Emery is going to get a chance to push for the No. 1 job in training camp. Dominik Hasek is going to be the No. 1, but Emery is probably going to get as much of a chance to play in the exhibition season as Hasek," said Muckler.

Maybe our 19th, Prusek + ???? to Montreal for the 5th overall pick?

Senators exercise Hasek's option

OTTAWA (CP) - As expected, the Ottawa Senators are hanging on to Dominik Hasek.

General manager John Muckler announced Wednesday that the NHL team has exercised its one-year option on the 40-year-old goaltender. Hasek is due to make $2.28 million US this season.

Hasek did not play during the lockout, other than skating with the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa's AHL farm team, during training camp.

Ottawa signed the six-time Vezina Trophy winner in July 2004.

In 595 career NHL games between Chicago, Buffalo and Detroit, the six-time NHL all-star has recorded a 296-192-82 career record, 63 shutouts, 2.23 GAA and 0.92 save percentage. The Czech native ranks first among active and all-time NHL goaltenders in save percentage (92.4), third among active goalies (14th all-time) in shutouts (63), and sixth among current netminders (8th all-time) in goals-against-average (2.23).

In 2003, Hasek came out of a one-year retirement to rejoin the Detroit Red Wings but was limited to 14 games due to a recurring groin injury.

I'm pretty sure it's something like $1.7 million now, as that was the compensation he was due pre- 24% roll-back.

He has a good defence in front of him, but Lalime found a way to screw it up too. You have to wonder if Hasek still has it seeing that he's played 14 games in the last 3 years. A huge risk IMO. Even if he turns out to be ok between the pipes, there's a good probability that he'll get injured anyway just like our alcoholic Eddie in Toronto. This year may be Prusek's/Emery's time to shine, if Hasek is a bust. Ottawa is paying a low price for his services though, so it's worth the risk financially.

I doubt Dom will play any more than 55 games, with Emery playing the rest. Prusek will be dealt....my sock puppet told me.

Even better than my original estimates of 1.7m, Hasek's salary will indeed be $1.52 million, as confirmed by the NHLPA website. :thumb:

Yes, but that press conference was held prior to the new-CBA. Infact, it was held even prior to the NHLPA even putting a 24% roll-back onto the table. I expect the media outlets will edit their articles in time to show the correct figures.

More Hasek news. Again, his salary has been confirmed at $1.52 million so that makes the risk more affordable.

Hasek on a mission
Sens confident in 40-year-old

(CP) - Ottawa Senators GM John Muckler liked what he heard from Dominik Hasek when the two talked recently.

"I could hear that passion in his voice," Muckler said during a conference call Wednesday. "He's on a mission and he wants to prove that he cam become an elite player again. "That excites me." It excited Muckler enough to exercise the Sens' one-year, $1.52-million US option on the 40-year-old goaltender.

Hasek signed with Ottawa in July 2004 to a one-year deal plus an option. The lockout wiped out that first year. Hasek did not play during the lockout, other than skating with the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa's AHL farm team, during training camp.

The Sens signed Hasek after trading Patrick Lalime to the St. Louis Blues for a fourth-round draft pick.

Optimism aside, Muckler acknowledged the decision to go with a 40-year-old in goal will come under close scrutiny.

"This is going to be a controversy all year long," he said. "Every game that he doesn't play well in, everybody's going to say, 'Well it's the age and so on, down the line.'

"I'm willing to live with that, Dominik's willing to live with that pressure, and I think he'll do the job for us."

Of course, Hasek isn't the only NHL goalie long in the tooth. The Leafs' Ed Belfour is also 40, while Sean Burke, most recently with Philadelphia, is 38. Arturs Irbe, whose last NHL stop was Carolina, is also 38.

More on DomiNickel....

Dom to cost only $1.52M

If Dominik Hasek can recapture his Stanley Cup-winning form, the Senators have themselves a heck of a bargain.

The Senators, as reported by the Sun on Tuesday, have officially picked up the option on Hasek's contract, but at the bargain-basement price of $1.52 million (all terms US) not the initially reported $2.28 million.

League sources confirmed last night that Hasek's deal would have been worth $2.28 million this year if there had been hockey in 2003-04, but with the NHL lockout wiping out the season, the option fell to $1.52 million.

$3.5M IN BONUSES

This doesn't mean Hasek can't hit the jackpot.

If he leads Ottawa to a Stanley Cup title, Hasek will earn $3.5 million in bonuses.

The good news is, because the contract was signed prior to the lockout, the bonus money would not count against the Senators' $39-million salary cap.

So for a guy who said he would retire if the NHL hadn't settled its dispute with the NHL Players' Association by this fall, the 40-year-old goalie could be in for a lucrative 2005-06 season.

And Hasek, who hasn't played a meaningful game in nearly two years, says he'll be ready for the start of training camp on Sept. 13.

"I know the first two weeks of training camp are going to be my nightmare. I'm not going to say I'm going to be crying, but it's going to be tough and once I get through that I'm going to be fine," Hasek said in a conference call from the Czech Republic with reporters.

"But I feel great. I'm still at the same weight I was at when I won the Stanley Cup with Detroit (in 2002). I've been doing something every day and I'm planning to go back on the ice on Aug. 15 so that I'm ready for action."

Hasek has played only 14 games in the last three years, but Senators GM John Muckler isn't worried.

"I spoke to Dominik for about an hour (Tuesday) and I really felt good when I hung up from that conversation because I could hear the passion back in his voice and that made me really excited," said Muckler.

"I know this decision (to bring Hasek back) is going to be a controversy all year, but I know Dominik Hasek and I feel strongly that he'll be able to get the job done. You don't worry about a guy losing his physical skills ... you worry about him losing his passion. I don't believe that's the case with Dominik Hasek at all. He wants to be at the top of his game and I think he will get it done."

PERSONAL TRAINER

Hasek, who had surgery to repair his groin last spring, said he has been working with a personal trainer and will be back on the ice in mid-August. He plans to arrive in Ottawa 10 days before camp.

"This is a completely different situation than last year because I know what I'm getting ready for and when I'm going to play," said Hasek.

He said it will be up to coach Bryan Murray to decide how much Hasek is going to play.

"I can't say whether I'm going to play 55 or 70 games because that's not up to me and I haven't played for a while," said Hasek. "I can tell you when I've played my best hockey, I've played about 65 games a year. I just want to make sure that I'm at the top of my game and I feel great. I feel like I can get there."
