View Full Version : All star voting
I was checking out this page http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/allstar/voting
In the NL, Pujols has a big healthy lead over Lee for the 1B position. But based on these numbers I think Lee deserves the nod. What do you think?
Derrek Lee AB 217 - HR 17 - AVG .378 - RBI 52 - R 45 - SB 9
Albert Pujols AB 230 - HR 14 - AVG .330 - RBI 47 - R 43 - SB 4
---
On the AL side, it looks like Tino Martinez is cashing in on his home run per game tear last month, leading the voting despite a mere .239 AVG. (Teixeira gets my vote)
But I don't know how much you can trust these numbers when Nomar is leading for NL shortstop

And that is why the "fans" shouldn't vote.

Well they do get some picks "right" I think... but obviously many people simply pick on name recognition.
Remember the year that Brian Leetch got voted into the all star team even though he had been injured for literally the whole first half of the season?
Hey Leetch is like one of my favorite players but that was just ridiculous. How can you vote in a guy who hasn't even played. Even with the games Nomar did play, his average is like .150 or something
But he's Nomar! :D
Lee has outplayed Pujols.. sucks to be him, but I doubt he'll ever play over Pujols unless it's as a reserve.
It doesn't help the voting starts so early.. I guarentee most people didn't think Lee would still have the numbers he has right now a month ago.

They need to adopt a wieghted vote system, and include the votes of players, managers and coaches and writers, as well as fans. But I have said this before in other places. ;)

Lee should definitely start at first over Pujols. If he keeps up this pace he'll challenge for the triple crown this year. Fortunately the game is in Detroit this year, so there will be a DH and Lee will be in the starting lineup :thumb:

Carlos Beltran and Mike Piazza lead the outfield and catching positions for the National League, respectively. Still time to vote up the much deserving David Wright, who should definitely be a reserve. :)
The voting "fans" are at least giving credit where credit is due to the Baltimore Orioles. It looks like Brian Roberts and Miguel Tajada will be both starting in the middle infield for the American League.
However, Nomar Garciaparra leading the N.L. shortstop voting is nothing short of a farce. :curse:
I'm sorry I'm a Yankee fan, but Martinez on first is down right ridiculous. He still leads the vote at MLB.com.

Tino had a wicked hot streak where he hit about 10 homers over 12 games... and that's it! Other than that he's been somewhat un-noticeable and he doesn't even play every game. Teixeira deserves the spot hands down.

Derek Lee has taken a considerable drop since late-May/early-June. Just two HR's in his last 19 games. It's only recently that he's begun to pick up his play again. Lee had an unbelievable start, hitting 16 long balls in the months of May and April. Albert Pujols hasn't slumped, he's been consistent all season long and will eventually surpass Lee in every category. I don't think we have to debate this at all.
Carlos Beltran over Bobby Abreu? :conspire:

Plus Lee plays great in the field (he won a gold glove not long ago). I've been seeing it first hand this weekend as he visits Yankee stadium. They will certainly both be on the team.
Carlos Beltran over Bobby Abreu? :conspire:pure nonsense.
Teixeira finally overtook Tino for AL first base... people finally came to their senses

people finally came to their senses  True.
Lee closes gap on Pujols in NL voting (http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story.asp?id=129083).
The national league is still screwy.
Carlos Lee leads the entire MLB in RBI's but I guess that counts for nothing as he is in 14th place for NL outfielders. :conspire:
Rolen at 3rd? When he's not sidelined by injury he's batting .246 with 5 homers and a whooping 20 whole RBI's!
Ramirez, Glaus, Wright, Ensberg? All better choices.
