Ranek rushes to weekly honours
TORONTO (CP) -- Josh Ranek, who rushed for 164 yards in the Ottawa Renegades' 33-18 win over the Calgary Stampeders, was named the CFL's offensive player of the week Wednesday.
Ranek moved into second overall in CFL rushing with 311 yards, 78 behind Saskatchewan's Corey Holmes. Ranek also had five catches for 48 yards in the win over Calgary. Ottawa receiver Yo Murphy and Saskatchewan quarterback Nealon Greene were the finalists.
Winnipeg defensive back William Fields captured defensive player honours. Fields had two interceptions and three tackles in the Bombers' 14-12 loss to Edmonton.Teammate Wes Lysack and Calgary linebacker George White were also considered.
Winnipeg defensive end Gavin Walls is the lineman of the week. Walls registered three sacks and two tackles in the loss to Edmonton. Defensive end Brent Johnson of the B.C. Lions and Calgary's Rahim Abdullah were the runners-up.
The top special teams player was Tony Tompkins of the Edmonton Eskimos. Tompkins had eight punt returns for 142 yards versus Winnipeg, including one for 80 yards, and also returned two kickoffs for 67 yards. Tompkins is the CFL's leading punt returner with 16 returns for 316 yards and a touchdown.
Punter Jon Ryan and linebacker Neil McKinlay, both of Winnipeg, were also considered.
