The acquisition of All-Star goaltender Tomas Vokoun has helped the Florida Panthers recover from the worst trade in franchise history. That, however, doesn't mean that Roberto Luongo isn't missed.

Luongo faces the Panthers on the road for the first time since the blockbuster deal that sent him to the Vancouver Canucks 19 months ago in a matchup of struggling teams Friday night.

Although he was Florida's best player in his five seasons with the team, Luongo was unable to lead the Panthers to the playoffs. With arguably the league's best goaltender set to hit the free-agent market, Florida decided to trade its marquee player to the Canucks on June 23, 2006.

Heading to Vancouver with Luongo was defenseman Lukas Krajicek and a sixth-round draft pick in exchange for two-time 30-goal scorer Todd Bertuzzi, goaltender Alex Auld and defenseman Bryan Allen.

Luongo, who signed a $27 million, four-year contract with the Canucks just six days after the trade, flourished with his new team, leading Vancouver to the Northwest Division title last season while he was selected as a finalist for the Vezina and Hart Trophies.

Bertuzzi, meanwhile, never appeared in a game for the Panthers and was traded to Detroit on Feb. 27 after sitting out most of the 2006-07 season with a back injury. Auld went 7-13-5 with a 3.34 goals-against average in 27 games in his only season with Florida.

Allen has become a serviceable defenseman for the Panthers, but has only eight points in 48 games this season.

Florida center Stephen Weiss was Luongo's teammate from 2001-06.

"I miss the guy, he's a good guy," Weiss told the Panthers' official Web site. "I loved playing with him. Obviously I hope he does really well, but not (Friday)."

Luongo is in the midst of another outstanding season, but has slumped with the rest of his teammates lately.

He allowed four goals on 27 shots as the Canucks (26-21-5) opened a four-game road trip Thursday with a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay, the worst team in the Eastern Conference.

Vancouver, which is 2-7-1 in its last 10 games, played without four regular defensemen. Sami Salo sat out with a groin injury, joining Krajicek (shoulder), Willie Mitchell (back) and Kevin Bieksa (lacerated calf) on the sidelines.

"We're not going to use excuses," Luongo said. "We've had injuries before and we've had guys step up. We've got to play hard every night. I'm going to control what I can control and not be worried about anything else."

Luongo rejoined the team after missing the All-Star game and Vancouver's 4-3 loss to Dallas on Tuesday to spend time with his pregnant wife.

Florida (22-25-5) will need a strong second half to avoid missing the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season. The Panthers are tied for 13th in the East, seven points behind the eighth-place New York Rangers.

Poor play at home continues to plague the Panthers, who dropped to 1-5-3 in their last nine games at BankAtlantic Center with a 1-0 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday.

Vokoun had another strong performance with 40 saves, but Florida failed to score for the third time in its last 14 games.

Captain and leading scorer Olli Jokinen sat out the last two periods due to flu-like symptoms.

"He's our big shooter," Weiss said. "It's tough when you lose a guy like that. That stuff happens. We have to find a way to score goals without him."

Jokinen hopes to play despite missing practice Thursday.

The Canucks are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with the Panthers, winning five and tying two. Florida hasn't beaten Vancouver since Oct. 20, 1999.

Perhaps this would be the PPV for all Canuck fans to boycott. Maybe then ownership will get the picture, that is, we as fans are not interested in being played like Leaf fans have for so many years. So so teams that compete are good enough...bah.

Something needs serious addressing from either the team or the management or the coaching mantra or something....but it's got to be dealt with and in my life experience the quickest way to have someone listen to your point of view is by effecting their revenue stream negatively. It's as old as the art of war.

And it's not that one PPV boycott would bankrupt the team, however it would make someone pay attention to the fact that "johnny Canuck supporter" isn't ponying up when the team he has committed his time to isn't making the necessary efforts to satisfy the situation.

Just do it.

Rusty, tape your ankles before you jump. ;) Nice poll options. Seriously though, the time for change is well upon this team I agree. But to drag it down with Leaf like comparisons is a little much.

I''l be watching, (for some glimmer of hope) because I already paid for the entire package, but I'm not sure a couple of boycotted PPV's would do anything to influence management anyway. String together a 10 game unbeaten streak and the fans/media will all be back planning the parade route.

I think they might actually pull this one out WITHOUT having to come from behind.

Montador gets two and Burrows chips in with a shorty confirming Vigneault's appreciation of a plugger!

This trip could very well sink this team. If they lose one more game on it, they'll be competing for fifth in the West at best.

Colorado and Calgary smoked their Southeast trip earlier this season, and that has put them in a position they like being in. Vancouver needs to find a way to do the same thing.

This team has played poorly against teams out of their divion 0-4 against the Sharks, 0-3 against the Kings, 0-2-1 against Detroit, and a current record of 1-2 against the Southeast highlight this team's trouble out of the division. If they do make the playoffs, I doubt they'll be so lucky as to walk past Colorado, Minnesota, and Calgary for their Western Conference matchups.

So I am jumping off the bandwagon cause I am essentially supporting everything that has been said here on this board for about a week now...:conspire: Sure, whatever. And all I am saying with regards to the Leafs is fans there have accepted everything they're fed for eons now while ownership continues to pocket millions. :slant: And where do they stand today...?

All I am saying is it's not wrong now and then to remind people who butters their bread. Teams with this level of exposure should be the best, it's good for hockey, it's good for the game. Just look at tonights game, look how many empty seats there were....no one really cares. Hockey's a borderline freak show in the south...but I am trailing off topic.

Anyway, the only reason you think my statement is too harsh is because you've already paid for the game. Too bad I guess, let that be a lesson to you next year when they come calling for you money...especially if this team should miss the playoffs...while I sit atop the bandwagon...:pimp:  :thumb:

Another disappointing finish. What's this the third in three games now?

I like the way Luc Bourdon looked. He's the type of guy who shoots first and never asks questions. He got his shot on net and he got good quality shots on net. He could be like any intimidated young defenseman rushing the play or only making the safe play just dumping the puck into the corner so the coach doesn't yell at him, but he isn't, he's getting his shots through to the net, and that is an important quality in a blueliner now.

Penalty kill was the killer tonight. Well either the penalty kill or our powerplay. We couldn't stop them late in the game, and when we had a gift powerplay in the third after we took the lead for the third time, we could have sealed the deal with another powerplay goal. However they choked up.

Good teams can keep bad one from fighting their way back into the game. If you give Detroit a powerplay in the third when they have the lead, they're damn well going to show you that you shot yourself in the foot when you did that. If they don't, they try damn hard to work the puck all over your zone to get another chance to show you.

Agreed on Bourdon, big time. He's looked really good these last two games. I love the cannon! Nearly put it through the net in the last outing! :wicked: We need to see more of that from him. I also really liked how he went right after that Florida player who gave lou the little shot after the play ended. Than Miller's right there backing the kid up. One of the better moments of the game for me.

One thing is for sure, the look like they did last year in November December when nothing they did was good in the sense that their efforts had no W's at the end of it. They'll snap out of it. Daniel hadn't scored in 6, which is fairly normal for the twins. They score, score and score then the well dries up for about 5 games, then - bam, there they come again. And it seems to me they're like Luo, our team goes where they go.

As was said during the intermission last night, the Ducks are not havin' much fun either right now. They've lost 4 in a row....

There's part of me that wants to think that because this team has never lost three regulation games in a row all season, that they are really just in a slump right now, and once the divisional games come back they may just hit fire again.

However what the season comes down to is not simply whether or not you can win your division and assure yourself a playoff spot, it's to determine whether or not you can win a Cup. When you drop both games against the league's slump busters, it questions whether or not you can get down to business with the time comes and win a Cup.

Hey I've got a new thread idea!
