Josh Green netted a natural hat trick in the second period as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rochester Americans 5-2 to advance to the Western Conference Final. Tickets for the third round go on sale Saturday at noon.
The Moose got into penalty trouble early with Ryan Kesler getting a penalty followed by Danny Groulx once the first Rochester powerplay expired.
With Groulx in the box, David Cullen teed up a shot from the right side of the slot that beat Flaherty.
The Moose went on their first powerplay 5:29 in when Derek Roy received two minutes for hooking.
Just as the penalty expired, Jesse Schultz scored to tie the game. Schultz took a pass from Josh Green who was behind the net and one-timed it in.
Rochester almost pulled ahead after Kevin Bieksa coughed up the puck in his own zone to Geoff Peters but Flaherty bailed him out with a huge stop.
While killing a penalty, Alexandre Burrows was able to break free but lost a handle on the puck just as he was about to deke Miller in front.
Rochester moved ahead 2-1 when Paul Gaustad backhanded a shot five-hole past Flaherty while tangled up with Morrison.
Hard work in the final minute by Ryan Kesler drew a penalty, putting Manitoba on their second powerplay of the game. Gaustad will still serve the final 1:31 of that penalty at the start of the second.
After one, shots were 10-9 Rochester.
On that powerplay 1:01 into the middle frame, a quick passing play resulted in Josh Green all alone in front. After taking a pass from Danny Groulx, Green made no mistake and wristed it in.
18 seconds later, Green scored again to take a 3-2 lead. Kent Huskins wristed a shot from the blueline that Green tipped home.
Rochester had a great chance to pull even near the midway point of the second when penalties to Kevin Bieksa and Tomas Mojzis put them on a two-man advantage.
The Moose were able to successfully kill off the penalty, even generating a scoring chance near the end of it. Miller stopped Heerema's wrister from the right faceoff circle.
Ryan Kesler and Jeff Heerema broke in on a two-on-one late in the period. Heerema fed Kesler who had an open net but couldn't get a handle on the shot.
Shots in the second were 11-5 for the Moose and 20-15 overall after two periods.
It only took 54 seconds into the third period for the Moose to get a penalty. Tomas Mojzis was ticketed for holding, giving Rochester a chance to get back in the game.
Despite having to protect their two-goal lead, Manitoba came out in the third with an aggressive forechecking style.
The strategy paid off as Lee Goren scored to put the Moose up 5-2. He picked the puck up in the corner and skated out front before firing it in.
Frustration started to set in for Rochester midway through the period. Paul Gaustad sucker punched Justin Morrison from behind and then jumped on top of him, receiving a four-minute minor for roughing.
With 6:07 to play, Miller made a big save on Peter Sarno, who one-timed a pass from Josh Green at the top of the crease.
With just under four minutes to go, Lee Goren fired a shot off the crossbar.
In the final minutes, the capacity crowd of 15,015 were up on their feet saluting the Moose as the time wound down.
Way to go Moose. This is great to see
