View Full Version : The Not So Glorious leaf.

The more I delve into hockey history, the more I have come to realize that the leaf was never that great at all, EVER.
They won the Cup (as the Toronto Arenas) in the NHL's inaugural season in 1918 but by the end of that year there were only 3 teams in the league. So big deal. Same with 1922. There were only four NHL teams competing for the Cup when the Toronto St. Pats won. For most other seasons of the 1920's, Toronto missed the playoffs entirely.
The leaf had a decent team during the 30's getting to the Finals several times but came out of the decade with only one Cup to show from 1932. Not that great considering the league was shrinking due to the Great Depression.
The leaf won five Cups during the forties when rosters were depleted by enlisted men at war. The NHL almost closed down completely. Teams like the Rangers and Bruins were hardest hit. It must have been easy to win the Cup when there was virtually no competition.
Only one Cup to show for the entire 1950's, that being in 1951. For the rest of that decade the leaf was of their usual mediocre brand.
Yes, they won four Cups in the 1960's but never when there was any more than six teams in the league. A couple of those may have been due to the good fortune of playing over poor ice conditions in places like Chicago where faster better teams like the Black Hawks were slowed to a crawl. Besides, the more impressive Montreal Canadiens won five Cups in the '60's.
Forget about the '70's. The leaf only won one best-of-seven playoff series in the entire decade.
In the 80's, the leaf was the laughing stock of the NHL, finishing with a losing record for 10 consecutive seasons.
They missed the playoffs four times during the 1990's and even at their brief peek, never made the Finals.
Please don't ever let a dumb, know-nothing leafer tell you of days of glory. It never was that glorious.
:D Welcome to hockeystation. Let the count-down begin.
*LOL*
He's here? Oh, glorious! This place just keeps getting better.

Rusty looks nervous. He loves you... but is frightened of you. Be good now. :]
Actually that steely glare of Dale Earnhardt is a pretty good represntation of me right now.
Not scared, just preparing for the onslaught.
You know LH and I have a very good quasi-friendship going back a few years now, I get a good laugh out of a lot of what he has to post, but I draw the line at the personal attack of us so-called "Leafers"
It was you? Now all along I had my money on blue.

LH you ol' dog... Good to see you. Still your old delusional self I see. Try to stick around a little longer this time... I mean, eventually you have to run out of material. =]
The Leafs are an unlimited source of material, year in, year out... :stir: :D

Ain't it true.
I think I might have to grab a few trade suggestions and show them to our newest member, eh Jonny? :D

His material is far above anyone else that hates the leafs. Its chalk full of information, good and bad, and FUNNY!! Its posters like LH that make being a Leaf Fan worthwhile. JR tried his best but sadly he ran out of good things to say ;) LH, I hope you spent a lot of your downtime making and taking notes because without hockey there hasn't been much to smile about. Please make me laugh :)

Much the same as les Habitants the last 10-12 years.
As well PDO the Oilers have provided their fair share of cannon fodder for much longer.

This might help Leafhatred explain many of the problems
Introduction
Canada, also known as Toronto, is situated somewhere north of California, and a state whithin the United States of Canada But who cares? Note: New research has managed to narrow it down to not only north of California, but also up.
Toronto (also known as the Worst City Ever) is the worst city in the world, and thus far the only city to have a Sexually Transmitted Disease derived from an animal source named after it, i.e. Hogtown for this pig-to-human zoonotic transmission of Syphillis.
Toronto, both the country and the city, have a large population consisting mostly of human people. In fact, a recent study showed that many many many people ("just billions and billions!" according to the research staff) live in Toronto, and not one of them will participate in a telemarketing survey carried out by seven year olds. Also, it was observed that "hardly any" of the Toronto residents spoke any English, and that over half of them laugh at fake farts, burps, and foreigners pronouncing "Traw-na", "Two-ront-toe".
Others have noted Toronto's urban sprawl as a spreading ink stain engulfing the northern banks of Lake Ontario on a map of the region.

~Rise from the Dead, Thread~
SN tonight had a major story on the possibility of Tie not coming back to the Leafs when the new CBA is finalized. News Flash Sportsnet, who friggen cares!
- Let's see, Unrestricted free-agents Peter Forsberg, Nikolai Khabibulin, Markus Naslund, Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Gonchar, Mike Modano, Scott Niedermayer, Brian Leetch, all possibly available & attainable, but let's get Tie signed first!
Then they proceded to put a mic up to this goomba's mouth and ask for his feelings on the lockout and rule changes -
- "I think they're stupid, and some are pretty dumb. I mean, they didnt even ask me so I don't know but I definatly am against them"
-Thanks Tie! Back to you Jody...

The Leafs have what 82 Million locked in with with the Seniors Circiut do they not? It might be a little tight for the Big Spenders. I'm anxious to see how Mis-Management Inc (TML) does with the new CBA. Your thoughts?

But why do you ask others thoughts when your position on the matter is so clear and unyielding? :D

Its called a rebuilding phase, all teams go through them once in a while. This rebuilding phase was going to happen whether this lockout happened or not.

Don't worry about him NJ... he's just pissed off because he just found out that the whole CBA was just an elaborate hoax to fool the boring a$$ Sens and their fans into thinking that there was no season... haven't had the heart yet to tell him what the big parade down Yonge Street this afternoon is for. =]

So it's true?
The Leafs parcipated in the 'Walk for Herpes Parade on Young Street? I heard that someone saw them there.. +]

The jury is out. JFJ/the new scouting department having been around long enough to proclaim any of their drafts a success/failure. Trade-wise the Leafs has been stinking as bad as ever with the Leetch and Francis deals for two, but with a different roster comes different types of wants so......
Its called a rebuilding phase, all teams go through them once in a while. This rebuilding phase was going to happen whether this lockout happened or not.
Many teams with good scouting never have to go through a re-building phase. Or at least not for a long, long time. Detroit and New jersey are/will be two great examples. As will my Sens provided we continue our success at the draft table and asset management at such a high-level. I expect a slow, progressive changing of the guard baby! No destroy and rebuild for us! We won't always be Cup contenders, but even when losing some vets we'll probably in the mix fighting for a final playoff spot.
