Kevin Lowe finally responded to the charges leveled at him by Brian Burke, that Lowe's offer sheets last year have been a major contributer to the escallation in salaries in the NHL. You can read the story here: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Edmonton/2008/07/05/6074631-sun.html

So what do you think? As a Canuck fan I am inclined to agree with some of Lowe's points about Burke's less than stellar hockey acumen. He might be media savy but he has lucked into most of his on ice success, and has made signing or trade decisons that in hindsight have hindered his teams.

I agree with everything that Lowe said except about how Burke left Nonis with nothing to work with.

Nonis took over a team that had won the Northwest Division, was one of the highest scoring lineups in the league and was widely considered to be just a goaltender and another top 6 forward away from being a legitimate threat to win the Stanley Cup.

It wasn't Brian Burke that traded away all those 2nd and 3rd round picks for dregs at the trade deadline.

It wasn't Burke that panicked out of the lockout and dumped Sopel for a 2nd round pick.

It wasn't Burke that allowed assets like Jovanovski, Ruutu, Morrison and Naslund to walk from this club for nothing.

Nonis had an entire third of the league to add from during the first UFA period after the lockout.

And it hasn't been Burke that has done virtually nothing through free agency to add to the depth of this hockey club over the last three years. Maybe you can't build your team through free agency, but you can certainly address your lack of depth. Just about every other GM in the league added significant assets in July over Nonis' tenure as GM here. Nonis had an entire third of the league to add from during the first UFA period after the lockout. So what the hell was wrong with Fatboy?

Throw in Nonis' track record in the first round of the draft, and it is clear that it was Dave Nonis that decimated this team and has left it in a state of disaster, not Brian Burke.

I find the whole thing amusing. I happen to think that Lowe was spot on in his assessment of Burke lucking onto Pronger for that last piece of the puzzle largely created by Bryan Murray in Anahiem. Also Burke is stubborn and loathe to admit mistakes or address them (exhibit 1: Dan "Lenny" Cloutier), but I am preaching to the choir here. It just makes me wonder what the Leafs will look like in 3-5 years if and when Burke takes over?

Yeah, I think Burke will be a disaster in Toronto, but it will fun to watch. It'll be fun to watch Nonis crap all over Anaheim when he takes over for Burke there as well.

Burke fired back at Lowe. Kind of exposed Kevin Lowe as the classless act he is over the Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan remarks.

Hey guys,
Check this out. I hope this is enough incentive for the crew to kick some butt when Anaheim strolls into town next season:

Wonder if Lowe switching positions in the Oil front office was a direct result of the above.
