Staal, the Wolves' captain and game's No. 1 star, had a tremendous two-goal night in helping Sudbury take a stunning 2-0 series lead favored Barrie. He scored his third goal of the playoffs on a power play at 11:13 of the second period to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead. He followed that up with an unassisted goal at 6:28 of the third, putting Sudbury up 3-1. The Wolves eventually went on to win when Zach McCullough tallied on a power play at 13:15 of the second overtime. Staal also took a minor penalty in the game and is now plus-10 after seven playoff games.

glad to hear it.
Looking forward to seeing Staal's development between last camp and the next one. Not sure if he'll be NHL ready in time for the 07-08 season debut... but as long as he continues making strides he'll be worth the wait. :thumb:

Defensman take more time to season. i think staal could have been effective even this year on the rangers how much im not sure.

anyway i think staal makes the club next season. judging how his brothers both had instant success there is no reason why marc wont also. they grew up playing against each other on the family pond.

 Al Montoya #1 prospect? How can that be?

On another note, I questioned the Rangers taking Staal, I thought the Rangers were going to be like the Dodgers who kept drafting the brothers of talented Major Leagures and getting little return. But the Stall family seems to a very talented gene pool.

Mark Staal is touted as a regular top-2 on the NHL level. He's been pretty consistently wowing scouts during junior. He was credited with shutting down Malkin last year at the WJ. The accolades are there and he appears destined to make his mark on the Rangers when he's ready.

I did not see him play at last camp, but I read a lot of feedback from those who did and one thing was clear - Staal was in way over his head skating in the NHL - that's OK, like kryp said D-man usually take longer to "arrive" than forwards. He's got all the tools, he just needs to be fine tuned, and just flat out needs time to adjust to the speed of the NHL game.

He's got great size at 6-4 and 200+ pounds for a young guy. I along with many Ranger faithful are hopeful that he will be develop into a rock on the Rangers blue line and be the answer to Sidney Crosby 8 times (maybe more) per season.

Since Renney is not crazy about inexperience on the blue line... I think that - unless he has made remarkable strides in a year - Staal will not earn a roster spot when the 07-8 season begins. But when he starts is not important... I think he's a lock to become an impact player. And Between him and Sanguinetti, the Rangers should have a whole lot more dimension 2-3 years from now, and be a much better all around team.
