Keenan will bust out the wallet

With so many top unrestricted free agents available, Panthers GM Mike Keenan can be seen drooling from miles away. Forwards from Markus Naslund to Peter Forsberg to Alexei Kovalev to Pavol Demitra and defensemen from Scott Niedermayer to Brian Leetch to Adam Foote, to name a few, are all available.
"It's going to be like studying for your finals," Keenan told the South-Florida Sun-Sentinel. "There's going to be all-nighters, lots of coffee and short sleeps."
According to the paper, the Panthers have so few players under contract, Keenan's been handed a hefty wallet by owner Alan Cohen.
Keenan's never been against spending cash, and there's no better time to be a buyer. Keenan has about $21 million to $25 million to work with to get to a respectable $30 million payroll.
Cohen has made no secret he's given the go-ahead to Keenan to bring in not just quality players these next several weeks, but potential difference-makers.
"Our goal is to be a playoff-caliber team this year," Cohen told the paper. "We should have many players wanting to play here. We have a list. We'll see how it plays out."
