Hughson's up for grabs!!! (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080214.truth15/BNStory/GlobeSportsHockey/?query=)
The best off ice prescence of the Vancouver Canucks Jim Hughson is an unrestricted free agent as his contract with Rogers Sportsnet Pacific is due to expire.
Hughson is having to decide between CBC's HNIC to replace Bob Cole for the East Game and Rogers Sportsnet Pacific, he does not want to do both for reasons of travel and workload.
If I were Nonis I would send the Leafs Hughson for Sundin and a second round pick and in case Sundin bolts back to Toronto over the summer...
I sign Kevin Quinn of the Oilers and Sportsnet West to an offer sheet because Kevin Lowe and the Oil are no strangers to them.
Supposedly Kevin Quinn is rumored to replace Hughson on Sportsnet Pacific, but I have no source.

It's too bad. I think we're gonna lose him. i think Cole and Neil are 15 years overdue for retirement and it looks like CBC's been grooming Hughson for the job. So long Jimbo.....

Hughson is the best play-by-play man in the country, and the number one seat on HNIC is the best gig for a hockey play-by-play guy, so he will be right where he belongs.
I truly hope Hughson stays in the west and doesn't fall for the "center of the universe" hype.
He's from the west and in reality why should the second game of HNIC be less glamourous than the first other than thats what TO wants us to believe?
Stick it to the suits Jim and "stay west young man"

It's not a glamor thing. The first game has a much larger audience and Hughson is the best in the country so that's where he belongs.
Besides, with respect, Sportsnet Pacific productions are mickey mouse from go to whoa.

What?
Thats somewhat like saying Ovechkin and Crosby should both be in NY because its a bigger market.
I don't believe there is a law that the best broadcaster Must work in the biggest market.
Hughson obviously likes living in the west so I say Stay here and do the second game and don't succumb to the pressure of "The first game has a much larger audience and Hughson is the best in the country so that's where he belongs."

I'm talking business here, not sentimentality.
Don't forget hockey is a business so if there was a way for both Ovechkin and Crosby to be in NY that would be an eminently sensible business thing to do.
Since Hughson is the best of course CBC would want to feature him in the prime market. It's one way CBC can keep its audience, hence its advertisers, hence its income.

I think Hughson wants to have the larger audience for the weekly game in Vancouver. That fact that he wants to stay where his home in Vancouver is why he hasn't signed a contract to do CBC's Eastern HNIC game.
Sure the best broadcaster gets the nod to do the East's HNIC game, but it's his decision of whether or not he wants to do it. I could very well see Hughson saying "sorry I'm from B.C. I want to stay in B.C.". The only way Hughson goes to Toronto is because the money is better, and the money most likely will be better. That's why this isn't an easy decision for him.
There is another consideration. Given the length of time the incumbent on HNIC tends to remain as play by play guy this is not an opportunity that is likely to ever come Hughson's way again.
If he ever wants to go big now is likely the time, go big or stay home, forever.

First Hey Dave long time no see:wave:
Second according to William Houston, Bob Cole wants to hang around for two more years. I don't see Hughson going to Toronto to do Ottawa and Montreal games.

What you say is of course true and we all understand this but not to beat this to death I say to Jim Hughson...Screw it and stay in the west,CBC won't fire you for wanting to do the second western game.
Not everyone is willing to sacrifice their happiness to be the biggest fish in the pond and obviously Jim wants to be out west or he would have left long ago.

Hi KB  Great to "see" you.
I agree if Cole wants to hang around for another 2 years Hughson is not likely to do the back up broadcast out east. He's been out a couple of times and I thought, such a waste to bury him in a regional broadcast, he should be national.
Now I know BC is a regional broadcast but that's OK because I can get him on these broadcasts.
My hopes went way up when someone on here mentioned Cole was retiring at the end of this season.

If the best broadcasters should be doing the first game for HNIC, why the hell are Cole and Neil doing it? Maybe they were the best at some point, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Neil is hardly on anymore he's pretty much the color guy for Sabres home games now.
I guess when you sign on with CBC it's for life, most of their broadcasters have been on air for years and years in spite of their declining talents.
And that's why, if Hughson is interested in the #1 slot he has to move when it's available because it probably won't come free again in his lifetime.

Actually there is a dearth of talent with in the ranks of the CBC Sports right now. Scott Moore ( an ex TSN-Sportnet behind the scenes guy) was brought in last year to rebuild the franchise. They lost CFL football, they lost Chris Cuthbert and Brian Williams to TSN and Don Whitman to cancer, they don't have much except amatuer sport and HNIC, save for a few Raptor games and Blue Jay games. Hughson is the most credible name available right now.

Here is the latest: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2008/03/11/jim-hughson.html. Looks like he is staying with HNIC and Blue Jay games, no mention on Sportsnet Pacific and Canuck broadcasts.

It does say exclusively:
"With Jim and Bob Cole, CBC Sports now employs the top two play-by-play announcers in this country for our hockey broadcasts. Having Jim in our lineup exclusively for the next six seasons, on both our hockey and our baseball telecasts, is great news for our viewers and great news for CBC Sports."
That leads me to believe he won't be doing Sportsnet Pacific or Canucks PPV broadcasts.
Sadly this means Hughson will take over from Cole in a year or two and be condemend to do Maple Leaf broadcasts for the rest of his career.
No more "GREAT SAVE ............" because in Toronto there won't be any great saves.

So I guess now the focus shifts to the Canucks broadcasts, and who will do those. I don't think Shorthouse will be so lucky as to get that job, but will we have someone who already works with Sportsnet, or will it be a total unknown?
Doug McLeod I believe is out of work, how about him. He can call Markus Naslund captain Canuck if he is still around.
