Three-game losing streaks are very rare for the Detroit Red Wings. One of the few things seen even less is one of their goaltenders failing to finish a game he started.

The league-leading Red Wings look to avoid a season-high fourth straight loss Thursday night when they host the Vancouver Canucks.

While every team experiences slumps at some point during an 82-game season, the Red Wings appeared to be almost immune to them. Before their current 0-2-1 skid, they had picked up at least one point in 36 of 44 games this season.

Detroit (33-10-4) had a four-game win streak snapped with a 6-5 shootout loss to Minnesota on Jan. 10 and followed that with a 3-2 defeat at Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa on Saturday.

Hoping to avoid matching their longest skid of the season, the Red Wings instead gave up the game's first four goals in a 5-1 defeat to visiting Atlanta on Tuesday.

Nicklas Kronwall scored in the third period for Detroit, which also lost three in a row Nov. 11-17. The Red Wings last dropped four straight from March 17-24.

"The key is to make sure we don't elongate this thing," Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood told the team's official Web site. "We don't want to start thinking about the bad bounces and think that they'll happen."

One of Detroit's many strengths is the NHL's best goaltending tandem. Osgood is 19-3-2 with a league-best 1.95 goals-against average while Dominik Hasek is 14-7-2 with a 2.14 GAA and three shutouts.

Osgood, though, was pulled for the first time this season on Tuesday after allowing four goals on 17 shots.

It was the first time since Hasek rejoined Detroit in 2006 that he entered a game in relief. Coach Mike Babcock is usually hesitant to bring the 42-year-old Hasek off the bench cold because of his history of groin injuries.

"Mike told me after the third goal to get ready, so I stretched a little bit," Hasek said. "I stretched for about five minutes. I felt comfortable going in."

Babcock has alternated his goalies most of this season so Hasek was in line to start Thursday regardless of Tuesday's outcome. Hasek had shutouts in back-to-back starts before he gave up three goals on 32 shots in Saturday's loss.

Despite a wealth of offensive talent, the Red Wings are 3-for-30 on the power play over the last 10 games. Making that lack of production worse is a penalty-killing unit that has allowed five goals in the past nine short-handed situations.

This will be the final stop on a three-game road trip for the Canucks (25-17-4), losers of three of four overall and four of five on the road.

Daniel Sedin and Kris Beech had goals in Vancouver's 3-2 loss Tuesday at Columbus.

The Canucks dropped to 0-14-1 when trailing after two periods.

"We haven't had one comeback all year. We weren't able to muster one tonight," coach Alain Vigneault said. "We are very good when we have the lead, but mental toughness is being able to push through and make a push in the third."

The Red Wings posted 3-2 victories against the Canucks on Oct. 24 and 28. Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom had three goals in those two games.

Well, time to step up eh! Let's see our boys show up with some fear in their eyes, some fire, some desperation! It's time to right the ship, enough pissing around. Raymond's up, perfect opportunity to show the team and all involved that you should be on this team...His speed alone will be a huge asset against a very dangerous animal in the Wings whom should be in a pretty bad mood themselves after a 5-1 arse reaming by the Thrashers the other night.

I love watching these two teams play....should be fun. We need a huge one from Lou and hey, since it's Naslunds 1000th....might be nice to see him walk away with the evening's accolades.

Enjoy!

I smell a train wreck. The Wings will be in a surly mood after what Hossa did to them at home, and Vancouver isn't at its sharpest right now. If I were Vigneault I'd leave Luongo out of the way and play Sanford.

7-1 Red Wings.

I have an uneasy feeling about this one. Scotty Bowman once said good teams don't loose 3 in a row, and the Wings have lost their last two. Couple that with a report that Salo has hyper-extended elbow and Mitchell was having back spasms, that I read this morning.

Well....I am pretty happy with their resolve. I mean, Raymond especially. First he basically watched Cleary skate to the net and score. However it seemed to not phase him too much; he was very effective and could have scored on more than one occasion following the blunder. :thumb:

I liked Cowan at times and Krajicek too. He looks like a player whom might have been hearing it from the boss of late. Good, he's better for it if I am onto something there.

Luo was steller at times. What can you say. Damn shame they couldn't pull out the win either. To make a call in OT and you don't earlier when Dom obviously pushes the net off?...tit for tat baby.

The Twins and Pyatt, very nice. Pyatt is really coming into his own. I am really liking this guy even more than I did when we got him...

Kesler, hmmm - he could pick it up a bit. He's got to find a way to take it to the next level. This guys got the moves and the shot....it's time he used it and made himself a real threat in all aspects of the game. When you look at his last 11 or so I believe he's got 4 points....:slant: With Mo down there is a real opportunity for him to make his mark as a center on this team. A center with a knack for big goals would be nice. I see him always trying to get someone else the puck....he's a sniper sleeper if you ask me. - hopefully in time he will really blossom. Too bad that time isn't now when he's needed most in that capacity.

Nice to see Linden out there, getting chances - contributing. :pimp: He brings stability. No matter what anyone tells me Linden is what this team must have. There are not many out there like him and all winners have one of them ole warhorses on the shelf...ready when you are.

Ritchie...not sure how I feel about him these days, tonight he played himself onto the bench it seemed. Here's another guy who simply has to find a way to score ( I mean two breakaways in one shift the other night!! ) or I can see him the next in line as a healthy scratch. Burrows too, he's playing this soso game. tons of effort, I give you that but he needs to do what he does best and that's piss people off; hit and chip etc. The odd fight wouldn't hurt either. I don't care that he's not a heavy weight. IT's that energy I am recalling that I am not totally seeing these days.

Bottom line is, they could have packed it in after 2 zip. If anything, loss or not, this is a huge character "reminder" if you will. They tied it up against the best team out there, losing streak or not. They made a game of it and for many parts of the last half owned the Wings end of the ice.

Those sonofabitch kings are next I believe. I simply hate Dustin Brown. See, there's a guy our Brown needs to deal with...wouldn't be too shocked to see him back. Another is Cowan but regardless, someone needs to send a message to that douche bag once and for all! :wicked:

Myself, I'm not buying into the 'moral victory'. We're not the Phoenix Coyotes, after all.

They were outshot 49-28. No Luongo, no contest.

They're currently 3 points ahead of 9th place Columbus, and the lack of scoring is really starting to catch up with them. With no scoring from Bieksa and Salo on the blueline this year, it's becoming apparent that not even Luongo will be able save this season unless something is done. They are last in the league in shots for and are falling like a rock in league scoring. Right now you are seeing what happens to a team that depends on its secondary scoring to come from the blueline and has that taken away from them.

Vigneault can talk all he wants about needing more energy from his team. What they need is scoring. Even with a best case scenario, where they win the division and get the third seed, this team as is won't go any farther than they did last season without more offense. Period.

It's time for a trade Nonis. Past time, actually.

And for gawd's sake, get Luc Bourdon up here.
