View Full Version : Let's Reminisce

Leave it to the leaf to be victims of what was to be the biggest massacre of the 2004 playoffs.

It was Sunday, May 2, 2004 that the Philadelphia Flyers put a severe 7-2 beating on the hapless leaf. Eddie let in six goals on just 18 shots before being mercifully pulled from the game. The ever dependable Trevor the backup Kidd let in the seventh. No other team was scored upon seven times in one game in the entire 2004 playoffs. Stupid leaf.

Flyer captain Keith Primeau recorded a hat trick and added one assist. Meanwhile, leaf captain, the Big Sardine was held pointless and was a minus-4. Some leader, eh?

And what a dreadful afternoon it was for the tandem of leaf leech, Leetch and Bryan McCabe who were a minus-4 and a minus-5 respectively. Did somebody forget to remind them that this was a pivotal playoff game?

In total, the leaf only registered 11 shots on goal that day in frightful leaf history. This all happened despite the fact that Wade Belak was playing.

Have any precious memories from that Sunday afternoon that you'd like to share? You're not a leaf fan are you, loser? :curse:

OK LH, I suggest you review the rules that you agreed to when joining this web site. Abusing fellow members is strictly prohibited. I tried to make that clear to you in my PM. That includes abusing fans of a team as a group.

Your confrontational style is not wanted here. Consider this your last warning.

Tick tock..... LH I knew it was just a matter of time but only a few days into your visit!! Isn't there a way you can berate me without the name calling...I'd sure miss you.

Anywho, as for the meat of your post. Every team at one time has had an embarrasing game in the playoffs. And you are right that game was probably one of the worst I've ever seen and that day I was embarrased to be a Leaf fan, but a leaf fan I remain.

Btw after all this time I've yet to discover your favorite team.....I guess I'll see you on the band waggon one day when the Leafs finally win the cup.

I know it's going to sound "homerish" of me, but that game pissed me off for another reason then the Leafs getting smoked.

That game was the one and only afternoon game that the Leafs played all year, every other game was at either 7:00 or later, whereas the Flyers had several afternoon games played to appease ABC's ridiculous Saturday afternoon hockey telecasts. I know it may have not made that big of a difference, but I mean it is tough to have a team play all of it's games at night and develop a routine only to have the rules thrown out the window in probably the most pivotal game of the year. Either way I do hope that when hockey is brought back, the schedule makers will try to scrap the whole afternoon game idea because it is a very awkward time to watch hockey let alone play it. Put it back to nightime where ratings will be up and everyone will be at an even level.

Sorry Insider but I don't buy the afternoon game thing. I can remember many memorable playoff games on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, the 68 Habs Cup victory over the Blues, the 70 Bruins and Bobby Orr airborne over the Blues again, the 74 Flyers over the Bruins, the 81 Islanders over the Flyers. The Canucks when they are on an east coast road trip play all of thier games in the afternoon according to thier body clocks due to the time zone difference. If a team can't get up for a major game both physically and mentally blame the coaching and conditioning not the time the game starts.

I understand the thinking behind that, but the Canucks go on an east coast trip many times a year and are accustomed to a 7:00 start or an "Afternoon" game. This is understandable, but the NHL accomodates a Western team in the Stanley Cup Final by having all games start at 8:00, an hour late for the east team, 2 hours early for the West team. My point is not, the Leafs lost because the game started in the afternoon, my point is, that even though in the past the NHL went on an afternoon sked(like the great examples you provided) but in today's ratings hungry media with sponsors relying heavily on the big numbers to advertise their products and the fact that all teams should be at an even playing field it is beneficial to the league that all games be played at viewer friendly times, and much like a top TV show like CSI, a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday afternoon game when the weather outside is decent is a very tough draw for ratings. Look, I am not trying to defend a terrible loss by the Leafs, I am just saying from a marketing standpoint it is a much better idea to have a prime time start for games to draw the most ratings as possible. I will add though that I just seem to be irked that it is the one and only afternoon game the team played all year, that's it, I am not using it as an excuse.

And so shall we.................

hatred, don't get me wrong here but as long as you keep it between the pipes, no problem, I thought we had you under control over at HF, but you went and deep sixed yourself. I hope you do not do the same here!

I do get a good laugh out of your stuff, but maybe you should try the same schtick with say the Sens, Rangers or some other team, lets see how good you are at directing your onsluaght after another team.

Or are you a one trick pony?

Correct, I focus upon a national disaster, the stupid leaf, while others discuss lesser issues.

Believe me, the NHL would be better off without the scandals surrounding the leaf of Toronto.

I think that they have much bigger fish to fry hatred, seeing as there is NO NHL hockey the least of their worries is the most profitable hockey franchise around......

You're too old to be converted. It's the children we have to look out for.

God knows how unsafe young boys were when attending a leaf game in the past. Please read "Gardens of Shame" by Cathy Vine & Paul Challen. It will make your leafer stomach turn, especially if you have kids like me.

I'd like to know where the NHL would be, or hockey in Canada would be without the Maple Leafs. The biggest money maker in Canada for the NHL, possibly in the whole league, is certainly worth whatever petty scandals you describe.

My kid already has the fever................Big mistake. You should really let the kid cheer for Alberta's decent franchise - the Edmonton Oilers. You know, the team with an actual minor league system.

You mean the team that hasn't made the playoffs in how long, even though they supposedly have a never ending stock of "up and coming talent"????

Actually I cheer more for Calgary then I do for Edmonchuck......

Rusty

I know.

But I don't want it to appear I am a band wagon fan, that's just not me.

I like all of the Canadian teams for the most part, well okay I cannot stand Vancouver but that seed was planted many many years ago.

Actually I prefer the original six teams.

Contrary to some peoples opinions a Leaf fan can be a closet fan of other teams.

When you get right down to it, I am a fan of the game.
