Selanne is back with the Ducks, another classless move by Brian Burke. I really don't have any issues with Teemu Selanne as a hockey player and how he plays the game, but I've said before and I'm saying again that players with no injury problems coming into camp should sign a contract or announce their retirement before the season begins.

It's classless for Burke to call on next to retirees to keep his team in the hunt. Maybe next Mark Messier will be suiting up for the Oil and Patrick Roy will be strapping the pads on for Colorado to solve their goaltending problem come March.

I've just read about 100 posts crying about this. Nobody crys fowl about Cujo resigning or if Forsberg comes back. Yea, they weren't retired, but they are still FA's. These are the types of things you are gonna see in the `cap years'.

People are saying there should be a deadline for players to make decisions on comming back. There already is one. It's called the trade deadline.

Don't forget this could blow up in Burks face. I hope it does. Some young kid has to lose a roster spot and team chemistry will change a little too. Burke already had to give up McDonald and both of these guys are likely to retire again next year. Nothing says these additions will guarantee a cup or even help them. It could take Selanne 30 games to get going.

Bottom line is it's legal and creative. If your team has superstars who will agree to take 2/3 of a season off to save you money. It might make a difference. Who knows if it will be a positive difference.

Totally agree with you dude...and I'll add this: Chelios for example, he's played I think about 10 mins a game all year. Maybe shelf him until the trade deadline and bring him in late so he can play serious minutes for you...(not the Detroit needs the help) but you get my point....maybe:laughing:

Anyway, I don't really care. I've always seen the Neids and Selanne thing as veteran respect. After years of service at any of your places of work I think extended leaves of absence are more than appropriate. Its respect which both players have earned IMO. Is it a little selfish? Sure, but arn't we all once we know we're no longer the new guy on shift??

Thought so.
