A top 10 pick! Amazing! In a class full of top-end talent, some of which will no doubt be left a #9, talent we can get a real fine prospect. Even better, the second rounder Washington has of ours is quite low thanks to snaking order. Twice as good. :) A guy like Brule or Ryan could be had if lucky. With our great scouting staff I feel confident we will grab a very nice propsect. As for the NYR apparently winning a rigged draft, those rumours were today proved false (as we all could've gathered). The Rangers, with 3 lottery balls, will infact pick quite a bit later than us who only had 1 ball. Two Cup Contenders (us and Vancouver) get a top 10 pick. Fortunate for us but also unfair for the others who deserved a high position. We pick 9th and Calgary 26th - the system definatly has flaws but no Sens fan should be complaining. Draft order (Canadian teams bolded):

1. Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Anaheim Mighty Ducks
3. Carolina Hurricanes
4. Minnesota Wild
5. Montreal Canadiens
6. Columbus Blue Jackets
7. Chicago Blackhawks
8. Atlanta Thrashers
9. Ottawa Senators
10. Vancouver Canucks
11. Los Angeles Kings
12. San Jose Sharks
13. Buffalo Sabres
14. Washington Capitals
15. New York Islanders
16. New York Rangers
17. Phoenix Coyotes
18. Nashville Predators
19. Detroit Red Wings
20. Philadelphia Flyers
21. Toronto Maple Leafs
22. Bostin Bruins
23. New Jersey Devils
24. St. Louis Blues
25. Edmonton Oilers
26. Calgary Flames
27. Colorado Avalanche
28. Dallas Stars
29. Florida Panthers
30. Tampa Bay Lightning

You guys certainly are lucky. At that position you might get one of the big 6 to fall down to 9. This draft is incredibly deep, a pick at #9 is just as good as one in the top 5 this year. Leave it to the stinkin sens to get this kind of luck. It'll be interesting to see who you pick, I'll leave my annoyance until then.

5. Montreal CanadiensUH? ;)

As I mentioned in another thread, after the Oilers went out so early, my focus went right to the Senators and things really did get exciting as more and more envelopes opened without their logo.

With only one ball in the lottery, a top ten pick is definitely impressive. Ottawa should be proud that the Senator ball popped out so early. With this draft being so deep in talent, their no. 9 pick will not be a slouch. Good for you guys. Enjoy. :thumb:

The 9th ranked player heading to the draft is actually the big LW'er Jack Skille, John IIRC. Big, speedy, strong, and very "safe" he could fill a nice hole in Ottawa. Like the physical game.

From TSN.ca:

A product of the U.S. under-18 program, Skille has the requisite speed, skill and tenacity to be a sure-fire NHLer. Skille will attend the University of Wisconsin next season. If there's a knock on him, some scouts question hockey sense, but no so much as to be a major impediment. In TSN's survey of NHL scouts, Skille was a consensus pick between spots five and 10, and even those who didn't like him that high, rated him no lower than 10 to 15.

But we all know how players shift on draft day...... at any rate, this draft is so deep at the top and we were so lucky to get this position, the Sens should come away with a very servicable future NHL'er.

TBH I don't know much about Skille but all I've heard about him are good things. He should be a pretty safe pick at #9, and he would address some concerns for Ottawa down the road.

Muckler from the TEAM 1200:

- No buyouts.

- The Sens will pick Tri-City American (WHL) goaltender Carey Price if he's still around at #9. Price is ranked 7th overall and the concensis #1 amongst goalies but is no draft-day standout like Lehtonen or Fleury. Very strange. GM's never say who they're going to pick this much prior to the draft, barring a TOP prospects ala Corsby/Ovechkin. Even stranger, after Emery really heated up at the end of the season/playoffs Muckler said he was extremely pleased with his group of goalie prospects. Glass and Thompson had huge seasons aswell. IMO, Mucks is blowing smoke hoping others teams will buy the false hype, increasing our odds of landing player X who happens to be a skater.

Price in Ottawa doesn't make sense to me either, unless they don't feel confident in Emery because of his inconsistancy.

With Prusek, Emery, Thompson, Glass and Guard I doubt selecting Price is a smart move  I'd rather go with Jack Skile or even Alex Bourret.

That's probably exactly what it is John. Ray's stock has dropped considerably over the past 2 years, his own inconsitency to blame.
You can never have enough goaltending prospects IMO. I like this idea...

Definetly agree... makes sense for Ottawa.. also sucks for the Canucks.

On Emery, his stock only really dropped this season due to his weak campaigne as we all know. But he played very well down the stretch and in the playoffs, so he did manage to make a bit of ammends.

Anyway, taking Price isn't a wise move IMO. Ottawa got very lucky getting the 9th selection, and using it on a netminder would be foolish. Price is a fine prospect and would be the best goalie in our system, but I'm not convinced the difference between him and Emery is all that great. I'd have no issues taking him at say 12th or lower, I'd be thrilled if we got him at 23rd where we picked last year, but at #9 I think we can address another franchise need while taking much less of a gamble. How many 1st round goalies have panned out recently? Two - Luongo and Di Pietro. And they were much better talents, going in the top 5 of their draft class. Lehtonen and Fleury may be added in the future, but they too were much better and taken much higher. Price doesn't belong in the same breath as those guys and I'm not willing to take a chance on him at #9. How many 1st round goalies have busted/became only average at best? Far too many (tow of 'em picked by Ottawa). We don't need Price to do the same.

Meawhile, talented, gritty players who play a sound two-way game are tough to find. Lucky enough, one will likely be around when we pick. I think Jack Skille should be had if possible although O'Marra and Bourret would also be great. Here's hoping Brule falls ala Schremp/Meszaros, but you can't count on that.

** As time goes by, I begin to think more and more that Muckler is simply blowing smoke to hype Price up, hoping Chicago takes Price with no young goalies in their system to speak of leaving Ottawa with another skater around. Back in '96 as GM of the Sabres he held a draft related press conference. He specifically told the press that the Sabres were going to pick Josh Holden if available. Holden was still on the board when Buffalo was up but they opted for Erik Rasmussen instead.

**Muckler was also quoted today (Ottawa Sun) as saying our scouts were very excited to get #9 and were confident they could find a prospect ready to step in to the big club if not this year, than pretty soon so high in the draft. That doesn't sound like Carey Price. Not only do netminders take longer to develop, Price isn't a big talent ala Fleury or Lehtonen (both of whom aren't in the NHL yet). If we're so high on Price, why put him in the big club so soon when he's not ready? All it does it give him one more year of NHL experience when AHL experience would more than suffice, effectively making a UFA far too soon.

So...wait a second...is the lockout over yet? ;) gidday guys. Glad there's some hockey to talk about. I was out camping this weekend and just managed to barely make out the live coverage on the team 1200 but needless to say I was pumped about #9. I don't know if I fully understand the idea of picking another goalie prospect with the depth that we have....but maybe that's why I'm not an NHL GM. Anyways, now that there are some new hockey topics to discuss, I hope to make it around here more frequently.

Things are good my man, except that I'm a little burned from the weekend. I'm excited for the new hockey season and it's still freakin' 2 months away. I also wanted to touch on the Roberts-to-Ottawa thing, but I guess that's off-limits ;) Uhh....go sens go.
