The St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks can almost always rely on strong goaltending. Lately, though, Manny Legace and Roberto Luongo have slumped, and their teams are struggling as a result.

Legace and the Blues hope to end a five-game losing streak while Luongo and the Canucks try to put the brakes on a four-game skid Wednesday night at GM Place.

Recently named to his first All-Star team, Legace hasn't been sharp in his last two starts - both against Nashville. He allowed four goals on 15 shots before he was pulled in the second period Saturday in a 5-2 loss, and gave up five goals on 26 shots in Monday's 6-3 road defeat.

"We failed to execute in certain key situations," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "I thought that we did some solid things, but we can't give up that many goals on that few of shots."

Legace is 0-2-1 with a 4.03 goals-against average in his last four games. He has lost his last three starts at Vancouver, yielding 12 goals.

Brad Boyes, Dan Hinote and Keith Tkachuk had goals Monday for St. Louis (22-18-6), which has been outscored 26-13 during its longest losing streak of the season.

One reason why St. Louis is 6-9-5 in its last 20 games is a power play that has converted only nine of 84 opportunities in that span.

"We're battling hard, but just not executing the plays," defenseman Barret Jackman said. "We have to get back to the basics until we get everyone working together and get synched again."

To return to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, the Blues need to play better on the road. They are 8-10-2 away from home, where they play 21 of their final 36 games.

Boyes' goal Monday was his career-high 27th of the season and gave him six in his last six games.

Although far from the only reason for his team's season-high four-game skid, Luongo hasn't been sharp lately. He has allowed three goals or more in five of his last six starts, including Monday's 4-2 home loss to Minnesota.

"Listen, I'm trying to do the best I can out there," Luongo said. "I'm a human being like everyone else. It's hard to be on top of you're A-game for 82 games. Obviously I gave up some bad goals tonight but you can always do better."

Luongo would have been Legace's teammate on the Western Conference All-Star team, but he has decided to skip the game to spend time with his pregnant wife. Luongo also received permission to miss the Canucks' first game after the All-Star break, Jan. 29 at home against Dallas.

The Canucks (25-19-5) have lost four straight for the first time since a five-game skid from March 5-14, 2006.

Even playing at home hasn't helped Vancouver lately. It has lost three straight at GM Place after recording at least one point in each of its previous 14 games (12-0-2) there.

The Blues are 1-0-1 this season against the Canucks, but this is the first meeting in Vancouver. St. Louis has at least one point in nine of the last 10 meetings (6-1-3).

I am betting they all throw a huge party tonight now that the AS break has finally arrived. With the way things have been of late these guy really need to take a step back and recharge the batteries. Lets hope they pour themselves into this game and come out of it with an inspiring win which leaves them feeling good about coming back in a week.

I also feel a big one coming tonight. 5-0 Luongo is in top form. All pistons firing and at least 2 from the back end. The Sedins will get about 6 points.

That's about all my crystal ball will tell me.

If ever there was a game that could be called a needed slump buster this is it. The Blues currently have games in hand and could be poised to move up and snatch the 8th spot or better, the one the Canucks cling to. This team needs to find the something that turned a mediocre October into an exciting November and ridde that momentum forward into the playoffs.

I'll say they have a good finish for the first half. The Blues haven't been playing good hockey this year, and the mental lapses that let the Blues back into the last game these two teams played against each other will not be present.

I'll take it! :thumb: At this point a wins a wins a win.

First come from behind win of the year I believe...even if it took the stupid out as gord would say.

I like that they're on the road now after the AS break. Couldn't have come at a better time.

Until then..

Agreed on that Rusty, it's nice to see the Canucks have the right time for a road trip. This doesn't happen often. Hopefully the focus on the game the road trip will bring will place this team back where they should be in the standings.

Caught the replay of the second period on the drive home last night, and a replay it was...Canucks getting lots of chances, not finishing, end up trailing after 2 periods.

They are lucky they hit another slumping team, or they'd still be mired in a losing skid.

Brett Butt did a pretty good job doing the colour. You could tell he was throwing Shorty off a bit because he interjected a lot more than Morrison, McIntyre and Tomlinson did, but he certainly knows the game. He didn't inundate us with stats, but he was funny (he is a comedian, after all). All in all, I was impressed. He could actually do it full time if he wanted.

Did you like what he had to say about the Leafs Gord?

Lucky lucky. That disallowed goal for the Blues should have counted. That puck was in before anyone touched Luo. But hey, thems the breaks. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get screwed. Overall they played well but need to nail some more twine. Lots of opportunity and no finish. Good for Oly.

I cought him in the car during the first period, Shorty announced the Leafs 3-2 win over the Caps, the first win of the Fletcher era, and Brent said "Remember where you were, when you heard it" with just a touch of irony and sarcasm. A couple of times in Corner Gas, hockey refernces have been about the Vancouver Canucks, Brent Butt is a huge fan. He also said about Mick McGeogh (Magoo) that his going into hockey referrring is like Brent Butt becoming a Proctologist, the one liners are just waiting to be spoken.

LOL...

I liked the one where there was rough stuff developing and he said to Shorty "I'm going down there. Hold my coat."
