Who's interested and in what format should we use?

J.R.
5-14-05, 2:36 PM
Interested.

The rank them 1-4 and receive those points based on who wins each game system.

I feel that works best when it's a round robin tournament.

Madferret
5-14-05, 4:17 PM
Same. With only 4 teams it will be near impossible for me to f*&# up like I did with original IIHF one...

:D

I'm intersted.

I think the best format is the one that JR mentioned.

The only problem with the rankings like that is that since there is only 4 teams it's very likely some people would have the exact same picks as others.

Hmm, goal differentials for each team? Junes, you think you could run this Pool? I'm already behind in updating the IIHF Pool and it's just not letting up at work lately....

Lemme know!

Hmm, goal differentials for each team?Sure. Sounds good.

Junes, you think you could run this Pool? I'm already behind in updating the IIHF Pool and it's just not letting up at work lately....

Lemme know!Yeah, no problem. I've got this one, man.

I'll make a post with the instructions, rules, etc. momentarily. Stay tuned to HS.

First off, here's the tournament schedule (http://www.chl.ca/CHLMemorialCup05/home.html):

Sat. May 21
Rimouski vs. London
7:00 p.m. ET

Sun. May 22
Ottawa vs. Kelowna
4:00 p.m. ET

Mon. May 23
London vs. Kelowna
7:00 p.m. ET

Tue. May 24
Ottawa vs. Rimouski
7:00 p.m. ET

Wed. May 25
Kelowna vs. Rimouski
7:00 p.m. ET

Thurs. May 26
London vs. Ottawa
7:00 p.m. ET

Fri. May 27
Tiebreaker-
if necessary
4:00 p.m. ET

Sat. May 28
Semi-Final
7:00 p.m. ET

Sun. May 29
Final
4:30 p.m. ET

To play our pool, all you need to do is assign each team a numeric value, 1-4, using each number once. You will be awarded the numeric value of each team as you have chosen per win, so if you think Kelowna is going to win the Cup, you would assign them 4. Likewise, if you think Rimouski will not win a single game, give them a 1.

Winner will be based on total accumulated points throughout the Round Robin, Playoff and Final Rounds.

For tiebreaking purposes, you must give each team a goals for/goals against differential. So if you think London will score 12 goals in the entire tournament and allow 8, then their G.D. is +4.

Please have your picks to me via private message (http://www.hockeystation.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=39) before Saturday, May 21st at 6 pm eastern (3 pm pacific). I will then post everyone's predictions in this thread.

Pick well. :)

Please post any questions about the pool in this thread or fire me off a PM.

J.R.
5-19-05, 9:29 PM
Keep the picks coming people.

So far only three participants (incl. me), so if you enter you'll have a good chance at the glory.

All I ask is that the picks are in before the much anticipated Knights/Oceanic game Saturday night.

Just a question, do they allow ties in the RR or do they play till a team wins?

J.R.
5-20-05, 3:08 PM
Just a question, do they allow ties in the RR or do they play till a team wins? Great question. I can't say I know for sure. I think they only play a five minute overtime, but I could be wrong. I can't remember a Memorial Cup tournament in recent memory when an R.R. game went into overtime.

go_leafs_go02
5-20-05, 7:16 PM
nope, its continous OT. No ties.

My picks will come in in a few minutes.

BURY
5-20-05, 7:53 PM
I'm pretty sure there's tie games because it's a round robin tournament. I may be wrong though.

Madferret
5-20-05, 9:17 PM
So it's NHL Playoff style OT then.....?

go_leafs_go02
5-20-05, 9:43 PM
Yup, Im pretty sure that is how it goes.
It makes it easier for points awarded too. If people predict ties, it can muddle the scoreboard up as well.

Madferret
5-20-05, 11:00 PM
But in the event of a tie Junes, seeing as non of us are really sure if they play cont. OT or just 5 min, just award the win and points to the lowest valued team for each poster in that particular game.

(Ex)...say I assigned London 4 and Ottawa 1, and in the Ottawa London game the game ended in a tie, I would get 1 point only. Everyone follow?

Same, thanks again for taking care of her. You going for the 67's Junes or one of the WHA teams? What a tourney is going to be, I know I'm picking up a case of Stella and playing the take-out menu game these next few days....

What a tourney is going to be, I know I'm picking up a case of Stella and playing the take-out menu game these next few days....Yeah, I usually cheer for an OHL team (minus Guelph or London), so I would like to see Ottawa being the 'dog and stealing a couple games. Kelowna would be a close two though, because I'm not a fan of Crosby. In regards to take-out, yah same here, although no Miss Artois for me.

I just thought I'd give another reminder for last minute participants. Only about three more hours to get your picks in.

We now have six participants. I think that's a good turn-out. Only two members have the same four through one predictions, so we may not have to rely on the tiebreakers too much. If I have time, I'll post everyone's predictions before the game tonight.

Anyways, fire me off your PMs before 6 pm eastern (3 pm pacific).

I don't really care too much either way, but since those games are more important why not have more points riding on them?

J.R.

I don't really care too much either way, but since those games are more important why not have more points riding on them? Yes, but a challenge to this system is to have people plan ahead and think who will win the most games and give them the '4.' Do you think we should re-seed or re-pick the teams? Perhaps change up the format. Any other ideas from participants?

I don't know about changing seeds or picks. I was just thinking you go with your originals, but I guess that may be unfair since some people may not have picked their '4' as the same team that they think will win the tourney.

Problem with the Semi-s is that your top team may or may not be playing, hence others can get an advantage over you since, the winner of the semis would play 2 games (Semi-Final, and Final) while the top team only plays once

Madferret
5-24-05, 6:05 PM

Double for the Finals, and hmm....no ideas coming up for the semis guys. Maybe a "pick the combined score" deal will work...
