Niedermayer wants top dollar
TheFourthPeriod.com

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello was on the phone bright and early on the first day he could try to sign unrestricted free agent Scott Niedermayer, reports the New York Post. If Lamoriello expected to re-sign the reining Norris Trophy winner, though, he better be willing to pay up.

Niedermayer's Agent Kevin Epp expects to receive some offer for the salary maximum of $7.8 million, and figures Niedermayer won't be inclined to play in New Jersey at much of a discount.

"I don't think a discount is what Scott is looking for," Epp told the Post. Niedermayer earned $4 million in 2003-04 and was awarded $7 million for the 2004-05 season through arbitration, which was wiped out. Epp says it's unlikely that Niedermayer will sign with New Jersey before the Devils' week of exclusive negotiation is over.

"The whole process of last season and going to arbitration was to see what's out there," Epp said.

At 7.8, I doubt the usual suspects (TO, Det, Phi, Col) has any chance at signing Scott and staying within the cap, especially Toronto.

He can go somewhere else other then Toronto if he wants that much. We just can't afford him under those circumstances. Niedermayer said he wouldn't mind moving his family here, but if he's expecting the maximum, it won't work out here.

Other than Toronto? At the max Niedermayer is gonna have to find some bottom feeder with ample cap space. Detroit certainly won't sign him with Lidstrom making the max. Colorado has Blake as a close to max player. Toronto has too many holes to fill to give one guy the max. New York is apparently serious about building with youth (we'll see how that goes once free agency starts tho). Vancouver's first priorty is probably resigning Naslund, who'll make a fair bit of coin himself. Philly might be able to pay up, but I they're too smart to give a max contract to anybody. Niedermayer is gonna have to come down a lot if he wants to get signed IMO.

Pittsburgh is going to need a puck moving / skating defenseman now, Lord knows they have ample cap space....my $$$ is we'll be hearing "Niedermayer to Crosby to Lemieux....oh what a goal!'

Niedermayer signs with Pittsburgh, you heard it here first.

He is too pricey for Vancouver, so you can forget about it

I predict he signs with a west coast team. One of the below 3

-Anaheim
-Los Angeles
-Phoenix

How about San Jose? They must have ample room under the cap with no big stars under contract.

Marleau and Nabakov command quite a bit of cash combined, and Stuart/Hannan don't come cheaply either.

San Jose has no use for a defenseman, they need a scoring winger.

Lowe will make an offer to Niedermayer, if it's enough is of course another story.

The thing about San Jose is that they already have pretty good depth on the blueline, plus I think they're going to need the cap space in the next couple of years with Nabokov, Marleau, Stuart, and Cheechoo (to name a few) probably making some decent money.

Los Angeles would probably be a good fit for Niedermayer, if they were willing to give him the right amount. I think Niedermayer is kidding himself if he thinks anybody is going to sign him for $7.8 million, especially the Devils, who already have contracts to worry about (Stevens, Rafalski, Elias) and guys making some decent money already (Brodeur, Madden).

To be honest, losing Niedermayer may not be all that bad for the Devils. It would allow them to pay for Stevens (I think he'll be back), Rafalski, and Elias, and maybe a decent free agent or two, depending on how those three contracts end up.

Victory is mine!

Maybe the Devils should sign Khabibulan with the money they'd free up by not having Nieds? They'd be a real contender with a goalie like that

Nah, we'll just trade Brodeur for Cloutier, because the team's defense can make any goaltender look like an All-Star.:D

Maybe Mike will sign Neidermeyer?

Milbury said he will keep Yashin at 7 million along with Peca at 4 million. If Milbury signs Neidermeyer, he'll have spent 18 million dollars on 3 players: One great player (Neidermeyer); one extremely good player (Peca); and one complete bum and utter waste of talent (Yashin), leaving approximately 18 million or so to use on the other 20 players on his team.
Yeah, I could see this happening....Milbury is that stupid 8)

Scott Niedermayer: Penguins in Mix

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Wednesday, July 27, 2005
Update: Niedermayer and his agent Kevin Epp have discussed the possibility of playing for Pittsburgh. Niedermayer becomes an unrestricted free agent August 1, and the Penguins are in an excellent financial position to sign top talent, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Recommendation: "Me and Scott have talked about Pittsburgh because they have a lot of (salary cap) room and because of Mario Lemieux," said Epp. "He thought Pittsburgh might have some interest. Pittsburgh has some things to offer with good talent and players and room in the cap to bring in a player of his stature." Lemieux and Niedermayer won the gold medal together playing for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics and again in the 2004 World Cup. They'll see each other again for an orientation camp in August for the 2006 Winter Games.

The Flames seem to be in the mix as well...

Niedermayer looks west
Canucks, Flames in running for defenceman

July 27, 2005

The Calgary Flames might be knocking the Vancouver Canucks out of contention again.
This time it could be the race for Scott Niedermayer.

http://a123.g.akamai.net/f/123/12465/1d/www.canada.com/images/s.gifAn NHL scout said Tuesday that one of the hot rumours making the rounds is that Flames star Jarome Iginla is heavily recruiting Niedermayer, the free agent defenceman who has been key to the New Jersey Devils' run of success the last decade.

Niedermayer, the 2004 Norris Trophy winner, has said publicly that he's keen on playing closer to his Cranbrook home. Either Vancouver or Calgary would fill that bill.

Niedermayer and Iginla are both graduates of the Kamloops Blazers and would know each other from assorted all-star games and Canadian national teams, too.

"He's definitely interested in playing out west," said Niedermayer's Vancouver-based agent Kevin Epp. "It has to make sense, though."

Epp said there are teams that Niedermayer would play on for a "discounted rate." He stopped short of naming them.

He did say that the Devils, the club he's played with since 1991-92, isn't in that group.

Of course, that could just be a negotiation tactic. Epp admitted that he's talked a "number of times" to the Devils.

Niedermayer made $4 million in 2003-04 and was to get $7 million for the season that was lost to the lockout after going to arbitration in the summer.

"There are places that he would go at a discount," said Epp. "We are going to see and hear what's available."

Niedermayer's brother Rob, a forward, played with the Flames for nearly two seasons prior to getting dealt to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks at the 2002-03 trade deadline.

While he didn't have have much success, with just 14 goals in 111 games, he has been quoted as saying that he enjoyed his time there, in particular when he played under current Calgary coach Darryl Sutter.

Teams can start signing other club's free agents on Monday. Epp said Niedermayer, "doesn't want things to drag out," and figured that he could have a deal in place for his agent by Aug. 5.
