View Full Version : Roger Clemens trade rumors
Rumblings of a Roger Clemens trade from non-contender Houston to a reunion with either Boston or New York just won't go away. Both teams would pay his "rocket" like salary, including the $3 million bonus he automatically gets if he accepts a trade.
The aquistion of the Rocket would dramatically impact either side of the Red sox / Yankees rivalry. Clemens has been villified by fans of both teams for leaving. (but it was particularly bad in Boston when he was with the Yanks).
He is good friends with Curt Schilling, and Wells from their Yankee days...
what do you think?
Going to either team would suit me just fine. I have him in my fantasy Bball league and he has a better chance of scoring me wins on Boston or the Yanks. make the deal ;)
My vote goes to Boston. Back to where it all began for this Hall of Famer.
I voted for the Yanks... for the simple reason I don't want to see him in Boston!
Would Rocket have a say in which team he goes to?
I don't know if he has a no-trade clause. But he does get an automatic 3 million if traded.
At this point, Houston's owner vehemently denies that he would consider trading Clemens. But we're talking 18 million for this year... if Houston falls far out of contention - what's the point of paying all that money only to lose him at the end of a poor season anyway. That's why the rumors won't go away.
Due to his salary and the 3 million triggered bonus, it's widely believed the Yanks or Red Sox would be the only teams in contention to take Rocket.
Again pure rumor at this point.

I'd say Boston because he'll start and end his career as a Bo-Sox.

Sorry for the late post on this topic.
Didn't Roger retire last year.
Only to come out of retirement to play for the Stros because they are close to home.
I don't think the Rocket is going anywhere.

The United States choked in the qualifying rounds and didn't send a team, so Clemens decided to remain in the Major Leagues.

Yeah that's exactyl right. However, circumstances change. Rocket about faced on retirement, and did sign in his home town.
But if Houston turns out to have a dismal season and its apparent in July they are going nowhere. It's rumored that he has a verbal agreement with the Houston owner to get traded for a shot to end his career winning a series. Despite denials by Houston's owner.... people change their minds. (some speculate that his denials are mere damage control because Roger has sold tickets for Houston, despite their last place record.)
There are only 3 teams that could realistically take on Clemens from what I read.
1) the Yankees obviously - always have the blank checks in hand.
2) Boston - would be a bad move for them as they have many FA's to resign after this season. But they would probably do it just to block the Yankees from doing it.
3) tha Atlanta Braves. - I'm not knowledgable about their situation... but apparently, they can afford major young talent in exchange for rocket, from what I read.
The media has taken some "non-denials" by Clemens as a hint that a trade is quite possible.
Again the owner denies it, but things change fast in this world. If Clemens was to go public with his desire for a trade.... that would let the owner off the hook, when the time comes.
If I can figure out how to add the braves to this poll, I wil :)

I voted other. I think Roger wants to be back in good ol' Toronto. His only demand is that they go back to blue uniforms and old logo. Fair enough, if you ask me.

I can't quite figure out why the Blue Jays have little blue in their uniform?
