That was a pretty good article, although I think I'm even further depressed thinking that Stevens, Niedermayer, and Rafalski may all be gone for the Devils this season. Oh well, if Lou is still the GM, I'm sure he'll find a way to keep the team competitive. I can't wait for this offseason to start, it should be interesting.

Much as it'd be nice for the Rangers to free up the $8.4 million they're paying Jagr, that doesn't seem likely, especially if, as reported, the Capitals are still responsible for half of Jagr's salary.

It's been common knowledge since the Rangers aquired Jagr that the Caps pay half. That was in the trade terms. Makes me wonder what other areas the authors are misinformed, or at least unsure.

It is a good team by team reference though. :thumb:

This will be intresting
Player(s) who we think will be bought out: Alexei Yashin ($7.6 million)
Alexei Yashin provides an interesting dilemma for the Islanders. For one thing, he hasn't come close to earning the money they signed him for. And even after the 24 percent rollback, he'll still be making $7.6 million in 2005-06. But according to Newsday, it would cost the Islanders $28 million to buy Yashin out, as he has four years left on his deal.
Do they suck it up and shell out $28 million to rid themselves of a huge mistake? Or do they keep Yashin, and his enormous-yet-untapped potential around so they don't have to pony up a big chunk of change?
We're guessing they'll bite the bullet and rid themselves of Yashin and his anchor of a contract, giving them room under the cap to compete with other teams in the free-agent pool.

The Isls are screwed... If they buy him out they'll still be accountable for around 7 million over 4 years on their payroll. I love the fact Yashin?s become a loser in so many ways :D

Other then the big $$$$ :conspire:

Yah I was thinking the same thing... I thought more players needed to be signed for Ottawa if he's basing it on last years contracts being void. But I could also be misinformed

No if they buy him out, that erases his salary from the books, and frees up the cap room that he would have used up. That's the point of the buyouts, to make cap room.

Catch is that they have to pay him 2/3 of his full remaining contract in one chunk (28 mill in his case) and they cannot re-sign him for any amount for at least a year.

As for Jagr, he is set to be paid just over 4 mill a year from both the Rangers and the Caps each. Great deal for the Rangers... I don't know how the Caps can buy out Jagr... if they can at all.

Moral of the story... deals with high salary players of longer than 3-5 years were very bad moves in retrospect. You either have to pay a fortune to buy them out... or keep them around and they hinder you from re-building.

This is partly why the Rangers dumped so many guys in spring of 04, because of an uncertain future (in addtion obviously to years of failure). After they buy out Holik and Kasparitis. They'll be in just as good of a position as any team to re-build and Jagr will not be a cap hog.

I don't know what they're basing it on either. They list Eric Lindros as a Rangers UFA.

Last summer (04) the Rangers declined an option to extend Lindros... releasing him from their service. So his Ranger days were over even pre-lockout. Perhaps they just consider UFA's to belong to the teams they most recently played for in 03/04.

For some reason I though the remaining 1/4 had to go towards the total team salary of that year. But I guess what you say would make more sense for both sides

Well actually, since nothing is official yet, I have no idea. I was just going by what I've heard as rumor to this point. The 2/3 buyout will erase that player from the payroll effective immediately.

It's probably not that simple, we'll see when the deal is unveiled.

Well atleast they get to enjoy their funds in American dollars. And then there's always the modest sponsership and advertisment contract cheques that should help to ease the burden a little.
