Any one else surprised and some-what dissapointed with only the one buy-out so far (Leclair & Amonte Bought-out (http://www.hockeystation.com/showthread.php?t=857))???

Where's the moves? Where's the signings? Where's the buy-outs etc.?

If you don't mind Ferret... I am going to stick this and make it an official list of who gets bought out this week - Mel :)

Tony Amonte - PHI
John Leclare - PHI
Brian Savage - PHO
Derian Hatcher - DET
Darren McCarty - DET
Ray Whitney - DET
Pierre Turgeon - DAL (pending waiver clear)
Bobby Holik - NYR
(PS, I've heard rumblings that the Rags originally got Holik at any cost to stick it to the Devils. That's why the Rangers wound up signing him only after ALL other teams, including the Leafs, threw up their hands because he got too expensive on the open market. I'd like to see this organization run by someone who doesn't put his own ego and petty one-ups above common sense and the organization's best interest, f---ing pinhead Dolan. I don't think Sather calls all the shots, yet he takes the heat. Sorry for the mini-rant interruption. carry on :) )

Scott Lachance - CBJ
Andrew Cassels - CBJ (pending waiver clear)
Chris Gratton - COL
Matt Johnson - MIN
Mathieu Biron - FLA

That's all I've seen until now. And the buyout period is over... definitely less action then we all expected I would say.

At any rate, up next is the draft (I wonder who the #1 pick will be), then the UFA frenzy... now THAT'S gonna be some fun for sure as 100's of FA's look for a team to sign with. :pimp:

I have a soft spot for Amonte as he got his start with the Rangers. In fact his cousin was a friend of mine, and she was the one who told me he was getting called up in the middle of the playoffs.

I laughed her off, only to turn on the pre-game show, and find out that... mid-playoff series....the Rangers called upon Doug Weight and Tony Amonte to make their NHL debuts. Amonte was scared, he slipped and fell as soon as he hit the ice for his very first NHL shift. He also gave Rod Langway the business when he got the puck stuck in his equipment. Tony started digging at him with his stick to free the puck which sent Langway and the rest of the caps in his direction for a scrum.

But gettin back to the topic at hand. Amonte ain't worth 5 mill. Buying that out is a no-brainer.

I guess the GM's are still educating themselves on the new system before they make any major moves. Nolan was expected to be bought out sometime today though.

I don't think Nolan will be officially 'bought out' for a while now if the Legal System is going to be involved.

Possibly. Apparently his buying out won't count against the cap and Fergy might just buy him out and let the lawyers take care of whatever crap goes with it.

Would make sense.. the Leafs have an extra $40,000,000 to waste... I say the buyout is worth it to get rid of the headache.

What are all the other teams waiting for? I need something to talk about, some crazy speculation that Steve Yzerman wants to play for the Leafs or Gretzky has decided to play for the Coyotes now that Mario has Crosby. :D

Report: Coyotes buy out Brian Savage

Canadian Press

7/25/2005 12:01:10 PM

PHOENIX (CP) - The Coyotes have bought out left-winger Brian Savage, the Arizona Republic reported quoting ''multiple NHL sources''.

Savage, 34, was scheduled to make $2.85 million US this season. The Coyotes bought him out for $1.9 million, as per the new collective bargaining agreement which allows a one-time window to buy out contracts.

Phoenix acquired Savage and a third-round pick in the 2002 NHL draft in January 2002 for left-winger Sergei Berezin.

Savage, who missed 46 games in two-plus seasons in Phoenix due to injuries, had 24 goals in 134 games for the Coyotes. Phoenix traded Savage to St. Louis near the end of the 2003-04 season, but Savage's rights, and his remaining contract, were returned to the Coyotes after the season as a condition of the deal.

Red Wings drop the axe

Detroit has begun clearing its deck in preparation of the Aug. 1 free agent frenzy.

Sportsnet.ca -- The Detroit Red Wings have started their house cleaning.

Sportsnet has learned Detroit has placed Derian Hatcher, Darren McCarty and Ray Whitney on waivers.

Pending clearance following a 24 hour period, the Red Wings will undoubtedly buy the trio out.

Also, according to the Arizona Republic, the Coyotes' Brian Savage has joined the list of bought out players.

Savage was scheduled to make $2.85 million this season. The Coyotes bought him out for $1.9 million.

Phoenix acquired Savage, 34, and a third-round pick in the 2002 NHL draft on Jan. 25, 2002, for left wing Sergei Berezin.

Other rumblings around the league:

According to the Ottawa Sun, the Senators aren't the only ones who will be pursuing free agent Gary Roberts. The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Anaheim Mighty Ducks are also interested in the unrestricted free agent. Although Roberts' preference is to remain in Toronto, sources told the Sun his second choice would be Ottawa.

Habs decline team option on Briesbois

Canadian Press

7/25/2005 2:58:25 PM

MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens have decided not to exercise club options on the contracts of defenceman Patrice Brisebois and minor league forward Gavin Morgan.

Brisebois was to have earned $3.4 million US next season, after the 24 per cent rollback in player salaries contained in the new collective bargaining agreement.

The Montreal native's contract contained a buyout clause if the team option was not exercised. Brisebois, now an unrestricted free agent, is allowed to sign a new deal with Montreal at a lower salary if he chooses.

Brisebois, 34, spent his entire 14-year NHL career with Montreal and was the last remaining member of the Canadiens' 1993 Stanley Cup champion team.

In 791 career games, he has regular season 79 goals and 263 assists.

Morgan played 76 games for Hamilton of the AHL last season, when he scored 10 goals and added 23 assists. The Toronto native signed as a free agent with Montreal in July, 2004.

Habs decline team option on Briesbois....

This is technically not the type of buyout we're tracking in this thread. Briesbois has an option year on his contract with a buyout clause built-in. This is not a CBA related buyout, as evidenced by the fact that he is free to re-sign with the habs for a lesser amount. CBA buyouts prohibit the player from re-joining his former team at a lesser amount.

The 3 wings I listed technically did not get bought out either.... yet. From what I read they were placed on waivers, which would allow other teams to pick up their contracts, releasing the wings from their salaries completely. I went ahead and listed them because it's a given that no other team will grab their salaries... the wings will have to buy them out, at which time other interested teams can swoop in and try to land them for less money. (I think I got that right :) )

Isles won't buy out Yashin

Canadian Press

7/25/2005 5:26:12 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Islanders general manager Mike Milbury knows the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement will only help his team so much.

The rest is up to him and the players he puts on the ice.

"We always felt we could compete, but there was a feeling of frustration," Milbury said Monday. "We'll have a better chance, but we still have to make the right decisions."

Payrolls no longer are an issue when it comes to hockey. Gone are the days where big-market clubs could load up their rosters with all-stars no matter the cost.

The limit is $39 million US per team, whether you play in a sparkling new arena or the seen-its-better-days Nassau Coliseum.

"Let's face facts. We need our top guys to perform," Milbury said.

That starts with Alexei Yashin, who was slated to earn $10 million this season before a 24 per cent rollback cut his salary to $7.6 million - tied for second highest in the NHL.

Yashin scored 44 and 40 goals with Ottawa in the seasons before and after his yearlong holdout, which led to his trade to Long Island in June 2001. But he has only 73 goals in three seasons with New York. Injuries limited Yashin to 15 goals and 19 assists in 47 games during the 2003-04 season.

Yashin always has marched to the beat of his own drum and has not always been thought of as the best teammate, but the Islanders need more out of him if they are going to make their fourth straight trip to the playoffs.

Milbury has liked what he has seen and heard recently from his star forward. Yashin told Milbury that he wants to be the go-to guy, and has committed to coming to Long Island next month to work out with other players in the organization.

"At that kind of money, he's got to be the go-to guy," Milbury said.

The Islanders only have four players under contract for next season. Although he has until Friday to decide, Milbury is not going to buy out anyone before the deadline.

His main concern is his defence corps. Janne Niinimaa is the only blue-liner with a deal, and Adrian Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik and Kenny Jonsson are all free agents. Aucoin has expressed a desire to come back, and Milbury already has been in contact with him.

Jonsson, who has been with the Islanders since 1996, is not expected to return.

"I haven't spoken to him in a long time," Milbury said. "He didn't call. After nine years we thought that would be the nice thing to do."

Milbury expects a lot of talented players to be available on the open market, including many forwards. He will be shopping, but doesn't want his payroll to be much above $30 million heading into the season.

He will look at some players bought out by teams who need to cut payroll to fit under the cap. But he will be somewhat leery of those that are simply set free.

"Obviously that depends on the player," he said. "There's got to be a reason to buy them out other than just the money. They're still going to get good money to play. I don't see (John) LeClair falling into a $450,000 range (the NHL minimum)."

Philadelphia bought out LeClair and Tony Amonte over the weekend. LeClair would have earned $6.84 million this season.
