once hockey gets back we need a goaltender who can stop a puck, defenseman who can check, a checking center (if holik checks), a few penalty killers, and a gm that's commited to rebuilding. oh and a few good scoring wingers.
that's about it.
Why not just switch to another team?

part of being a ranger fan is losing. if i can deal with the islander fans in the early 80's, and missing the playoffs 20 years in a row.... i can deal with this fine team.
Speak for yourself, being a Leaf fan I know all about losing..........:D

Woman with curved stick, heading my way, man she looks mean!! Please God!! Don't let her have PMS, not today, not this day PLEASE!!

I have been hearing (reading) that Gretzky is being courted by the Rangers to take over as President of the team, as Sather is being shown the door. Any truth? What are the papers in NYC saying? Are the source more credible than Al Strachan and Stan Fischler?

Source?
That would be sweet! - I might get to see Leetch back on broadway if that happened!
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I actually hope the Rangers can become a competitive team again soon, it's almost getting old when the Devils constantly beat them. :stir:

a good start would be a roster with more than 3 forwards on it...

I kinda hope the Rangers do turn it around soon simply because they are one of the teams who's success in turn helps the NHL's success. Like the Leafs and Habs in Canada, the Rangers are probably one of the few American based teams who can actually generate ratings for TV. The playoff ratings have been dropping in the States at an alarming pace and it is safe to say that the Rangers are the cause for that. Their inability to compete in the playoffs has cost the league it's most expensive market. So you can say that in order for the NHL to succeed in the States and draw fans is if the Rangers can start to win.

Sorry Matt I wasn't able to find the source on the Gretzky to the Rangers front office rumour.

That's a good point, and I made a thread about that at HF some time ago. Look at the publicity drummed up by the yankees/red sox rivalry. When is the last time the Rangers and Bruins even met in the playoffs?
NY is a big one, but don't forget Chicago's lack of success. I seem to remember that the 3 biggest markets in the US (NY, Chicago, LA) total some 50 million people... it would be great for the NHL to get some buzz back into the big markets.
Call me a fool :clown: But I actually have hopes for the Rangers to develop into a strong team with Holik wearing the "C" and Jagr scoring. It sure as hell ain't gonna happen over night... but I am looking forward to fresh faces on the Rangers, hungry kids that wanna play hard and win.
PS - back in 94 I was working in Manhattan during the Rangers playoff run. The city was buzzing like you'd never believe. Hockey was the main story... as it got down to the finals it seemed like 1/3 of every single person in Manhattan was wearing a Ranger jersey. Yeah there were tons of bandwagoners... but it was great press for the league.

I found the source, Stan Fischler quoting Steve Simmons
"Then there will be a minimum number, a floor, that teams must be over to keep teams from underspending. It sets a range, likely $10 million apart, and guarantees that every team will be within a reasonable payroll range. So we won't have a $90 million Rangers team lose to a $20 million Columbus Blue Jackets team. Now they can lose to the Blue Jackets with dignity."

What a coincidence you cited that article Grim! I was just about to start a new thread from that same article... but I'll do it here for continuity.
I don't know who Alan Hahn is but I sure hope he can read the future :pimp:
What would be the format (since there was no 2004-05 season)? Most importantly, who's going to get Sidney Crosby?
Here's why I chuckled: the format will be this -- the Rangers will amazingly win the lottery and draft Sidney Crosby. Actually, it's not that amazing. The widely-reported plan for the lottery this season is it will be weighed over a three-year scale. Since the Islanders made the playoffs in those three years, they'll have very little chance of winning. Since the Rangers didn't make the playoffs in that time, they'll have one of the best chances. And since Crosby is considered to be the next Great One, with a lucrative Reebok endorsement deal in his pocket, he almost has to be Broadway bound.
The league shouldn't apologize for it. No one should complain. The NHL needs some juice in New York and this kid, they say, has the juice. (Well, not THAT juice. Leave that stuff to the baseball players).

Besides what's with the 90 million talk. I would estimate that the Rangers current payroll (if there was no lockout) would be in the low - mid 40's. Everybody forgets they slashed payroll in half during the 03/04 season. They pay only half of Jagr's salary. The only bad contract they are stuck with is Holik's ;)
They gathered a lot of picks and prospects a year ago... The future is bright 8)
