View Full Version : Site moving

I will be moving this web site to a new physical location some time soon. My plan is to do it next weekend, June 18. Here's what is involved and what you can expect.

1) I turn off these forums so no new posts can be made, otherwise data will be lost by the time we get to the new place.

2) After that I estimate it will take me 2-3 hours to get all the data imported to the new location, and make sure everything seems to work.

3) Then I will change the domain name to point to the new physical location.

4) This is the part that affects you all. When domain names point to a new location, it typically takes 24 - 48 hours to "propogate" through the internet. That means for a while when you come to www.hockeystation.com... you'll get the message that we've moved (you're still being pointed to this current server) After the change propogates, you will be directed to the new location. Everything should be back to normal.

Propogation varies by where you live and who your ISP is etc. I find that the change usually goes through within less than 24 hours but your mileage may vary.

Some of you will be able to re-access the site within 6 hours... for others it may take a few days. I'll have my email listed on the message so you can e-mail me if you encounter problems.

This will definitely happen either next weekend or the following weekend.

Matt

Pizza is always good. I have no idea how it affects the site moving. But Yes, you should eat pizza. :pimp:

That's an old Ken Dodd joke, my dad has repeated many times. I thought you might like it. :)

It should not take more than a few days for anybody. I've never seen it take longer than that for a domain to propogate. I am going to attempt this on a Friday evening. That way the "down time" will be when most of us have better things to do anyway.

Before I do this I need to do a test run some time this week to make sure things will go smoothly.

I'd like to shoot for Friday the 17th, but I have a very hectic day on Friday... so it may wind up getting pushed to the following Friday. (or maybe I'll just do it Saturday morning).

I'm busy this weekend and next, so I won't be able to help you move.
But next time . . .I promise.

Funny, the reason I'm busy Friday is that I'm helping my parents move

OK I've been doing some test runs this weekend. We'll definitely be moving next weekend so expect the site to be unavailable for 24 - 48 hours as the domain name propogates. (roughly june 24-26)

For some strange reason, a portion of the private messages are not liking the move. I have no idea why. We might lose some of our private messages if I can't solve that. If that's an issue for you. I strongly suggest you download and save your private messages prior to friday the 24th.

Directions: click on "private messages" at the top right of the page. Then scroll to the bottom, you'll see 3 choices to download all of your private messages.

1) XML - open in web browser
2) CSV - open in MS Excel
3) Text - open in Notepad or basic editor

Just click one of the three links and save the file to your computer.

We be movin? on up, (la,la,la,la,la) to the eastside
And it looks like we?re gonna get some cream from the pie
Right, right

So,

have we moved yet?

have we moved yet?

Can we stop? I have to pee.

Slappy won't stop putting his feet on my side of the truck. Quit it, quit it. Matt, make him stop.

I'm hungry. :D

Actually it would be helpful if all members could review their PM's prior to Friday... Either download them to your machine as I described above, then empty your PM box.

OR simply delete the ones you do not really wish to keep. I have a hunch if enough of us do this the problem will go away

The more of us who can do this, the smoother the move will go. So if you get a chance, please "purge" your PM box.

Thanks very much, Matt

EDIT: Never mind... deleting PM's does not physically remove them from the Database. I'd have to do it by hand. On the bright side, deleting all my PM's directly in the databse will lighten it by approximately 50% :thumb:

Nah... we're moving to a more spacious home. (a home with more bandwidth than we should need for a long time to come). I could have put this off for probably a year or maybe even two... but it's a lot easier to move now while the database is still relatively small.

I'm looking ahead. The amount of bandwidth the site uses now in it's first few months with only 50 members is quite a bit more than I expected so soon. I could cut out stuff like quick reply and other add-ons.... but that would only prolong the inevitable. I found a reputable host that offers a lot of bandwidth for a reasonable price. So I opened an account just for Hockey Station.

The move will go smoothly, and once we're at the new place, everything will work perfectly as before. And the new home will be just as fast and reliable as this one.

*gulp* :(

OK - forget the move for now. I am extremely pissed. Let's leave it at that.

Some day in the future, you'll get the "moving" message. It will only take a day or two to go through.

The last thing I need after a tough week and a tough month is this crap

Stay tuned. In the meantime, have fun.

Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

No, the closing is taking longer than expected and some problems were found on the final walk-through with the realtor.

We are hard at work hammering out the closing now.

We're still movin' on up... any time now. :)

In retrospect, I approached this in a dumb way. I already had the entire site up and running over there. Instead of simply overwriting the database with fresh data... I dropped the whole thing with intention of starting over.

Now I'm having some technical issues and awaiting a response from their support team. Things work very much differently over there than I am accustomed to.

If it wasn't for that we'd be unpacking by now
