Trouble in Ranger-land
TheFourthPeriod.com
According to the New York Post, the Rangers have not paid Bobby Holik and Darius Kasparaitis the July 1 signing bonuses they were due under terms of the contracts they signed as free agents in 2002. The NHLPA has filed a grievance with the NHL on behalf of each player.
When Holik signed his five-year, $45 million contract, an annual bonus of $2 million was agreed to and stated to be paid each July 1 through 2006. Kasparaitis's original six-year, $25.3M agreement mandated an annual $1 million bonus payment due July 1 through 2007.
Neither contract contains language negating the club's obligation to pay the signing bonus in event of a lockout or canceled season.
The Post suggests it's quite possible the Rangers are going to attempt to deduct the sum of the bonus payments remaining on each contract ($4M for Holik, $3M for Kasparaitis, including this year) by the two-thirds compliance buyouts clubs can exercise.
Holik, with two-years at $13.452M remaining on his deal, is owed $8.959M on a buyout. Kasparaitis, with three-years at $9.728M remaining, is owed a buyout of $6.479M.
Hey Smelly, is this really an issue in NYR?
