NHL reveals outdoor plans
September 17, 2007

BUFFALO, N.Y. (CP) -- The worst-kept secret in the NHL became official Monday: the Buffalo Sabres will play a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins outdoors on New Year's Day.

Attendance at Ralph Wilson Stadium is expected to surpass the NHL single-game record that was set on Nov. 22, 2003, when the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers drew 57,167 to The Heritage Classic at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.

Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills, has a capacity exceeding 73,000.

Tickets to the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic will go on sale in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET.

"Many of our players have great memories of playing outdoors when they were growing up," commissioner Gary Bettman said in a release. "This game provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase our great players, honour hockey's heritage and ring in the New Year with the best fans in sports."http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp?content=20070917_162857_5204

We had to know some US team would want to copy the Oilers and have an outdoor game.

I don't have to be a rocket scientist, heck I don't have to be the rocket scientist's dumb cousin to know that Bettman will be all over this. His response to the Oilers/Habs game will be nothing compared to the accolades he spews out for the Sabres/Pens game. He will spin the record attendance into increased interest in the entire US even though Buffalo is a proven hockey market. The US game will be the event for Bettman to spout off about US expansion and how the NHL is a major US sport. The Oilers/Habs game will become an afterthought to Gary because it's was an "evil Canadian" game and Canada means nothing to the NHL.

Anyways, good luck to the Sabres and Penguins but don't even think of having an alumni game because nothing will ever top seeing the players of so many Oilers and Canadiens championships on the ice again.

It took them two weeks to get the ice ready in Edmonton, they will have 8 days in Buffalo as the Bills play their last home game on the Dec 23. Also January 1, the US TV schedule is dominated by parades and College Football bowl games, good luck on the big TV ratings.

Isn't this par for the course for the NHL? Scheduling a supposedly important game to go up against something that will get a lot more coverage and ratings. I might check it out for a bit, but I'm sure I'll be busy doing other things on New Year's Day, like getting over a hangover...

Pittsburgh fans are unhappy that the team was only allotted 1,500 tickets for the Winter Classic game in Buffalo on Jan. 1, 2008.

"I had three computers going logged onto (Ticketmaster.com) and my wife went to a Ticketmaster outlet, and she was told they did not have any tickets," Mike Tomana complained to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. "I called the Penguins tickets offices at 10:04 a.m. and they said their tickets were gone."

The NHL sold 42,000 tickets to the Sabres/Penguins match at Ralph Wilson Stadium in only 30 minutes Tuesday. Sabres and Penguins season-ticket holders were upset they didn't get exclusive access to tickets before they were sold to the public.

Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and Buffalo Bills season-ticket holders were all given passwords to access blocks of tickets.

"It is ridiculous that the NHL held so many tickets for Maple Leafs season-ticket holders, Bills season-ticket holders and, especially, Blue Jays season-ticket holders," Buffalo resident Chad Cummins told the Tribune Review. "It is a shame what the NHL has done with the tickets for this game."http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/sports/story.html?id=6b252341-1c6c-4a55-994f-3427e16c8ef9

Holy crap. Leafs, Jays and Bills season ticket holders were given priority over Sabres and Penguins fans. What a crock. Way to go, Bettman and crew; piss off another group of NHL fans by giving priorities to arch rival Leafs fans, fans of a baseball team and the local football team's fans.

Good to see nothing has changed in the NHL's mismanagement of the league.

Hahahaha

Shows what the league really feels about Buffalo and Pittsburg as Hockey markets perhaps.
