It is official, Iron Mike is back with 8th NHL coaching job. Personally I think this is nuts! He has not taken a team to the playoffs in nearly 10 years. He has left a path of destruction and bad feelings in his wake for about 15 years now. I don't see how helps the Flames. There will be pools about which member of the roster is the first to be traded, and I wonder how many free agents will think twice about a deal with Calgary now?

I think Sutter is hoping Mike is going to do what he did in NY, and take the Flames that final step. They are a very good team. Solid D, Great goaltending(ofcourse we'll see how Capt'n Hook affects that) and imo the best all round player in the league in Iggy, who now has a good set-up man in Tanguay.

If they had played half as good on the road last year as they did at home they would have run away with the NW division. Perhaps Keenan is the guy to push them over the hump.

Ofcourse he could come in butt heads with everybody, destroy Kippers confidence by hooking him 20 times, and leave the team in ruins and out of the playoffs.

Definitely not the "safe" play by Sutter.

Fact is he hasn't do it since New York and that was 1994. Since that his act has worn thin and his welcomes have been worn out in several other cities. I remember when he was hired in Vancouver, my manager said it would take the Canucks 5 years to undo the damage of the Keenan tenure, it did.

Some of you might enjoy this, it is from a Vancouver paper but worth the read.

I had no idea of some of these antics. Like the goalie stuff in TO. I am surprise Burke didn't snap and tool him for such disrespect.

I have to admit, at seasons start I thought for sure there would be no long term extensions signed as the Flames players would "wait and see" - however as it stands there are only a few UFA's left on Calgary's current roster. However, there is on RFA in Dion Phaneuf that should garner the most attention. I'm thinking the Flames brass would want this kid locked up for a pile of years, however, something tells me the Phaneuf camp is gonna wait it out. He's gonna land a MASSIVE offer sheet next summer unless Calgary ponies up and after signing Iggy and Kipper long term I wonder where they'll find the cash.

I could see 29 teams looking to get in on Dion and I am betting he lands 7 mil.

That would cost a lot in draft picks, in addition to the 7 mil no?

5 1st rounders I think and I believe that's the max a team is compensated....some teams might be willing especially considering in a deal like the Penner signing, if he's worth three (if memory serves...) then :conspire:

Say for instance the Hawks were really interested, they've got a ton of youth and he could become a real cornerstone there. They'd really close the deal on becoming a contender in the very near future with a player like Phaneuf. Another team that could afford it is the Pens, financially and picks wise.

I know 7 mil is an outlandish claim but when you think of the money players are getting now (think Briere, Spezza) and then compare that to the cash spent by the Coyotes on Jovo I don't think I'd be too surprised if someone stepped up and paid something close to what I am suggesting. Even with the pick's compensation. And, if your the Flames, that many first rounders would be more than welcome. Yes, you lose a standout like Phaneuf however they've retained Iggy and Kipper.....something's gotta give.

OR, they let a few guys walk next summer, pay Phaneuf at a loyalty rate and hope for the best where their talent losses are concerned. Of course only if Phaneuf is into it. However, again I say, if Penner can get 4 mil....:slant: anything is possible RFA wise.

I thought that they dropped it to 3 first rounders?

I thought that they dropped it to 3 first rounders?

Not sure to be honest however I think it's based on how many dollars are involved.

Here's a scale that might help. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/2001free_agency/

Well Keenan didn't have his team looking to good tonight. They really could've made a statement by coming out strong in the third period, but they gave up the first goal early in the period and were sunk. The Alberta teams are starting to sink. Coming into tonight I believe both teams have lost four in a row.

And Rusty I think that restricted free agent compensation should be changed with the climbing rate of first rounders. You have to think most restricted free agents who are top class players like Phaneuf, or last season's Vanek and Parise are going to get a hell of a lot more than four million. With the way top players' salaries are now, no one should be getting five first round picks for one star player.

Sutter will be back behind the bench to end the season

Keenan is a useless coach, and GM. His methods no longer work in the new NHL

I think Keenan has really mellowed out lately. I remember when this guy was behind the bench in places like Chicago and Vancouver flipping out behind the bench screaming at officials and his own players, and now he look almost as calm and composed as Alain Vigneault.

That doesn't mean he respects his players any more that he used to, so his attitude in the locker combined with no results from his system on the ice are going to put his players against him. If Calgary doesn't start winning fast, their ship is going to be completely sunk for this season.

If Calgary can't be coached by anyone else but Daryl Sutter, you'd have to think that there are problems with this team's on ice personel. These guys aren't good enough to turn their back on guys like Playfair or Keenan.
