Echo Charlio. Too bad for Cherepanov, his family, and all hockey fans everywhere to lose a prospect this young.

From what I have heard coming out since his death it sounds like the medical preparedness of the Russians is at best, far below sub-standard.

You know, I am hearing all this noise too. I think it's total nonsense and it's like every time the Western media can take a shot at Russia they do. When I was playing midget back in the day there was nothing but a plywood stretcher hanging in the corner and someone's mom who was a nurse (if you were lucky). All I am getting at is sometimes, when it's your time.....it's your time no matter how many defibrillator's are hanging from the wall in the corner of the rink. Matter of fact, the rink I JUST had a skate at doesn't have one ( I think I should check into it actually) This was this kids time to go and with all the mystery surrounding this I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was jacked up on blow so far he heart exploded. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Russia's going through a sort of Wild west of their culture right now. Money, power, underworld and this current attempt at keeping their talent at home. I mean many of these guys are being paid in cash! Million dollar contracts in cold hard cash....Me's a thinking it would be pretty hard being 19 in mother Russia making huge dough in a mob controlled league and not lose your head.
Just my thoughts on the matter

From what I understand there was no defibrillator or Ambulance at the scene. Poor showing for a league that is supposed to be professional.
This isn't your neighbourhood rink we are talking about. These are professional games being played by professional players. There should be a minimum level of precaution taken.
I doubt he was on Coke but I would not doubt for a minute if someone reported that he had consumed 1 or more Energy drinks before or during the game as many players do.

Half your argument is that he was meant to die and the other half suggests he was all coked up and it's own fault? How would you like it if someone said something like that about Luc Bourdon's death? A little class man....

:slant:  Just cause someone has passed doesn't mean it can't be spoken about....and comparing this to Luc is a tad premature. Luc was an accident. This.....we need a coroner and some honesty before we know where we stand. That's all I was saying, I never said he WAS high, I said it wouldn't surprise me. So before you go getting all bigger then me READ and THINK.
ahem....A little class eh man....

Good points. And again, I am not saying he DID anything from Energy drinks to illicit drugs, I am saying it wouldn't catch me surprised. And until the Russians actually figure out who is the authority there.....we're not going to get much. I suspect by weeks end they will feed us some sort of final genetic default that went undetected blah blah blah. I believe from the reports I've seen we're on condition number two so far  Not sure if they're just guessing or they just don't really want to get into with the western media....
I must ask, why do you doubt he could be on an illegal drug? It happens here so why wouldn't it happen in a place where currently Oil and drugs are pretty much running the entire economy. It actually is a real possibility. Russia's a curious place these days. Think it over.
I find the whole thing very curious that's all....

Mainly stigma. Doing drugs like coke and speed are frowned upon, but a few energy drinks or 3 or 4 cups of coffee are perfectly acceptable.

Well after an accident like this, the NHL has yet another reason to show players why they have the league to play in and not the Russians. I don't want to start any conspiracy, but Badcock is right. Russia like the Wild Wild West right now, and from personal experience, you can have a hell of a time if you go there.
Whatever the cause of his death, it is a great shame. As a Ranger fan it is particularly sad. But for his parents and relitives it must be devistating.

I agree. I am not saying that Cheepanov would have been saved if he had been playing in the NHL, but after hearing of the conditions over there, I am sure Jiri Fischer would be dead if he had collapsed in Russia.
I hope the League and all upper levels of hockey adopt the more stringent testing that is being discussed in the wake of this incident. I heard of another kid I think it was Matt Carle's younger brother who was lucky enough to have his heart condition diagnosed before something like this happened. His problem is similar to Cherepanov's but not as severe.

Well there we have it. He was on performance enhancing drugs.

Truly sad to see a kid essentially take his own life. Kids need to hear and read this story. They need to know that this is not the road to take, they can be winners without doing these things. I am not saying he should be made into a villain but more the victim of a system and it's demands. How many Canadian kids are enhancing themselves? USA? and so on. It begs the question.
May he and all who loved him rest....
