View Full Version : Sykora's Value?
Here we go.. shipping this idea out ;).
Sykora can play center. He has a stanley cup ring, has scored 40+ goals 3 times, and played in NJ, so he has some sort of defensive awareness. After the rollback his salary comes in at 3.1 million. The Ducks are a mucking fess of a team.
So, I suppose my question is, what does it take to pry him out of Anahiem and into Edmonton?
The original trade...
New Jersey sent Sykora, Mike Commodore, J.F. Damphousse and Igor Pohanka to Anaheim in exchange for Oleg Tverdovsky, Jeff Friesen and Maxim Balmochnykh.http://www.hockeystation.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=6#

I'd imagine since then his value has dropped, in which case instead of being worth an aging PP specialist and a third liner, could it be a third liner? If that's the case, would a second round pick and say.. Roman Tesliuk (mid-level prospect), get the job done?

IMO, he is like Satan. No, not that satan, the sabres dude
He would be an excellent fit in Oiltown, and probably produce atleast 30 goals
From TSN
Has improved in the NHL since moving to right wing, where he can use his speed to blow past defenders and release his deceptive shot from anywhere.
So, I'm not sure I would want him as a center. A winger, why not. Plus, he is a career plus 71..not too bad.
I would say, a 2nd round pick would do the trick. Or perhaps Isbister with a 4th round pick
I could live with having him as a RW...
Smyth - Horcoff - Sykora => Horcoff has very under-rated setup skills, Smyth is all around productive and Sykora would be the obvious "one-shot" finisher that Lowe has wet dreams about. In a perfect world Hemsky would fit into Horcoff's spot, as those passes heading to Sykora would be pretty sweet.
York - Hemsky - Dvorak => York and Dvorak are both great defensively, and can both finish reasonably well. Hemsky had a solid season in the Czech league as a Center, and Lowe has mentioned wanting to try him out at it.

Agreed on Horcoff. The oil may just have to settle with him as the no.1 guy, and give him a shot
BUT..how about to sign Langkow? I'm pretty sure he will be a UFA.
Then, make the trade for Sykora
Smyth-Langkow-Sykora
Pretty decent top line, if you ask me. Langkow is from Edmonton, and probably would prefer to play there, and the Oil's style..if given the chance.

Langkow would be a dream signing for two reason.
#1 He'd solve our problem
#2 It means Calgary gave up Gautier and Saprykin for nothing
Smyth - Langkow - Sykora
York - Horcoff - Hemsky/Dvorak
Torres - Reasoner - Hemsky/Dvorak
Suddenly we look like a contender!

I think Sykora is scheduled to make around $3 million with the rollback (I could be wrong on this), so I guess it depends on how badly the Ducks want to get his contract off the books. IMO, Sykora's talents would be going to waste if he stayed with the Ducks. His speed, scoring ability, and defensive awareness would make him a very good fit with the Oilers. Of course, I'd love to seem him return to New Jersey, but I know it won't happen.
A 2nd round pick, and maybe a decent prospect would probably get Sykora away from the Ducks, depending on how badly they want to hold on to him. With Fedorov's already ridiculous contract, they may be looking to dump some other relatively high salary guys (although Sykora isn't too expensive).

I'd say its a realistic idea too. On both Cowtown, and the Oil..he would be the top center.
Plus, he would come cheaper than most others..and is durable..a perfect fit of grit/talent for the Oilers.
That top line would be gritty, and also dangerous

That won't get it done. If he became available that cheap, the Rangers would get him, and pay way too much for him.
