Former NHL enforcer charged with assault
By CP
WINDSOR, Ont. -- Former NHL player Bob Probert appeared in court yesterday charged with assault and intent to resist arrest.
Probert, 40, was arrested by provincial police Friday morning at a house in Lakeshore, about 30 kilometres east of Windsor, after receiving reports that a man had become violent and was damaging property.
Police attempted to arrest the man, but he continued to resist them, according to OPP Senior Const. Deb Mineau.
The former NHL enforcer was taken to the Lakeshore police station and subsequently released on bail pending a court appearance at a later date.
Probert played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks during a 16-year career that had its share of off-ice problems involving alcohol and drugs.
He was placed on inactive status for the 1994-95 season after he was involved in a motorcycle accident and tests showed alcohol and cocaine in his system.
He ranks fifth all time in NHL career penalty minutes with 3,300. He had 163 goals and 221 assists before concluding his career in 2002.
