I found this at a blog by James Mirtle and I thought it was an intresting read. Essentially a team needs around 95 points to get into the playoffs, as of yesterday here are the records teams need to get to the magic 95 point plateau:
Western Conference
1. Detroit - 5-15-1
2. Nashville - 6-15-0
3. Anaheim - 7-13-1
4. San Jose - 10-12-0
5. Dallas - 11-12-0
6. Vancouver - 10-11-1
7. Calgary - 11-10-1
8. Minnesota - 12-9-0
9. Edmonton - 16-5-1
10. Colorado - 16-5-1
11. St. Louis - 17-4-0
12. Chicago - 21-1-0
13. Phoenix - 21-1-0
14. Columbus - 21-0-1
15. Los Angeles - Eliminated (max 92)
Eastern Conference
1. Buffalo - 5-17-0
2. New Jersey - 7-14-1
3. Pittsburgh - 11-12-0
4. Ottawa - 11-11-0
5. Tampa Bay - 12-9-0
6. Atlanta - 12-8-0
7. Toronto - 14-7-1
8. N.Y. Islanders - 14-7-1
9. Carolina - 14-6-0
10. Montreal - 13-6-1
11. Boston - 16-6-1
12. N.Y. Rangers - 16-6-0
13. Florida - 18-2-1
14. Washington - 19-1-1
15. Philadelphia - Eliminated (max 84)

Excellent research. Looks like all but the Panthers, Caps, and Flyers have a legitimate shot at making the post-season.

Thanks for that, I had suspected that 95 points give or take would mean playoffs and Mirtle's article gave me something to post and specualte on.

How fun is it to know that if your team won out the rest of the season that they would still be 11 points out of a playoff spot? Extremely fun is the answer.

You know Philly's looking extremely dangerous for next season. I give Holmgren allot of credit for the Forsberg trade and he hosed Waddel with Zhitnik IMO. Philly is going to have an awful lot of $$$ to play with this summer as well.
Things are looking very good for Philly for the next few years mate, Holmgren made sure he got the most out of this bad season. Smart GM.

Quite the drop off after 8th there. The Wild only have to go 3 games over .500 the rest of the season, while both the Oilers and Avs would have to go 11 games over .500 to hit 95 points. And here I thought the NW was the best division in hockey.:D

Yeah, they have what now looks like a promising future. But this current team is just so awful I have physical pain just watching them. I mean thy can be up 4-2 in the 3rd and almost count on them, at least blowing the lead, if not losing altogether.
And here I thought the NW was the best division in hockey.:D
And the South East - winners of the past two Stanley Cups - the joke of the NHL. :eyebug:

No D ;) I haven't found one, but it seems to have been fairly accurate at least for the West as it showed the contenders from pretenders.
The only team in the West that has a shot of getting in is the stinkin Avs. I'd rather they get in then the Wild or Flim Flams because the Wild have the Canucks' number and I just hate the Flim Flams so much. But the odds of the stinkin Avs getting in are shown to be low unless one of the other two NW teams takes a nose dive worse than the Oilers current death spiral.

On a somewhat related matter....the NHL should change the name of the Presidents Trophy to the Detroit Redwings Trophy...holy crap man. When did the Wings get 99 pts....lol
