Wild showdown out west
*The Lions improved to 3-0 with their second victory over the Grey Cup champions this season and have not lost in their last 10 starts at B.C. Place Stadium.
VANCOUVER (CP) -- Quarterback Dave Dickenson threw three touchdown passes and the B.C. Lions survived a scare for the second week in a row Friday in a wild 30-22 CFL victory over the Toronto Argonauts.
Dickenson hit Geroy Simon with a 73-yard bomb and also connected with Tony Simmons and Jason Clermont as the Lions remained the league's only unbeaten team. However, the Lions gave up touchdowns 36 seconds apart to squander a 23-1 lead early in the second half.
Rookie Hakim Hill got the first Argo TD on a two yard run after quarterback Damon Allen completed three passes in a row, including a 32-yard strike to Tony Miles. The second touchdown came when the snap soared over Dickenson's head and was recovered by defensive end Jonathan Brown who rambled 14 yards to the end zone.
The miscue was similar to kick returner Jerel Myers' end zone fumble last week that gave the Ottawa Renegades hope in a 37-29 loss to the Lions. B.C. also needed a third down sack of Allen by Nautyn McKay-Loeschar with 56 seconds remaining and a fumble recovery by Barrin Simpson with 40 seconds left after a Dickenson interception.
B.C. had given up 12 sacks in their first two games but the defence responded with a season-high eight sacks, including three for Brent Johnson, while Dickenson was sacked four times. The Lions improved to 3-0 with their second victory over the Grey Cup champions this season and have not lost in their last 10 starts at B.C. Place Stadium.
The defending Grey Cup champion Argos remained tied with the Montreal Alouettes atop the East Division as their record slipped to 2-2. Kicker Duncan O'Mahoney made two of four field goal attempts, a single and three converts for the Lions who also got a safety when Argo kicker Noel Prefontaine conceded in the end zone.
R. Jay Soward got the other Toronto touchdown while Prefontaine added a single and three converts. Dickenson was good on 26 of 34 passes for 362 yards while Allen connected on 25 of 39 attempts for 281 yards. The Lions used the big play and a turnover to forge a 22-1 halftime lead.
After being sacked for the second time, Dickenson unloaded his scoring strike to Simon who had Argo cornerback Adrion Smith beaten by 10 yards when he gathered in the pass. The completion came with only 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The other touchdown of the 19-point quarter came after Hill fumbled a shovel pass from Allen when hit by Tyrone Williams of the Lions. Brent Johnson recovered the ball on the Toronto 35. Dickenson wasted no time, hitting Clermont for 17 yards and then firing an 18-yard pass to Simmons for the TD.
Notes : Chris Hoople of the Lions suffered a dislocated shoulder in the first half and did not return. ..... The Argos arrived in Vancouver on Wednesday, a day earlier than usual. ..... Toronto running back John Avery stayed home to nurse a groin injury. ..... Canadian linebacker Ray Mariusz made his first CFL start for the Grey Cup champs. ..... Linebacker Carl Kidd and offensive lineman Bobby Singh were activated from the injury list by the Lions. ..... The game matched the CFL's top two passing offences.
Shizza the East is turning into a crap-shoot, I'm really liking the 'Gades more and more as the eventual #1 in the East this season. Quote that biaaaaaaaaaatch...
