View Full Version : Sidney Hates the leaf

From today's Toronto Sun by Steve Simmons:
Leafs not high on Sid's List
"Sidney Crosby makes no secret he is a Montreal Canadiens fan. A lifelong fan. And if all the ping pong balls somehow bounce his way in an eventual NHL lottery to determine first pick for an eventual draft, Crosby would like nothing better than to play for the team he has grown up loving.
"That would be his dream," said Troy Crosby, his father, also a longtime Habs fan.
And what about the Leafs, we found ourselves asking?
"When you like Montreal, the one team you don't like is the blue and white," sais Crosby's dad. "He'd go to Toronto, but I can tell you, he wouldn't be happy about it."
Sounds to me like the message is Sidney wants no part of Laffland.
But, but why do Leafers continue to think they have the best chance at him signing with either those Marlies or Leafs?
I'm a leafer JR and I don't think that. We'll always have A chance but we have the odds that we have because of the better record over the last 3 years. We can dream all we like but I certainly don't think we'll win the first pick.
I hate to tell you guys... but they are apparently going to use a lottery system weighted over the past 3 active seasons.
The Rangers, missing the playoffs three years in a row stand a very good chance of winning this lottery. Probably among the best chances of any team.
Crosby to Broadway!
Perhaps the pain and ridicule of recent years will be a blessing in disguise.
This is hearsay... I could be wrong.
Kidding aside, and I don't mean this to sound arrogant or anything... but Crosby to Broadway would be hype, hype, hype and the loud mouth New York media would make a lot of noise about it. It could really be a boost for the NHL to get back on the map.
In addtion, the network execs in New York would be much more cognizant of Crosby and the NHL, if they were hearing the hype every day in their local sports media - as opposed to Crosby landing in Florida or Carolina. It could really have an impact on how quickly the NHL can recover.
Of course this would depend on how big of a splash Crosby makes when he hits the NHL. I know everybody hates New York, you don't have to remind me. But it could be great for the NHL in regards to U.S. fans and networks regaining interest, if Crosby lands in the big apple and the annoying media does what it does best. HYPE!

Late night, Rusty?

And seeing as I have read all of his stuff over the last 4 years or so, it sorta kinda gets old.
Getting hard to find new stuff hey LH?
Of course it is hard to find anything to "discuss" seeing as there is no hockey, but when you make your living in the past recycling is the name of the game.

If the balls don't drop the Leafs way, here's hoping the fall for the Rangers

Yeah I heard that too. The Rangers will be one of I think it's eigth teams with 3 balls in the proposed lottery system. The rest will have either two or one balls.
I agree with you that Crosby landing in New York would probably be best for the league. If he gets off to a good start the hype machine will start to roll, and ESPN might even start showing his highlight reel goals on Sportscentre ;) Also, having Jagr on his right side will take some pressure off because teams won't be raping him constantly like they would if he landed in a place like Carolina.
I think there are 3 things the NHL really needs.
1) Crosby in Chicago or LA
2) Kessel in the other city
3) A Rangers/Bruins rivalry. The NHL should market the hell out of Ranger/Bruin games.. you have the biggest rivalary in NA, arguably the world between the Sox/Yanks, so why don't other sports try to play off of it and get those games to be huge for them as well?
Hey Mr Admin, you are off topic ;)
How am I off topic? This is a speculation on where crosby might wind up... quite on topic.
besides don't you have somewhere else to moderate?

LA yes, much bigger market than Chicago... Could rejuvanate NHL on the west coast. I would say Chicago is also a good choice... however thier stinking owner has alienated and driven away fans to the point where the once proud hockey city doesn't give a crap about the hawks.
(point taken though, maybe Crosby could turn that around.)
#3 is a good point... unfortunately, the Rangers and Bruins don't play in the same division, and indeed haven't met in the playoffs since 1972!
They could realign the divisions... but do you really want to lose the Montreal / Boston rivalry?
The Rangers can't switch divisions because it would be stupid not to have them in the same division as the Isles / Devs / Flyers.
I too have thought about pushing the Bruins / Rangers rivalry but it's just not there any more.

Fully agree on Wirtz. He'll die soon though :coffee: . I tihnk a combination of Ruutu and Crosby could bring the city back though. All in all, the last time the NHL was really successful, these 3 franchises were all very good. The Rags had Messier & Co, LA had Gretzky and Chicago had Roenick, Amonte and Belfour.
I hate divisional play, but won't get too into that..
I think you could get away with switching Buffalo and New York. You'd still get 4 games against the Devils/Isles/Flyers, and if the NHL went about it right those extra 2 against Boston could end up being huge.
Boston unfortunately is so caught up in the bosox and patriots that the bruins only do about 80% attendance. When I was a kid in the 70's and my father took me to Boston garden it was a ZOO!
The bruins have really faded from focus of probably the best most knowledgable hockey city in the US. It's sad.
Don't get me wrong, they still get their coverage in the papers... more so than just about any other city... but it ain't what it used to be.

You can say the same for the Blackhawks, Hull, Magnusson, Makita and Tony O, used to be gods in Chitown on a scale of an Ernie Banks a Dick Butkis, Mike Ditka or Fergie Jenkins. Now they are a blip. Yet somewhow Jeremey Jacobs a Bill Wirtz of this world are tough minded owners who don't give in to salary demands of whiny players and are owners to be emulated? It strikes me as pathetic we are discussing how to raise the profile of the NHL in established traditional US markets.

Personally, I'd love to see Sid in a Habs uniform. Good canadian kid makes it big and plays for most decorated canadian hockey team. I like the sound of that. Or the Sens could draft him and deal him to Edmonton for Smyth. :thumb:

Crosby has had phenominal success in every league he has played in, and I wish him nothing but continued success. However I also remember many poster on other boards getting very excited over Marc-Andre Fleury a couple of seasons ago, and the over the years the list of never lived up to the hype can't miss Juniors who never made it big in the NHL has grown and will continue to grow. There is the travel, playing against men, the clutch and grab trap style that we have seen. There will be the media pressure as well as the fact he will be hyped as a saviour of which ever franchise lands him as well as the NHL itself. Good luck Syd.

You are probably right in many occasions about LH's material, but this story is new and was reported in the Toronto Sun by Steve Simmons...

Yeah it is pathetic and the guys standing in the way most of all are the guys who own the teams.
A cup victory could rejuvenate the NHL in either Chicago or Boston. But I don't think I can stomach Boston winning yet another sports championship.
Let's go Blackhawks... hopefully the new NHL will force Wirtz to spend on his team and for God sake's if Bettman and the other owners have any kind of power to do so... they should PROHIBIT Wirtz from blacking out games locally.
I just hope Crosby winds up in...
a) a city he where wants to play
b) a city where his presence can help rejuvenate the league
c) a good "hockey city".
For selfish reasons, I hope he lands on the east coast so I can watch him play more often :)

I can completely appreciate where you guys are coming from. He's Canadian, a life-time Habs fan... it would be storybook for him to land on the Habs and return that storied franchise to glory. And it would keep him in Canada, which I know is important to many Canadians.
That said, Crosby to Montreal does not rejuvinate the league as far as U.S. markets go. He'll still get his press but he won't get as much attention in the states as he would in NY / Chicago / L.A. / Philly / Detroit / Boston.
I don't say that in any sort of negative way. It's just that the U.S. networks won't take as much notice if Crosby is in Montreal. And unfortunately that's where the money is. That's that path to increased revenue for a league that is currently devestated and trying to regain momentum in the positive direction. (once a CBA is signed).
As a hockey fan, I'd be perfectly happy to see Crosby live out his dream playing for the Habs. From a business perspective for the league however... Montreal is not a city that "needs to be rejuvinated" when it comes to NHL hockey. Neither is Toronto.

Hockey in Montreal is not what it used to be. Not since Les Nordiques left Quebec and Roy left Montreal. Some would say long before that. The Montreal/Toronto rivalry has been mostly non-existent since the Habs became... sorry... mediocre. I'd say some rejuvination is exactly what Montreal needs. I miss going to The Forum to watch games. Crosby as a NYR would be good for US hockey, but is it enough? Crosby could still be Alexandre Daigle II. After the IIHF series, I now know what I'm missing with a star like Rick Nash in exile in Columbus. Crosby would be equally as obscure in Nashville or Atlanta. The NHL is a %$#@*&^ mess.

No I agree. Crosby landing in Carolina or Nashville or Colombus would be a complete disaster. All I'm saying is that the most high profile U.S. market he lands in... the better it will be for the NHL for publicity and might potentially expedite the NHL's return to profitability. That's a huge "if". Many including myself are guilty of assuming Crosby will be a smashing success on the NHL level... which of course remains to be seen.
Again as a fan, I would be happy to see him land in Montreal. I would watch a lot of Hab games to see him play.
But what the NHL has been after all along (forgetting for a moment that things have gone terribly wrong) is the U.S. network TV dollars along the lines of the other major sports. That's the only reason I think it would be good for Crosby to land in a large U.S. market (NY, LA, Chicago are the 3 biggest).
Maybe it's not possible for the NHL to ever gain as much acceptance (and $$$) in the U.S. as the other major sports. But a brand new economic landscape for the league, and a young superstar budding in a large market with lots of press would be a very good start.
In the print edition of yesterday's Toronto Sun, the captain of Sidney Crosby was better than the short article itself. There were two pictures of Crosby next to each other, one with a Oceanic jersey on, the other with a Team Canada jersey. The caption reads - "SIDNEY CROSBY has no problem wearing the blue and white of the Rimouski Oceanic or the maple leaf of Team Canada. But put the two together on one jersey and the lifelong Canadiens fan would not like it." :D

It probably would be better off for Crosby to go somewhere else other than Toronto, until they get new ownership anyway. Who knows what they'd make Crosby do to get a buck.

I totally agree with you. Gretzky did more for the NHL (as far as TV contracts and ratings) after he was traded to L.A. But if Crosby was to play somewhere in Canada, it wouldn't be the end of the NHL by any means. What the league really needs is to fix a product that has seen its talent pool diluted to a point where there are too many teams in Cities who can't care less. But that's a whole different topic on its own! 8)

I agree that reason alone keeps the Coyotes safe for the time being. Now if Gretzky ends his involvement with them somewhere down the line then they have alot to be worried about down there.

They just built a new arena out in Glendale too. I doubt that the NHL would be so cruel to rip them out of the ARZ, right after they got enough money together to build the place.
That'd be nice, but I don't see Phoenix going just because Gretzky is involved.
But not after Bettman gets fired and Gretzky becomes the next commish! :D

As long as Crosby doesn't pull a "Lindros" and refuse to sign/play with the team that drafts him, I'll be happy to see him on any team except the rotten Avs, or the Leafs, Stars, Flames, or Oilers.
