View Full Version : Tanenbaum - Leafs Are #1 Franchise
And Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, admitted Friday he wasn't always on side with the league's game plan.
''It was reported that we were sometimes a dissenting voice,'' said Tanenbaum. ''That is true.''
And he made no apologies for it. The Leafs, in his opinion, reserve the right to voice their opinions.
''We are the No. 1 franchise in the NHL,'' Tanenbaum said. ''As far as I'm concerned we will always continue to be the No. 1 franchise in the NHL. We acted when we had these discussions with our colleagues at the governors meetings.
''We're acting very much in the interests of the No. 1 team, the one that has priority for us, the Toronto Maple Leafs. We have no regret about it.''
Apparently winning isn't all that important.

I hate Tannenbaum, but I think he meant it in the context of revenue.

Yes, with financial parody in the NHL now TML will have to resort to media propoganda to pound their chest.

He could, although with all of their playoff gate revenue I'm not sure that he's always beaten the likes of Colorado and Detroit. Rangers (most likely) hammered them in a few years as well, espeacilly in the early 90's.
Larry Tanenbaum is #1 as well. #1 at being a dillweed. I think the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund needs to slap Larry around for a while, maybe even bring back the paddle.
So the Leafs have a lot of fans/brainless sheep that are willing to part with their life savings to enjoy a Leafs game, that still doesn't mean they are #1 in the league. I rather listen to the opinions of management from recent Stanley Cup winners, then the Leafs' blowhards.

Well, it's a little comforting to hear that our management believes itself to be number one. I wish they would prove their assessment of the team on the ice one of these years though
Anyways, I would expect all teams consider their team number one in the league as it comes to their place in the league, for some reason the Leaf franchise are the only ones who dared to say it... now you guys know where we get it from :thumb:

I agree...what executive in the league isn't going to believe that his team is #1 in a league.

The Stupid leaf was the dissenting voice among NHL owners and governors. No wonder everyone outside of the brainwashed leaf nation of retardation absolutely hates the leaf. They bring it upon themselves.

All Tatenbaum means is that MLSE is the #1 corporation in the world. He said nothing above about the Leafs fans or the Leaf team or the game of hockey, because MLSE could care less about any one of those.
Please if you are going to quote an article at least include the whole quote, I understand there is a lot of bitterness towards the Leafs and the orginisation, but if you are going to slam or trash them then please make sure you put the WHOLE quote in there and not slant it to your own way of thinking!!!!!
Here is the entire quote that was in the Star Article about Owen Nolan possibly being bought out:
On the surface, the new collective bargaining agreement looks like a windfall for the Leafs, the No. 1 team in the league for producing revenues. The Leafs were desperate to get hockey going again last season and there were reports that Tanenbaum was shouted down by the other governors at a board meeting last year when he tried to push for more concessions for the players.
"It was reported that we were sometimes a dissenting voice," Tanenbaum said. "That is true. But we did so because we were also representing the Toronto Maple Leafs and our fans."

I fail to see the point you're trying to make Rusty.
I fail to see the point you're trying to make Rusty.
Neither do I, especially when you read what is written further down in the article.
But Leaf fans looking for a reduction in the highest ticket prices in the league likely won't get what they're seeking. The Leafs will almost certainly hold the line on ticket prices this season.
The richest owners in hockey with the most avenues to create revenue keeping the same ticket prices while the cost of operating their team drops by almost 40%. Yeah, MLSE is all about the hockey fan.

Sorry if I sound whiney but I am getting sick and tired of hearing how money hungry, greedy and fan unfriendly the Leafs are.
So much so that most likely I am going to leave these forums so that you won't have to worry about about me whining to you guys anymore................

Why are you getting so defensive? None of this banter has attacked you personally. MLSE is a big corporation, and I'm sure them being challenged like this isn't going to hurt them in the slightest. IMO more people should be challenging MLSE and not less. But it's just my opinion.
I totally see what you guys are getting at, but I am just getting tired of seeing the same thing over and over again, whether it is jealousy or hatred it is really starting to grate on my nerves.
IMHO it really does not matter what we Leaf fans think about what you Leaf haters have to say, we will always be pigeon holed as whiney sheep.
I am seriously thinking about taking a LONG break from here and certain other places, I have already made announcements in both Mod lounges that I will not be participating in both forums due mainly to my failing interest in the whole forum scene and the recent lockout.

No-one's 'jealous' of the Leafs Rusty, as hard as that is for some Leaf fans to grasp. MLSE is about as honest of a Corp. as ENRON.
Have a good rest, and come back soon Rusty.

The key quote in Rusty's quote is:
On the surface, the new collective bargaining agreement looks like a windfall for the Leafs, the No. 1 team in the league for producing revenues
Which goes to prove that Tannenbaum was speaking in the context that the leafs were #1 in producing revenues, which they are. Not as PDO said, which is ironic he said this since he posted the article,
Apparently winning isn't all that important.
Obviously Tannenbaum didn't mean his comment in this context. PDO obviously cut off the key part of information to make MLSE look bad. Now like I said, i'm not exactly a huge fan of leaf ownership, but it isn't fair to make allegations like this. This is just pure blind sided leaf hatred.
That's the point Rusty was trying to make and it was very valid.
That is exactly what I was getting at John.
Thank you.
But I don't expect people who blindly hate the Leafs to look at it in the same light as us Leaf fan.

Nobody blindly hates the Stupid leaf. We hate because we despise what this criminal Canadian entity has got away with. May the Stupid leaf rot in hell with all their money soaked from the blind. Smarter cheering hockey fans will prevail.
Sorry I should have chosen my words more carefully, I knew some individual would twist my words.
Hatred I am sorry but your act is getting stale..........................
