Star goaltender still intends to suit up for Senators next season
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, Ottawa Sun

DOMINIK HASEK is a lock to suit up for the Senators as soon as the NHL lockout finally ends. After fruitful discussions in recent weeks, optimism is growing that a new NHL collective bargaining agreement will be hammered out by July 1.

That would mean the 2005-06 season could start on time. And Hasek is back home in the Czech Republic preparing for that possibility. Ritch Winter, Hasek's Edmonton-based agent, told the Sun his client made it clear to him in recent conversations that he plans to fulfill his commitment to the Senators if the labour war ends by September.

There has been talk the Senators might have to go shopping for a goalie in the wake of the lost 2004-05 season. But No. 39 remains determined to play in Ottawa next season and has already started scheduling on-ice workouts.

"Dominik Hasek made a commitment to (Senators GM) John Muckler that he would play for the Senators if there's a new CBA in place and he plans to fulfill that commitment," said Winter. "His plans haven't changed."

The Senators plan to pick up the $2 million (all terms US) option on Hasek's contract after the lockout has officially ended. That means on top of his base salary, Hasek would have the opportunity to earn as much $6.1 million if he backstops the Senators to the Stanley Cup.

The question is: Will the year off help him after having surgery last April to repair a chronic groin problem?

"He hasn't played in two years, but I think he'll be fine because I know Dominik and I know that he has the desire to play," said Muckler from his Buffalo home. "You never lose your skills ... you lose your desire and Dominik Hasek has a lot to prove.

"I've spoken with Dominik and I know he wants to play. He was 100% when he was here during (AHL Binghamton's) training camp and he's feeling good. All you have to do is look at what this guy has done in the past and you know he's going to be fine. He wants to prove people wrong. He wants to show he can still be one of the top goalies in the league. He'll be fine."

Before being signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Senators last summer, Hasek had suited up for only 14 games in two years. The lockout lengthened the layoff even further.

"Will (the year off) help? I guess we'll find out next spring if the Senators are in the Stanley Cup and you're there covering the games and I'm there watching him play," said Winter. "That would mean the year off helped him. That's a question I can't answer right now, but he's in great shape."

Good or bad? If this is this case, let Emery take back up duties and let's see what we can get for Prus.

A extra year off will help his groin.
I question his timing and reactions and ability to read the play after sitting for so long.
All I can say is . . .hopefully, we'll get to pay Hasek $6.1 million.

I have mixed feelings. I thought the only place I would see him play as a Senator is NHL-2005. I get a feeling he's gunnng for one last multi-million dollar paycheck. Maybe we should go with youth.

If Hasek comes back he?ll be good and I?m confident of that. He may not be the Hasek who played for Buffalo but he will be the Hasek who won the cup with Detroit. My only concern is his health? Three scenarios would be
1 He gets injured within the first week (most likely against the leafs =]) and the season continues like that.
2 He gets injured right before the playoffs or in the first series and all the hype dies with that.
3 he stays healthy and we get a very good chance at the cup

Personally I?d like to see him play half the season with Prusek playing the other. Hasek could benefit Prusek because their similarities. IMO Prusek has it in him to be great. If that fails which it might very well do then bring in Emery and let Prusek back him up

If he wants the big score he'll need to bring us home the Cup. If he can do that he deserves the 6 million in bonuses.

I hate to offend the "Non-Dominator" fans here...But I have no respect for a whining, violent, slinky.....I would gladly choose David Aebischer over the cry baby any day of the week..... :thumb:

Well the Tom Barrasso experiment failed so miserably. But ... uh ... I guess. Nobody has called from The Ottawa Senators to ask me.

I'd rather take a pass on Hasek aswell, but how is he whiny? All I can do is laugh at those who bring up the incedent in Detroit and Cujo. It's a business! Hasek came back from retirement, which a player has every right to do, and played his way into the starters role. He wasn't as good as he was in Buffalo but he was still great and good enough to bring a Cup to Motown. The fans chanted "one more year, one more year!" when he decided to call it quits once again, so obviously he did somthing right. It's not Hasek's fault he did what he was supposed to do - play to the best of his ability - and managed to accomplish every NHL'er goal in winning the Stanley Cup. Nobody complaied when Lemieux came back and took the #1 center place in Pittsburgh from somebody else. Likewise for Micheal Jordan joinging the Wizards and often times pushing a former starter to the bench. "But these are legends" people will say. It's respectful, they've earned it, etc. Hasek may not have the best career, not by a long shot, but in his prime he's the best goalie the NHL has ever seen as far as I'm concerned. What more can he do?

violent,

- It was one incedent.
- That hasn't stoped other goalies from being successful, including Colorado hero Patrick Roy. Ron Hextall, Billy Smith, and Ed Belfour are some more names to add to the list. Maybe Emery someday, lol.

slinky.....

Whatever works. If he can flop his way to a Stanley Cup who wouldn't take him.

I would gladly choose David Aebischer over the cry baby any day of the week..... :thumb:

Please point out any incedent where Hasek has went crying to the media. Interestingly enough, Roy has done it multiple times. Demanding a trade from Montreal and quitting on team Canada when he wasn't guaranteed the starters role.

Again, I have some major concerns with Hasek and would rather us sign another FA/go with Emery and Prusek. But as long as he's our starter - and on an even bigger level, the best goalie I've ever seen who deserves some respect - I will defend him when I feel his critism is unwarranted. He hasn't even played a game for us and here come the bashers. I'm just skeptical. ;)

*Watch me kill this thread my big-ass response, it wasn't really warranted. :rollover:

I agree Man U and have always had a beef with the Detroit issue. He came back, he had the option with Detroit and the Wings exercised it knowing they would have a goalie problem then Hasek got injured. It?s part of the game and none of it was Haseks fault. In all honesty giving money back showed class on his part.
I know Hasek has had his issues but I think many of the stories are one sided, especially the ones coming out of Buffalo. In the end he?s still one of the greatest goaltenders ever deserves respect for it

I think that Hasek could indeed have a good season with the Sens, I just don't know if I would be placing my season in the hands of a goalie whose played a total of 14 games since the 01'-02' season. It may have given him time to rest his groin, but it's also given him more time to lose the edge he used to have. Although, the same could have been said of the Leafs when they signed Belfour, but that seemed to work out pretty well.

Luckily for us Hasek will not be the only goalie in that boat come September?
If Hasek still has it will come back, not right away but it will. Otherwise the Sens better be ready for plan B =]

Good Post, Maximum.
Most tenders did not play last year, so there will be rust all around.

I do not have any concerns about Hasek's desire. . . he feels he has something to prove.
Some small concerns about his health, but a two year rest is just what the doctor ordered, and he has been conditioning himself.
The biggie for me is the rust.
Hopefully, he can shake it real soon.
I don't imagine he will ever be back to Buffalo / Nagano form, but if he gets to Detroit form . . . it should be a good year.

Muckler announced yesterday when he signed on for three more years that Hasek will play next season if there is a season. I can't find an article on it but I did hear it on the radio.
Thoughts?
If he can still do it that's great but I can't help to be a little skeptical
I hope he does accomplish his goal of proving all-wrong
And launch his clothing line
