OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler today announced defenceman Anton Volchenkov has been re-signed to a three-year deal with the club.

Volchenkov, 25, has recorded career-highs in assists (18 ), points (19) and penalty minutes (67) this season. The Moscow native also led the league in blocked shots (273), was 5th in plus-minus (+37) and was 12th in hits (205).

“Anton has been one of our top defencemen all season,” Muckler said. “We’re pleased to have secured him for the next three years, two of which were restricted and the third season when Anton would have been an unrestricted free agent.”

In four NHL seasons, Volchenkov has nine goals, 46 assists and 168 penalty minutes in 229 career games. He has also added one goal, five assists and 18 penalty minutes in 31 career playoff games.

Drafted by the Senators in the first round (21st overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Volchenkov has spent his entire career in Ottawa.

Volchenkov is signed for 3 years, 7.5 million (2.5/year) as per TSN. With this in mind I don't think Phillips gets much over 4M.

Redden continues to look overpaid. Hopefully he contributes in the playoffs, as after swearing and cursing his deal in the off-season I have yet to eat the tasty crow I crave so bad. His game has regressed from last season. Badly. To the point where only Meszaros is behind him on the depth chart right now. But at least he's going through a sophomore slump and it's not easy to, for the first time in your career, get the top pairing minutes, go up against the elite forwards of the league, and play in all situations. Plus, Redden has never been easy to play with.

Volchenkov @2.5 is a great signing and one of the best by our man Muckler. He's arguably one of the best defensive D men this year and I can't see him regressing a la Redden as Man U would say.
I agree we need to see something big this off-season from Redden or I'd like to see him traded. The good news is he's only signed for two years and IMO we should see a much better Redden next year

Redden did play his best this season but he is still a great defenceman. I would not look at him negatively at this point. He also offered to take less money a bit, and the same as whatever Chara would get, to keep them both here. He is a great team first guy.
