This was announced a while ago, I'm surprised at how quiet the media has been about this announcement. Well, not really, they are a southern team. Anyways, Lombardi is a former scout GMing a team built for the future so that means he's selling vets for prospects and draft picks and he's got plenty of players worth looking at. Rob Blake is one (not sure, does he have a NTC?) but his salary is high - $6 mil - and still has another year left on that monster contract. Some GMS might see that as a blessing though. Other available defensemen would include Brent Sopel, Aaron Miller, Visnovsky (but I hear Lombardi doesn't plan on trading him), and while we're talking about non-rental defensemen, why not include the useless Tverdovsky in the thread. there are tons of defensemen available in LA but I find it unlikely that even a former scout would let all of it go for prospects/picks because you need somebody to play there next year even if the team is rebuilding. The players I mentioned will surely be drawing some attention around the league none the less, particularily in 4-1st-rounders-in-the-next-2-years-and-lacking-defensemen-Edmonton.

the Kings have reportedly been shopping Avery around. Can't see too many teams being interested in him though as he's already made too many enemies. Ottawa and Boston are aparently interested though (I think they're just doing it to piss Habs fans off). Other forwards who could be traded out of LA would include Armstrong, Kostopolous, and maaaayyyybe McCauley, Thornton or Camalleri. I say maybe because I doubt many teams'll be interested in depth forwards like McCauley (3 year contract) or Thornton and Camalleri because he's young (I only brought him up because there've been lots of trade rumours involving him already). I'd say Armstrong and Kostopolous are safe bets though as both have sub $1mil salaries and could contribute in the right environments.

Considering what Avery fetched in return. It appears that they just wanted to get rid of him. Jason Ward is a mediocre checking 3rd liner at best. Pretty much worthless in my estimation. Just a warm body, very replacable.

As for the prospects, although Cliche made a little buzz for himself at the WJ for his penalty killing efforts... he is not close to a blue chip prospect.

None of the prospects involved in the deal were high up any depth charts. It was basically Ward for Avery, which again, to me is like sending Avery away as opposed to making a trade.

I hope he's learned enough lessons about running his mouth.

That's like asking Jeremy Roenick or Brett Hull to keep their mouths shut.
