Special win for Stamps
Calgary receiver Nikolas Lewis scored the game's only touchdown off a blocked punt in the first quarter, giving coach Tom Higgins his first win as a Stampeder.
WINNIPEG (CP)
Calgary rookie kicker Sandro DeAngelis booted four field goals as the Stampeders beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 21-15 on Thursday. Calgary (1-1) earned their first win of the season while the Bombers (0-3) are still searching for their first win in what head coach Jim Daley calls a "rebuilding" season.
The game's only touchdown came at 2:16 of the first quarter during Winnipeg's first series. Stampeders receiver Nikolas Lewis blocked a Jon Ryan punt, spun around, followed the bouncing ball and ran 10 yards into the end zone. Lewis also had five catches for 96 yards. The Stampeders also added a safety in their first road win since last June.
Winnipeg kicker Troy Westwood kicked four field goals and a single, while Ryan added a pair of punt singles from 78 and 80 yards. Calgary went ahead 9-0 midway through the first quarter when they pinned the Bombers deep and Ryan conceded the safety. DeAngelis then booted a 21-yard field goal to cap a seven-play, 53-yard drive that included 36 rushing yards from Joffrey Reynolds, who finished the game with 81 yards on 16 carries.
The Bombers only had one first down in the first quarter, and it didn't get much better in the second quarter to the disappointment. Winnipeg cornerback Justin Coleman intercepted a Henry Burris pass, but Westwood was wide on a 37-yard field goal attempt for a single point that drew boos from the crowd of 23,236 in a windy Canad Inns Stadium.
Westwood made amends with a pair of field goals, but DeAngelis added one of his own to give Calgary a 15-7 lead at halftime. DeAngelis and Westwood each had a pair of field goals in the second half and Ryan booted his long singles. With the score 21-15 and about 2:30 left in the game, Bomber wide receiver Kamau Peterson dropped a long bomb pass from Tee Martin that may have been taken all the way for a touchdown.
Burris finished the game completing 16 of 33 pass attempts for 202 yards and one interception. Martin was 12-of-22 for 130 yards. Bomber Charles Roberts rushed 21 times for 108 yards.
Notes: Calgary offensive lineman Jamie Crysdale played in his 207th consecutive regular-season game last night, putting him in 13th place on the all-time CFL list. ..... The Bombers were without veteran slotback Milt Stegall, who suffered a concussion late in last week's game against Edmonton. Since 2001, the Bombers are 1-5 when Stegall doesn't dress.
I think we all got that one fellas...
EDIT - Just when I thought CFL officiating couldnt get any worse, they prove me wrong. That was brutal..
