NHL tough guy Andrei Nazarov has been banned from Russia?s top professional hockey league for one year for assaulting a referee, the CBC channel reported on Monday.

Nazarov attacked the referee in a restaurant following his team?s playoff loss to Dynamo Moscow last month.

?Nazarov will not be allowed to play any professional hockey in Russia next season even if the NHL is still shut down,? league vice-president Vladimir Shalayev told the Russian newspaper Sovietsky Sport .

?If he wants to play hockey in Russia he will have to sign for a local water-pump team.?

Nazarov played for Avangard Omsk last season. Some of his teammates included New York Rangers superstar Jaromir Jagr and former Anaheim Mighty Ducks defenceman Oleg Tverdovsky.

Avangard Omsk?s most notable investor is Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who built Chelsea into an English soccer power.

Nazarov spent 11 seasons in the NHL. He played for San Jose Sharks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary Flames, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes, amassing 1,500 penalty minutes in 569 regular-season games.

He accumulated 179 penalty minutes in 39 games for Avangard.
