Report: NHL may skip '06 All-Star Game
TSN.ca Staff

According to a report in the East Valley Tribune, the National Hockey League could skip the 2006 NHL All-Star Game. NHL sources confirmed to the paper that, if the league sends players to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy, then the league would likely cancel the All-Star game.

The All-Star weekend is scheduled for February 4-5, while the Olympic Games are slated for February 10-26, making it difficult to incorporate both in a new schedule, especially when travel and practice time are taken into consideration.

A new collective bargaining agreement is reportedly nearing completion, and the league doesn't want to shut down twice during a season in which they will be trying to lure back fans after an acrimonious labour dispute.

Hoorah!

My thoughts exactly. Other than the skills competition, the whole "All-Star Weekend" is a waste to begin with. Besides, I'd rather watch them play in the Olympics.

They should scrap the All-Star weekend for those non-Olympic years too. It is such a joke.

I prefer some sort of meaningful international tourny. What say we bring back the Soviet Union? They were deadly... but they're cute now.

I say go back to the old system. One game between the Cup winners and All Stars from the rest of the league.

The All Star weekend is a corporate schmoozefest with absolutely no real value. Scrap it and if the companies get pissed, introduce an end of the season game like the NFL's Pro Bowl. The season is over, so who cares if Viagra is a sponser of Mark Messier.

Iactually enjoy watching NHL participants in the Olympics so I'm glad that's a go.

The All Star Game is really just a waste of time though IMO. I don't mind the skills-competition, however.

The skills competition is a new thing and I really haven't got ino it. I do like the oldtimers games when they are part of it.

I believe its great that they're gona skip it,....maybe in the future they can look into moving the all-star game to the end of the season after the cup finals?

The all-star game is...well...a joke although the goalies try harder lately compared to the old 16-6 score I remember there being once.
