While the Vancouver Canucks' struggles have finally pushed them out of playoff position, the Chicago Blackhawks are hoping Jonathan Toews' return will spark a postseason push that needs plenty of help.

The Canucks look to bounce back from yet another home loss Saturday night when they continue their season series with a Blackhawks team set to welcome back one its top young players.

Vancouver (27-22-7) has one win in its last six games and two in its last 11 to fall to ninth place in the Western Conference, one point behind Nashville. The Canucks have been particularly bad in recent weeks at General Motors Place, where they have lost consecutive games and five of their last six, including a 6-2 defeat against Colorado on Saturday night.

An inconvenient schedule may not help matters. Despite flying home overnight Thursday following a 2-1 win in Atlanta - their first victory in regulation since Jan. 4 - the Canucks are playing on back-to-back days.

Vancouver, though, has played well against Chicago (24-25-5) this season - winning both matchups between the teams - and is 9-1-0 at home against the Blackhawks since a 5-4 loss on Oct. 4, 2001.

But Henrik Sedin, who has 11 goals and 43 assists, has been held off the scoresheet in his last five games versus Chicago. Sedin scored on the power play Saturday, giving him two goals and three assists in a four-game point streak at home.

That goal, however, wasn't nearly enough as the Canucks - playing without their top defensemen - struggled against Colorado. Willie Mitchell (fractured vertebra), Kevin Bieksa (calf), Aaron Miller (foot) and Lukas Krajicek (shoulder) are all sidelined. Vancouver has yielded four goals or more in six of its last nine games.

Chicago, meanwhile, has scored three goals or less in each of its last eight contests, and is eager to get Toews back on the ice. The rookie center is expected to return Sunday after missing 16 games with a sprained left knee.

Toews was among the NHL rookie leaders with 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) in 36 games before getting hurt during a game in Los Angeles on Jan. 1. Still, he ranks fourth on the Blackhawks in scoring, and his 15 goals are second only to Phoenix's Peter Mueller among all rookies.

"It's been long enough at this point," Toews said after practicing with a brace on his knee Saturday. "It's taken pretty good care of itself and I don't think anything is at risk by going out and playing at this point. We've given it enough time to rest up and recover properly."

The Blackhawks picked up their first win on a season-high seven-game road trip Thursday night, beating Calgary 3-1, but remain nine points out of a playoff spot in the West.

"The way the standings are in the league today, if you can string a few wins together you're right back in the middle of things," said Chicago winger Patrick Sharp, whose team started the trip (0-2-1). "We feel we have a team that can win and hopefully this can be the kick-start to a winning streak."

The Blackhawks need Nikolai Khabibulin to put together a strong run if they hope to make the postseason for the first time since 2002. The veteran ended a personal 10-game losing streak Thursday night, making 26 saves for his first win since Dec. 26.

Khabibulin, though, has a 3.94 goals-against average in losing his last four games in Vancouver.

Well, all I got to say about this is I pray to the Lord above that this young Hawks team spent the last two nights in Vancity getting laid and drunk and all in all - their heads out of game shape. What our boys need is a good ole fashioned barn burner where they have a night like Colorado had last night. A night where almost everyone is in on the scoring - a night were some fun is had.

Otherwise. more of the same I suspect.

If there are two places the Hawks hate playing, they are California and B.C. I really hope we win this one.

I voted that Nonis will sit on his hands

I honestly don't know what to expect. They will probably squeek one out again. Then we will hear about being back in the playoff hunt, and if they get the walking wounded back, who knows how far a hot goal tender can take them and I'll have a feeling of deja vu from my time in Leaf nation (Ontario in the 70's and 80's) or Edmonton in 2006 and look how well, in the long run. That operating Philosophy has worked out for those franchises.

What is this badwagon crap? I watched the entire first two periods of last night's game and listened to the third period on the radio on my way to work. Does that sound like a bandwagon jumper? Just because I won't tolerate this team missing the playoffs?

You want me to come on here all the time and pretend everything is alright? Shout Go Canucks Go to the heavens even when this team gets blown out at GM Place again and again and again?

I have Canucks jackets, hats, jerseys, blankets, T-shirts, keychains, playing cards, socks, books, mousepads, beer mugs, travel mugs, coffee mugs, boxer shorts, caledars, Christmas ornaments, posters, framed pictures, signed hockey sticks, autographs, pucks, penants, post-its, paper folders, stationary, pins, pens and pencils. I have ticket stubs and programs from their games dating back to the 70s. I even have a letter Kevin McCarthy sent my dad thanking him for replacing the ring that the Canucks used to give their players for five years of continuous service when it got stolen and a Christmas card I got from the team one year.

I've been in this for 32 years, brother. I saw my first Canuck game live when I was two. I don't jump on and off the bandwagon; I own the phucking thing.

I think its time I took a long break. I am sorry you took the poll to have anything to do with you - it was not it's aim. It was a mere joke to highlight the times.

Ya Rusty, be careful with jokes around here. I remember someone taking my bandwagon poke, a little too seriously as well. ;) ;)

The first is half over but no score. From what I've seen so far we're gonna win this one. I'm guessing 3-1.

Do you have some used toilet tissue and handchiefs dating back to the eighties you keep around?

Well, the guys worked hard enough to win a hockey game tonight. As pissed as I was the game had to go as far as a shootout, I can't fault their effort. I think this will be a good reward for them to be reminded where effort gets you tonight. I hope they contrast their effort tonight with their bullshit Saturday and do what works better.

Tried to get my Dad to gamble his Bobby Hull signed puck on the game tonight. He didn't bite like Khabibulin on Shannon's move.

Speaking of Shannon, how nice it was for Vigneault to use someone creative and young in the shootout. Maybe this will pave the way for Raymond to get a chance.

Isn't it nice to know that tampering with the mail is a federal offense?

It was a nice change for sure. Kabby's lucky it was Shannon he punched in the back of the head. If it was me, I'd have dropped him. :box:

That was one of the worst displays of sportsmanship I've ever seen. Didn't Bertuzzi get a season and a half suspension for a cheap shot to the back of the head?

What a baby.

Looks like there may be some good news on the horizon. Mitchell could be back by the weekend, and they expect Bieksa back by the end of the month.

The news is still not good on Krajicek, though. He has no strength in the shoulder at all, and they are still running tests to identify the problem. He could be done for the year.

And still not much being said about Morrison. Last word is still mid-March, but that might be optimistic.

Miller won't play Thursday, but if it's only a hairline fracture I can't see him being out much past the weekend.

That is good news, but why do I think that Nonis may end up having to be a sellar rather than a buyer by the end of the month? That is assuming he does anything:rolleyes:

Well KB, what can I tell ya? You and I know both know that some people need to be hit over the head with a brick before they can see clearly...

Did anyone else catch that quote of the night in Sunday's paper after they were hammered by the Avs? Apparently a fan that was taking an elevator in GM Place after the game didn't know he was sharing it with Nonis and Tambellini...he looked around and asked if anyone had a paper bag...

LOL!!!

Almost pissed my Canuck boxers over that one.
