The other thread was about what I wanted to happen, this thread is what I think will happen.
It won't be rebuilding. The resigning of Pat Quinn tells me they're going for it yet again. JFJ is going to have to pull a rabbit out of his ass to bring this team to the playoffs but it just may be possible. The leafs current payroll is at about 26.8 million for 9 players.
Mats Sundin- 6.8 mil
Owen Nolan- 4.9 mil
Ed Belfour- 4.6 mil
Bryan Mccabe- 3.5 mil
Tomas Kaberle- 2.3 mil
Ken Klee- 1.9 mil
Darcy Tucker- 1.6 mil
Matt Stajan- 800k
Mikeal Tellqvist- 400k
Buy Out- Owen Nolan
Brings Payroll down to 21.9 million
Restricted free agents
Nik Antropov, Alex Ponikarovsky, Carlo Colaiocovo, Chad Kilger, Aki Berg
Resign
Antropov- 1 mil
Ponikarovsky- 800k
Carlo Colaiocovo- 700k
Chad Kilger- 700k
Brings Payroll Up To 24.2
Unrestricted Free Agents
Brian Leetch
Joey Nieuwendyk
Gary Roberts
Ron Francis
Drake Berehowsky
Trevor Kidd
Alex Mogilny
Tie Domi
Resign
Joey N- 2 mil
Gary R- 2.5 mil
Brian Leetch- 3.2 million
Alex Mogilny- 1.5 million
Brings Payroll up to 33.4 mil.
Free Agent Signings
Eric Lindros or Jason Allison- 1.5 million (with performance bonuses)
Adam Foote- 2.5 million
Brings Payroll up to 37.4 million
Gary Roberts - Mats Sundin - Alex Mogilny
Matt Stajan - Lindros or Allison - Darcy Tucker
Alex Ponikarovsky - Joey N - Nik Antropov SKY LINE
Nathan Perrot - Alex Steen - Chad Kilger
Brian Leetch- Bryan Mccabe
Tomas Kaberle - Adam Foote
Carlo Colaiocovo - Ken Klee
Ed Belfour
Mikeal Tellqvist
It's certainly a stretch, but do any of you think it's possible? I wish they'd rebuild but if they want another kick at the can then go ahead I suppose.
END PAYROLL- 37.4 This gives us some good footing underneath the 39 million dollar cap. Plus it gives me some room in case I messed up in there. It's good to stay just under to give the GM that necessary wiggle room just in case something happens and there is some decent help in the farm that could be ready to come up.
Examples-
Kyle Wellwood
Brendan Bell
Ian White
Ben Ondrus
Harold Druken

I hope Niewy, Roberts, and Mogilny are all gone. Up front I'd go for Lindros and Allison (I know I know, they're injury prone, but hopefully they'll come cheap). I'd like to see someone like Kariya or Demitra added, but we have no idea what the new market will be for these players so I'm not sure the Leafs would be able to add anyone of that calibre.
I like how that defense looks NJ, but I'd flip Foote and McCabe. Leetch would be better off playing with a defensive defensemen, and McCabe and Kaberle have played together in the past and have had success.
Also, I'm not sure how performance bonuses would work, but with players like Lindros and Allison they'd probably be charged against the cap from the start of the season. Assuming the league goes with the NFL model for performance bonuses. Although I haven't read an article that has addressed that issue yet. If anyone has the info it would be greatly appreciated.

Roberts, Mogilny and Nieuwendyk are older guys and guys I wouldn't mind seeing departed also... as much as it breaks my heart to say it. Sure, I'd rather guys like Kariya and Demitra to come in, but we just wouldn't be able to afford that under the cap.

I see your point but the way Mccabe and Leetch played at the end of last year I had to put them together. I bet Foote and Leetch could have a good connection too though.

I heard that if the player reaches those bonuses he is paid them, but they go against the cap the year later. Not sure though.

Well in the NFL they have Likely to be Earned and Non-Likely to be Earned incentives (I'll assume the NHL will use something similar since they will also have a hardcap). So if a player has a bonus that says he has to reach 30 goals and he's done that in the past, then it would be a LTBE incentive and charged against the cap for the upcoming season. If has hasn't scored 30 in the past then it would be a NLTBE incentive and after the season if he reaches the mark then it would be charged to the cap next season. Although if the team had cap room in the previous season then the organization I think could add the bonuses to the payroll from the previous year.
The NHL could do something completely different though   :thumb:
Uh..
Adam Foote- 2.5 million
In 03-04, Foote was paid 4.3
4.3 * .76 = 3.49
No way he takes off another million. If he's willing to play for that cheap, he stays in Colorado.

Don't be so sure. Colarado is in a downright HORRIBLE position going into this. They may not have the cap room to resign Foote if they plan on not buying out Blake. Plus, if we bring him up to 3, the leafs are still under the cap at 37.9 . We'd still have 1.1 million in cap space but like I said you want some wiggle room.

Colorado could be worse off, really. Admittingly they're not good, but Foote will (atleast IMO) still go off to the highest bidder. There are a lot of teams who will be willing and able to pay more than the Leafs.. so why does he go there? There's all sorts of rumours flying around that Forsberg and Foote are willing to re-sign for cheap in order to stay a contender. I suppose we'll find out how true they are in less than 20 days! :)

True but keep in mind it doesn't have to be Foote. There are other defencemen out there of the same value.

I'm just looking at the list there and I think the Sundin contract is extremely high for what we have to work with and what Mats is actually worth under the new CBA. Realistically if Mats stays healthy and has a career or even a return to form year in the supposed new system he is still almost at that 20% number that a player cannot exceed. Now I would hope that he would take a paycut for the good of the team, but since a year of hockey is gone and all players already lost millions by losing a season, I suspect it will not happen so I think the Leafs need to decide right now if Mats and his 6.8 million dollar contract are right for the future of the team under the new CBA. Let's put things into perspective, at 39 million you are not working with a lot especially with so many players who are UFAs probably going to the highest bidder rather then best chance for a cup with the lockout taking a toll on player's wallets. So assuming the Leafs do in fact buy out Nolan they are then at 21.9 million or giving away more then 56% of the cap space on 7 players, which leaves them to fill a roster of 13 more players at only 44% of the cap. To say JFJ has his work cut out is an understatement and unless players really do want to play in Toronto for less money like the Toronto media has led us to believe we are in some serious trouble, unless of course we win the lottery
