Big Board: Hockey

By Matt Romig
July 1, 2005

Big Boards: Football | Baseball | Basketball | Hockey

The Big Board takes into consideration past returns, current performance and expected future gains in determining who should be included among the top 50 fantasy hockey players. Essentially, the Big Board is a cheat sheet designed for a fantasy owner who is planning to participate in a draft today. Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Hockey default scoring settings are used as the baseline for the Big Board, which is updated on a weekly basis.

Cloutier is 26, McCabe is 41, Hasek is 20 and Lidstrom doesn't quite make it???? :conspire:

Remember, this is fantasy sports guys. All the dmen rated higher than Nik put up better offensive numbers than him last year. Nik also saw a great decline in production, going from 62 points to 38 last year. As for Cloutier and Hasek, they're goalies that play for winnings teams. Both are guys who can anchor a fantasy squad.

Would I take Pronger or Chara over Lidstrom? yeah probably.

But I would take Lidstrom over Leetch or McCabe (or Schneider or Redden for that matter).

As long as Detroit remains a strong team... Niklas is great for +/- and PPP.

I won't mention who the list is missing that makes it laughable because I'll be against all of you soon enough.. but wow, I hope everyone I'm against uses that list like the gospel :D

Good that Yahoo is bringing it back!

This will be the most challenging season to draft for, because we won't quite know where players are going, or if they will retire.

Should be interesting!

Welcome to Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Hockey (http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey), a free game that gives you the chance to run your own team of real professional hockey players.

With recent announcement of a new labour agreement, we eagerly anticipate getting the 2005-06 season underway. We will begin accepting sign-ups in August.Once again, stay tuned.

So it looks like we'll have at least two in house pools (The Insider's & the Sens Pick'em one I'll run in the Sens Thread), the Yahoo one, the SN one, the Faceoff.com one if it's still around....that's 5 so far. Am I forgetting any other ones? More more more!!!

Well they updated the big board at Yahoo. Sidney Crosby is on the bubble now despite having never played a single NHL game.

Nik Lidstrom continues to be on the bubble.... looking from the outside in on fellow D-men: Leetch, MCCabe, Schneider, Zidlicky, and Redden! gimme a break... Lidstrom should be above all of them.

Other gripes:

- Jason Allison is in the top 50. Play 50 games in one season again, before being recognized as a top 50 player.

- Patrik Elias is #40, this board is supposed to be for fantasy value... as I understand it Elias is ill, and won't be playing any time soon.

- Marty Turco is #4 overall - way over-rated. Roloson (#47) is as good of a fantasy pick as Turco. Roloson is a better or equal fantasy player to any of these:

Cloutier (#25)
Cujo (#24)
Aebischer (#17)
Nabokov (#13)
Kiprusoff (#12)

- Tkachuk (#14) over the hill IMO.

- Vinny Lecavalier should be ranked higher than #43

- Richards on the bubble? There's a few guys he could/should be ahead of in the top 50.

There's probably a whole lot more yapping I could do about Yahoo's top 50... but if Im gonna make work tomorrow this old dog's gotta hit the sack :)

good night.

Tkachuk can give you a goal, an assist, and 17 PIM in one game :thumb:

Your're right. He had almost a point-per-game last year with 71 iin 75. I stand corrected.... for some reason I just have it stuck in my head that the he was older than he is. I also don't get to see him play that often as he's always been in the Western conference.

He did drop off in PIM last year tallying only 83. That was the only year he failed to break 100 except for 99/00 when he only played 50 games.

Anyway thanks for the reminder.... I'll remember come draft day :thumb:

Edit: Another guy who gives you a good mix of Scoring and PIM is Thortnton... I had him last year on one team.
