(CP) - The Stanley Cup is Canada-bound in The Canadian Press' simulated NHL season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will meet the Calgary Flames for the NHL title after winning three straight to down the Buffalo Sabres four games to three in the Eastern Conference final in action simulated for The Canadian Press by Electronic Arts, using its made-in-Vancouver NHL 2005 game.
The Flames, who finished second overall in the regular season behind only Detroit, have been waiting since last Thursday when they wrapped up a sweep over No. 4 St. Louis in the Western final. Captain Jarome Iginla led the way with three goals and three assists during the series. The Sabres, seeded sixth in the East, opened against No. 7 Toronto with a 3-1 win at home before the Maple Leafs rallied to win 4-3 behind two goals from Darcy Tucker. The series switched to the Air Canada Centre, where Buffalo won 4-3 and 3-1 with Miroslav Satan collecting three goals and two assists for the Sabres.
Then Toronto took over, winning 3-0 and 3-2 before closing out the series with a convincing 5-0 win in Buffalo on Wednesday thanks to a hat trick by captain Mats Sundin and a goal and an assist from Dany Heatley.
Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final is Friday in Calgary.
