Hot dog - Ottawa ties it! Their star, Mark Mancari, finishes off a beauty of a two-on-one.

Their goalie has been spectacular and allowed them to remain in the game. Great game through one and a half periods.

Wow, this is fun again. The game tying goal looked like it was clean to me.

After mentioning that I couldn't remember an overtime game in recent memory, well I'm not going to forget how round robin overtime works now.

When Ottawa tied the game, both teams' intensity just went up exponentially. Should be a great extra period(s). The 67s will have to be more careful defensively, making sure they don't give Kelowna too many opportunities in the 'hot zone.'

67's ask: Why not us?

Not interested in tie-breaker
By BARRE CAMPBELL -- Ottawa Sun

LONDON -- With world-class goaltending from Danny Battochio, it's no wonder the 67's are talking about bursting through the front door at the Memorial Cup. "That was one of the best performances ever by a goaltender -- never mind just Ottawa," 67's coach Brian Kilrea said yesterday about Battochio's stunning and record-breaking 62-save effort in Sunday's 3-2 double-OT win over the Kelowna Rockets in the longest game in tournament history.

The 67's were viewed as the event's back-door team after a loss in the OHL final to the host Knights. That's no longer the case. And the 67's now have a swagger, and they won't be content with ending the round-robin with a spot in Friday's tie-breaker -- of which they are now assured following Kelowna's 4-2 loss last night to the Knights -- for a playoff spot. Their goal -- and they all feel it's attainable -- is to finish on top of the round-robin standings and get a bye into Sunday's final.

That, of course, would require a win tonight against Sidney Crosby and the Rimouski Oceanic, and Thursday against the Knights. "I think everybody is going for that," said Battochio, who looked no worse for wear yesterday about 15 hours after Ottawa's dramatic win. "Obviously, that's what we want to do. We've been going for that right from the start. But we need to do what we can one game at a time, and we'll see what happens."

The 67's shocked pretty much everybody at the tournament -- except themselves -- when defenceman Brad Staubitz scored at 15:41 of the second overtime to give Ottawa the win over the WHL champs. "We knew coming in that everyone was going to underestimate us, and we knew that we had the talent to come in and win hockey games," said Ottawa winger Mark Mancari, who scored a short-handed goal during Sunday's win.

"If we go out and play our game, we could possibly win all three games," he said. "We're just going to take it one game at a time, and that's the best thing we can do right now." The first task is stopping Crosby, the 17-year-old phenom prospect, who scored 66 goals and had 168 points in 62 regular-season games. "It should be pretty exciting," Battochio said about facing Crosby. "There are a lot of people out there who think he's the best and it's going to be a good memory for myself playing against the best player in the world at his age.

"I know he's good and we're going to be watching out for him, but he's got linemates too that can put the puck in the net." Those linemates, Dany Roussin and Marc-Antoine Pouliot, had 54 and 45 goals, respectively, in the regular season. Ottawa will be the visiting team in tonight's game, which means Rimouski will have last change, making it difficult for Kilrea to have who he wants on the ice against the Oceanic's top line.

The Oceanic will be looking to bounce back from a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Knights in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday. Rimouski had London on the ropes, leading 3-1 after the first period, but allowed the Knights to get back into the game before Ottawa native Marc Methot scored the winner in overtime. "We will be more organized on the ice. The stress won't be there this time around," said Rimouski coach Doris Labonte.

Crosby said his team doesn't think tonight's game will be easy. "You can't look past Ottawa," he said. "They have a great team. If you get caught looking past them, they are going to burn you and beat you." And the Oceanic, like the 67's facing Crosby, are looking forward to playing against Battochio, the tournament's newest star. "I had heard he was good, and now after seeing him, I know he is really good," said Labonte. "But don't forget that there are other good players on that team."

Battochio's performance on Sunday impressed Crosby, who was on hand for the game. "He looks like someone who does not give up, and that is a good trait in a goalie, someone who has second effort and does not give up on plays," said Crosby.

67's looking to lay beating on Crosby
By CHRIS STEVENSON -- Ottawa Sun

The word is out here at the Memorial Cup. If you want to beat Sidney Crosby and the Oceanic, beat 'em up. The Knights were very physical with Crosby in their win Saturday, putting gritty winger Brandon Prust on him every chance they got. Tonight, the 67's get what will be for most of them their first live look at the most exciting junior prospect since Eric Lindros in 1990.

"(Crosby) looked like he tried to play that game with them and it put him off his game," said an NHL scout. "He had a great start, but he pretty much disappeared in the second half of the game. He ran into (Knights defenceman Marc) Methot three times and he didn't look like he had anything left in the tank after that. I think (the Knights) wore him down."

SHUT DOWN BY PRUST

Prust stuck close to Crosby. "Prustie was on him all night ... Prustie talks a lot, jabs a lot and he goes in-your-face checking," said linemate Drew Larman. 67's coach and GM Brian Kilrea won't have the benefit of last change tonight as Ottawa has been designated the visitors. The closest thing the 67's have to Prust is Brad Bonello and he's giving up a lot in the size department (three inches and 35 lbs.) to Prust. Bonello agreed a physical approach is the way to go.

"Once you start looking at the puck or curling away from the puck, he can make you look silly," said Bonello. "You have to play the body and match his speed with him. Try and stay as close as possible to him." Since the 67's don't have a designated checking line, Kilrea said the priority tonight will be getting the right defencemen on the ice when Crosby is out there. As a group, the 67's blueliners had an awful night against Kelowna on Sunday, so they will have to upgrade their games.

Crosby has been playing right wing since returning from the world juniors, so the 67's left defencemen, starting with Will Colbert, will be on the spot. "I can't wait. I've seen him on TV and heard about him for two years. I finally got to see him live on Saturday. To get a chance to match up against him (tonight), I'm going to enjoy it. It'll be fun," said Colbert. "It's a tough task. I'm just going to try and do my best and hopefully I don't wind up minus-5."

"We'll roll four lines and they'll have the opportunity to use him at their leisure," said Kilrea. "You have to know where you can gamble and where you can't and give him the respect he deserves."

McKenzie did not diss 67's
TSN analyst says he hasn't spoken to anyone about Ottawa's Cup chances
By CHRIS STEVENSON -- Ottawa Sun

LONDON -- One of the rallying cries for the underdog 67's at the Memorial Cup is proving their naysayers wrong. It's the us-against-the-world mind-set and it's been used to good effect in the past. One of the players' targets for a presumed slight has been TSN's Bob McKenzie, the best-informed hockey journalist in the business.

The Ottawa players have mentioned in interviews a couple of times McKenzie predicted they wouldn't win a game at the Memorial Cup. Players get motivation where ever they can find it, but the only problem here is McKenzie hasn't dissed the 67's.

Not a negative word. Not even a word. Not about the 67's or even the Memorial Cup, for that matter. "I haven't said one word about the 67's to anybody," said McKenzie last night. "I never said a word on TSN, I haven't said a word on radio and I haven't written anything for the Internet. "If somebody is saying I said something about the 67's, they have to prove it. I haven't said word one. Somebody should tell them I don't cover junior hockey anymore. I've only been talking about the (NHL) lockout."

After the 67's beat the Kelowna Rockets Sunday night, 67's forward Brad Bonello said: "After hearing Bob McKenzie say we wouldn't win a game at the Memorial Cup, we wanted to stick it to him a bit." Bonello said last night he hadn't heard McKenzie's comments himself, but that players were talking about them in the dressing room. "There's no hard feelings toward Bob," said Bonello. "We were just using it as a source of motivation."

HEAR AND THERE: The Hunter brothers have done an outstanding job building the Knights into a heavyweight both on and off the ice. Don't let "the farmers from Petrolia" label fool you. They're pretty sharp guys. They've accumulated 760 hectares of farmland. That might be even more impressive if I knew how much a hectare was. They've also grown the Knights into a thriving business. "We've always been involved in something we know about. We know hockey and we know farming," said Dale Hunter. And that Overdrive blades are dangerous, apparently ... On hand here: Tyler Stewart of the Bare Naked Ladies, playing some charity hockey ... Also making Allison Graham's People at the Memorial Cup column in the London Free Press is Ottawa's own John Stanton. The L.A. Kings scout was spotted out for dinner and is now a bona-fide celeb. Hope he doesn't forget the little people.

REVELATIONS: The 67's were exhausted after winning the longest game in Memorial Cup history Sunday. "I had a bite to eat and I didn't last long. As soon as my head hit my pillow, I was out," said Bonello ... Dale Hunter's bad driving is responsible for Brandon Prust being with the Knights. Hunter drove his golf ball into another fairway being played by Prust's dad, Kevin. The elder Prust introduced himself to Hunter. Prust hadn't been drafted and Hunter understood he was going the U.S. scholarship route. When told by Kevin Prust that might not be the case, Hunter invited him to camp. Prust was cut that first year, but has been there since.

SPECULATIONS: Brian Kilrea didn't use his fourth line in the first OT Sunday, but did put them out there in the second. "It was their speed and freshness that got the penalty that gave us the winning goal," said Kilrea. Kelowna's Blake Comeau was sent off at the 14-minute mark for high-sticking Arron Alphonso and at 15:41, Brad Staubitz ended it.

JUST WONDERING: How much did playing 95 minutes of hockey 22 hours before last night's game affect the Rockets? They scored 39 seconds into the game and had outshot the Knights 7-0 five minutes into the game ... Is there anything sweeter than returning to the scene of one of your greatest victories? Sportsnet's Chris Simpson is back where she was crowned Miss Teen London, probably no more than a couple of years ago, I'd guess.

LEMME SAY THIS ABOUT THAT: When asked to evaluate the play of G Danny Battochio, 67's goaltending coach Tom Dempsey said: "Awesome. Outstanding. He's right on top of his game." Dempsey is hoping Battochio's play on this stage will get him at least a tryout with the pros. "Everything he's got, he deserves, all the rave reviews. I just hope he gets a shot." There has to be an NHL team out there willing to use a pick on Battochio. They've wasted them on much longer shots (remember Craig Hillier?) ... Hey, by the way, the Senators are going to need a goaltender in the near future.

PARTING SHOT: Hey, who's that over at the bar in local watering hole Joe Kool's? It's the mayor of London, Anne Marie DeCicco. "Welcome, welcome," she said when she found out we were from Ottawa. Can't imagine Bob Chiarelli, at, say, Stout Bros., doing the same thing ... You'd think Her Honour could do something about getting a beer after last call, maybe flash her chains of office. They've got to be good for something, huh?

Well the Rockets gave it a good run. They didn't score timely goals when they needed them. I thought they did a could job containing Crosby this evening, but giving up a short handed goal was a back breaker. I don't balme Westbloom, considering he had very little experience at this level he acquited himself well. With Tyler Spurgeon and Blake Comeau back next year , the Rockets look solid for the 2005/06 season.

That's just the thing with a short tournament. With a bad start, things will continue to spiral out of control. It was a tough schedule losing in double overtime to Ottawa, then having to play the Knights right away. It's still a proud acomplishment for Kelowna to qualify for three consecutive Memorial Cup tournaments. Time will tell if they will be in Moncton for 2006.

This is a terrible way for Danny Battachio to end his tournament. He just Salo/Cloutier/Lalime-d a dump in by Crosby, who collects the hat trick. Batts couldn't catch the innocent flip of the puck from neutral ice and it end up in the top corner. "Whatever Crosby touches, turns to a goal."

Well, even though some fans would disagree, there will be a dream final between London and Rimouski. I think everyone wanted to see the unbeatable Knights take on Sidney Crosby's Oceanic simply because if there were two junior teams that made any kind of noise this year it's these two. Too bad for Danny B of the 67's he made some fantastic saves all tournament and then he lets in the floater, just a rough ending for him and the rest of the 67's.

Exactly.

It's horrible that Danny Batachio had to end the season that way, but the guy as far as I'm concerned was MVP of the entire tournament. All due respect to Ottawa, they had no business winning any games; this guy was unbelievable. I've never seen a goalie play out of his mind like this young man did, and I'm willing to go as far to say he's been more dominant than Crosby or Perry. He single handedly beat Kelowna, and if not for some bad luck he very may well have brought the 67's into the Memorial Cup final. The guy put on a clinic.

Here's hoping to a Rimouski win tomorrow with big games from Robbie Schremp and MA Pouliot!

#1 Knights V #2 Oceanic for the Memorial Cup

It's a dream match-up for hockey fans as the top two junior teams in the country, featuring some of the top players, battle for the Memorial Cup Sunday afternoon. Which is the better team? The year-long debate ends today.

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20050529/mem_36303.jpg (http://www.tsn.ca/chl/news_story.asp?id=126354)

The London Knights will face the Rimouski Oceanic in the Memorial Cup final today in a dream match-up for hockey fans.

The Knights opened the season with a 31-game unbeaten run, fnished as the number one ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League, and won the Ontario Hockey League championship.

The Oceanic finished as the number two team in the country, had a 35-game winning streak that carried into the playoffs, and they emerged as the champions of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Who is the better team? The debate will end Sunday afternoon.

London (3-0) has been the most balanced team in the tournament with lots of high-scoring but defensively responsible forwards, three effective workhorse defencemen to work with and steady, if unspectacular, goaltending.

The Knights haven't shown any sign of cracking under the pressure of playing in front of their home crowd. Corey Perry has a long reach and gifted hands, making him a dangerous player around the net.

The Knights have to stay out of the penalty box and will likely need whichever goaltender starts - Adam Dennis or Gerald Coleman - to come up with some game-savers.

Rimouski (3-1) boasts the top-scoring line of the tournament in Sidney Crosby, Dany Roussin and Marc-Antoine Pouliot and also the best power play of the tournament.

The Oceanic are accustomed to having the puck most of the time. Playing defence without it isn't this team's strength and the Oceanic have looked uncomfortable going into defensive mode to protect a lead. Rimouski defencemen occasionally look flustered getting the puck out of their own zone.

If Crosby's line gets shut down, others must contribute. Goaltender Cedrick Desjardins has been mostly dependable facing a high shot count, but has allowed the odd questionable goal.

Thoughts, comments, predictions?

Should be a great game, like their first matchup. It's the final most of us wanted to see, so here it is. Enjoy. I'm going to say 4-3 Rimouski.

My prediction:

Peter Lombardious will continue to do some of the worst play-by-play in history.

That and a great hockey game.

Here's hoping to Robbie and MA shining.

This one should be a barn burner. I think Rimouski to take it. The Crosby line will be big and the Tobin(newfie) line will bring in some good support.

I have doubts of that second part..

45 Points for Crosby & Co... 5 for the rest of the team.

At the end of the game, I can see that being something like 55 and 5 :conspire:

That was pretty pathetic. I wouldn't mind him getting kicked out for that.. attacks like that are unnecessary, espeacilly when you're trying to do nothing other than take out the other teams best player.

If Robbie Schremp gets one, he'll get 5..

He's been the best player on the ice so far, and if not for a goal post and a very nice glove save he'd have 2 already. NHL calibur shot. Hunter said it's similar to a Joe Sakic wrister.. and I can't argue that :pimp:

Rimouski must score early in the third to get a little momentum, or this game is over. The Oceanic's undeciplined style in the early going handed London too many chances and they deserved to be down three - zero. Hopefully they can score a few in the third to make things interesting again.

It's about time!

Great shot by Robbie, congradulations to the Knights, as I'd say this game is all but formally over!

Anyone see who won the most valubale goalie award of the Mem. Cup? What a joke. About as homerish as the reffing. I thought that officiating in the NHL was suspect, the OHL reffing or at least the reffing in the Memorial Cup makes German soccer refs look like Saints...
